Pokémon Trainer joins the Super Smash Bros. Brawl

The regular Super Smash Bros. Brawl updates just keep getting better as a Pokémon Trainer has been revealed as a playable character. While we're slightly bummed about not coming to blows with Ash Ketchum, the Pokémon Trainer in Brawl doesn't do his fighting directly. Instead, he warms up the bench and issues commands to his three Pokémon: Squirtle, Ivysaur and Charizard.
This isn't like say, Marvel vs Capcom or Street Fighter EX 3 where you could control all of your characters at the same time. The trio is cycled in and out with a special command and in classic Pokémon fashion. All of the Pokémon share the same damage meter, but they all have their own individual stamina which will prevent players from sticking to just one.
Check out the update yourself for all the awesome, albeit, painfully embedded screenshots.

looks like there having more characters that change this time around, with this, and Samus.
lvl99ultrathug @ Aug 13th 2007 3:53AM
"Are you ready to battle, Ass?!"
Raikage @ Aug 13th 2007 1:18PM
Ahhh... Robot Chicken...
Anyway, this is pretty cool. Not sure how it will work but it should be interesting.
Mitsuo @ Aug 13th 2007 3:54AM
ok, why is squirtle the only one that's not in the final evolution. We got Charizard, Ivysaur and then there's Squirtle. I want Blastoise! >=O
Bigfoot @ Aug 13th 2007 4:03AM
@Mitsuo, because each Pokemon is probably going to have difference in speed and strength.
ssuk @ Aug 13th 2007 5:03AM
Uhm... Ivysaur wasn't Bulbasaurs final evolution... So it goes Squirtle (1st gen), Ivysaur (2nd gen), Charizard (3rd gen).
Mitsuo @ Aug 13th 2007 1:42PM
well....I still want blastoise! >=O
Andre Segers @ Aug 13th 2007 3:58AM
^ Ivysaur is not Bulbasaur's final evolution; Venasaur is.
Thus, we have one unevolved Pokemon (Squirtle), one first-level evolved pokemon (Ivysaur), and one final evolved Pokemon (Charizard).
How they're going to balance these differences, I have no idea.
rTwelve @ Aug 13th 2007 4:12AM
the 'zard is lv36, the ivysaur is lv50, the squirtle lv64
i win
RoboChamp @ Aug 13th 2007 10:11AM
LOL, nerds.
JK, I still have the pokerap memorized by heart >.>...
TWiNKiE @ Aug 13th 2007 5:27PM
I'm ashamed to say that I know it too....
At least they have Charizard. The most hardcore Pokémon IMO.
Brad Lee @ Aug 13th 2007 8:25PM
Until a rock bonks him on his skull...
Anyway, sweetness that more pokemon are joining the fray. I was hoping for some fighting pokemon. But ehh, this is cool too.
Shiro @ Aug 14th 2007 6:12AM
They WON'T balance them. That's the point.
Stand-still attacks will be squirtle, joystick-held attacks will be Ivysaur, and Smash Attacks will be Charizard.
Well, that seems to be the obvious solution to me, at least.
Shiro @ Aug 14th 2007 6:20AM
D'oh! Never mind the last thing I said, I don't believe that'd work out. I totally didn't realize how the Poke Trainer actually fought. Sorry for being dumb! ;P
Morisato @ Aug 13th 2007 4:06AM
Someone watches a little too much Pokemon! haha j/k I knew that too. I hope this character controls differently, like you actually give commands rather than controls. Make the controlability a bit looser to balance the greater versatility of having 3 unique characters.
rTwelve @ Aug 13th 2007 4:13AM
I swear, that looks better than PBR!
BPM @ Aug 13th 2007 5:41AM
Another Mario Edit enters the fray!

I'd like to ask Mario edits to clean out the artifacts. The little pixels of weird color that surrounds Mario in the white background.
REUYL @ Aug 13th 2007 11:14AM
Nothing can beat my Chadwardenn Mario... NOTHING!!
samfish @ Aug 13th 2007 11:28AM
If I put a Mario cap on Naked Peach, I could beat it.
Everybody loves Peach sans clothing. Haven't you ever been to 4Chan?
Anonymous @ Aug 13th 2007 12:38PM
Rules 1 and 2 fuckwit.
rTwelve @ Aug 13th 2007 1:15PM
I forced the compression like that on purpose. What, you never saw the terrible resize jobs in those animutations?
Kaemon @ Aug 13th 2007 1:30PM
Anonymous, you make it sound like people care about rules.
michas_pi @ Aug 16th 2007 6:41PM
They don't have to care, but they must obey them.
Rules one and two...
Ian @ Aug 13th 2007 4:27AM
Im guessing they will balance them out by weight class, charzard is a heavy, ivysaur is a medium, and squirtle is a light. They had those three weight classes in the old super smash bros and im guessing that they will have them in the new one.
BTW, what is going on with the marios, they are no longer all the same?
Anni @ Aug 13th 2007 4:27AM
I'm a huge fan of this. Modeled after Red? If I had to guess.
chris @ Aug 13th 2007 4:31AM
He is modeled after Red, but unfortunately has to get a totally generic name. I understand that most people playing the game will have no idea who "Red" is, but that hasn't stopped them having obscure Japanese things in SSBM.
flameofdoom666 @ Aug 13th 2007 4:37AM
So cool. Instead of a billion playable Pokemon.... 1 character has 3! great idea. Yet Pikachu is still playable.. woohoo :-)
Purple Haze @ Aug 13th 2007 4:50AM
I'm just happy they picked the right forms. Charizard pwns, Ivysaur is the best evolution of Bulbasaur and Squirtle is just awesome.
Cal @ Aug 13th 2007 4:53AM
It's just modeled after the Fire Red/Leaf Green protagonist. Which is Red, I guess.
RRT @ Aug 13th 2007 5:04AM
Squirtle
B: Tackle
B-Side: Bubblebeam
B-Up: Hydro Pump (in the anime, Squirtle withdrew into his shell and shot water from the orifices in each corner, an action which had the effect of propelling him)
Ivysaur
B: Bite/Crunch
B-Side: Razor Leaf
B-Up: Stomp
Grab: Vine Whip
Charizard
B: Flamethrower
B-Side: Fire Blast
B-Up: Seismic Toss
hvnlysoldr @ Aug 13th 2007 9:57AM
Oh come on! Squirtle could have rollout or even more impressively one of the first Pokemon to have Skull Bash!
hvnlysoldr @ Aug 13th 2007 10:08AM
Correction. Squirtle was one of the first Pokemon to have withdraw and Skull Bash.
Kabobrocks @ Aug 13th 2007 5:10AM
Hmm...this certainly was an unexpected addition to the brawl team...
hvnlysoldr @ Aug 13th 2007 10:00AM
Cleaned up artifacts.

Kye @ Aug 13th 2007 5:17AM
Sonic had better be there.
Someone from Capcom as well, Ryu or Guile...
Thief @ Aug 13th 2007 5:23AM
I hope that Squirtles taunt pulls out the slick shades!
s256 @ Aug 13th 2007 5:19PM
YES, that would be awesome!
BPM @ Aug 13th 2007 5:47AM
I like to call this trainer "Not-Ash," as that's basically what he is, not Ash. While one of the protagonists from the Kanto adventure remake, he isn't the same as the original Kanto protagonist.
I'd like to see it if instead of changing his clothing's colors, his alts are the different trainers, both playable and rivals (Ash/Satoshi/Red and Gary/Shigeru/Blue/Green from RGBY; Hiro/Gold, Kamon/Silver, and Kris/Crystal from GSC, etc.). That'd be really awesome.
chris @ Aug 13th 2007 6:53AM
This "Pokemon Trainer" looks identical to Red. He isn't Ash because Ash was just the anime version of the original character called Red who existed before the anime series ever did.
Martin @ Aug 13th 2007 7:32AM
I don't understand a thing you just said. But, you said it with authority, so I agree.
Anni @ Aug 13th 2007 12:22PM
I agree that alt-costumes of other trainers would be cool, though most of the trainers in the games are just like, "I like bugs they buzz around! BUHNUHNUHNUHNUHNUHnuhnuhnuhnuhnuhnuuuuuuuuuh..."
But a female trainer modeled after the Diamond/Pearl protagonist would be nice.
rowd149 @ Aug 13th 2007 12:34PM
Actually, Red was also the name of the main character of the Pokemon Adventures manga, and he looks nothing like this character. In any case, this trainer bears a stronger resemblence FR/LG Red than the original RBG Red.
rTwelve @ Aug 13th 2007 1:18PM
[presses taunt button] I like pants, they're comfy and easy to wear!
D. Axel @ Aug 13th 2007 6:38AM
I don't understand why they couldn't just use pokeballs like the previous smash bros games in the series. Was it that necessary to include a completely new addition to the player list instead?
SKI @ Aug 13th 2007 9:31AM
They both will be in the game, pokeballs and the pokemon trainer, living together.
Koopaknight29 @ Aug 13th 2007 7:25AM

(Most people will not get this reference above.)
Sweet RED's in. Never saw this one coming. Wonder what's his final smash though?
chris @ Aug 13th 2007 7:29AM
The final smash is Metapod.
matt @ Aug 13th 2007 7:51AM
The Final Smash is Magikarp, doing his splash attack.
WiggyDee @ Aug 13th 2007 8:04AM
I just made this joystiq account so i could say this.
"Magikarp this bitch me trippin' up on yo grill! Do a splash attack!"
I swear i wont ever bring any more meme's to joystiq comment sections...
