stellarpimp,

It just isn't economically viable for most 3rd party devs to build a game that looks as good as Killzone2. Your time and resource set is basically fixed, and you make the best game you can from there. K2 is a first party system seller. It can have a much larger budget and draw from more experienced Cell programmers.

On the 360, we are seeing Gears, Bioshock, Mass Effect, and others built by 3rd party devs that look amazing. The 360 is just an easier system to pull those games off with. Lair, I believe, is the only 3rd party PS3 game that gets zomg graphics comments. Resistance looked nice as well.

Put it this way, given an equal realistic fixed amount of time and resources, you could make a better looking and playing game with the 360. Metacritic.com has the evidence for this. But, given unlimited time and resources you could make a better looking and playing game with the PS3. Reality vs. Potential.

The Cell and its programming difficulty suck up too many resources. If the system has a great, yet more traditional processor, the PS3 would be pumping out more fantastic looking games.

Hell, they can't even get Madden to run right for fuck's sake.

@Jake

Madden's a poor example considering it ran at 30 FPS in its first iteration on the 360. Amazing how so many people seem to forget that. Not that changes the fact that this year's version is superior to the PS3 version, but I'd bet money that next year's version will be 60 FPS on the PS3.

Mikeo - the resource numbers you speak of are on computer? Indeed they would need all the additional system resources, as it runs a "million" tasks in the background. Windows is...blah windows, we know how that goes. LoL

Jake - I agree with you on your comment. It does require alot of time and effort to learn something new. Another problem MS is having with Vista. But this has nothing to do with OS'. PS2 had an off the wall CPU as well. Once the learning curve was crossed it was pretty much equal to the other systems. From looking at what the first party makers are doing with the PS3 will up the ante for the 3rd party developers.

Basically, all this can't be done on the PS3 rumors popping up everywhere is getting a tad old. I do wonder if this Cell does produce, in the PS4 would we see a Cell with PPUx2 and SPUx16? In those slides I linked to, no where does it state any usuage for the RSX... With so much being handled via Cell...it has alot of headroom. Its just the learning curve thats a pain.

Know that old saying...can't teach an old dog new tricks. I'd like to see some new/younger dev teams get in there and think how to do things untraditionally.

Vidikron - true statement. But does that help buyers decisions today? Sad to say but not really. The thing that bothers me is...that first Madden on 360, the Devs didn't come out and say hey...360 isn't capable of handling 60fps. Instead they just improved it over the years. The learning curve has been learned. So congratz to the EA team for upping their game on the 360. Just don't bash another system because you haven't figured out the tech yet.

Telling people that it's ok to chose not to buy the PS3 version is alarming. It makes me wonder if the statement is coming from Peter Moore himself.

Notice how EA sports isn't even bothering trying to rectify that offensive comment/statement? The Peter Moore Propaganda machine has begun, they purposley put it out there that the PS3 version isn't up to snuff compared to the other version. But they wouldn't dare say how good graphically it is compared to the Wii even though it runs at 60 frames on that console too.

Instead EA sports communicates to the public TO NOT BUY THE PS3 VERSION! Why wouldn't they say that it's better than theWii version and can consider that when buying?

That statement was meant to discredit Sony in every way possible.

They can keep their crap title Need for Speed also!

I usually buy a new Madden every two years, but sometimes it is hard to hold off. For me, it's a combination of new options/features and new rosters, which by themselves would be worth maybe $20. Unfortunately, the fact that Madden comes out at a time that I'm so geared up for the new season that I'm susceptible to it's advances means that $30-$40 more can fall out of my pocket easily. If I wasn't a big fan of the sport I wouldn't even look at Madden as a must-have every year.

For players who are big into online play, I'm sure the increased traffic to the new version is a big factor, especially since EA shuts off the servers after a few years.

I find it amusing that EA is saying basically yup we tried, and we couldn't make it better. No mention of a possible patch, and, no mention of a refund being given to those who bought the game and are not happy with it (alot of stores only let you trade it off for the same game). Funny how that is, so if you are a loyal EA fan with a PS3 and went and bought it the same day it came out without reading up on it, your pretty much screwed.

EA really should stand behind the product and if you are not happy with it, allow it to be returned for something else.

Yes, I own a PS3, but thanks for claiming I don't have anything except for a PS2. Rockstar said it would be the "complete" version because they have some downloadable crap that you have to buy on the marketplace. That doesn't mean it'll look better or play better. And all the footage for the other games is on the 360 because Microsoft most likely pays them to do that.

You can tell from the comments that PS3 fans are very sensitive to issues like this. The RRoD, DVD9, Dreamcast, and other overused and overexaggerated 360 issues are being used like crazy to combat PS3 programming issues, as if the 360 is somehow responsible for the PS3's shortcomings, or as if this type of story isn't common already. We've know the PS3 was a bitch to program for over a year.

One other issue I have is that PS3 fanboys always exclaim that 360 owners are all kiddies, and in this article all jocks. Closely read any Joystiq thread about the 360 or PS3. Though each fanbase is immature, the playstation base is obviously the worst. See for yourself.

I just think many of you are living lies. You shouldn't have to defend your toys so rigorously. For the record, I'll be getting a PS3 next year for $400 when it has some seriously good games (GT5, MGS4, FFXIII) while you dorks scream about how great Lair, Heavenly, Warhawk, etc. are.

Jake, come on. How hypocritical can you get? First saying that PS3 fanboys are always calling 360 fans "kids" and then you turn around and basically claim the same about the PS3 fanbase.

And what do you mean, "closely read" any Joystiq thread? Where the hell have you been the past year? It's the PS3 that constantly gets the most bashing from the fanboys of the other systems. God damn, man, open your eyes.

And I love how you yet again take to bashing the PS3 holiday line-up. Calling the people "dorks" who are actually excited about games like Warhawk, HS, etc... You sink further into fanboydom every week.

Forget about Holida lineups.

The sony defense force is probably the nastiest piece of work I've ever seen. Just in general you all come off...

God I don't even have the time or energy for this crap.

Suffice to say I agree with Jake and if you're honest with yourself you'd look around see the comments that ps3 owners make on a constant basis and then tell me that they're better than 360 fanboys.

@ForceUnleashed

You're blind. Seriously. The amount of crap that has been thrown at the PS3 by fanboys is ridiculous and constant. To actually try and claim that the PS3 fanbase is somehow worse than the others at this point is beyond ludicrous.

Look at Jake's own comments. He provides the perfect example. First off, he makes some claim that the PS3 fanbase is always calling the 360 fanbase "kiddies". I've seen that a few times, but not that much. Usually it's someone commenting on the loud mouthed punks on Live. Anyway, he then turns around and essentially calls the PS3 fanbase kiddie. Wow. Pot, meet kettle.

He then moves on to an attempt to validate his statements by claiming he's not 100% against the PS3 because he plans on buying one after the price drops and the "seriously good" games are launched. So he feels the need to validate his statements, fine. I don't care about that. But does he leave it at that? Nope. He proceeds to call the PS3 fanbase "dorks" and take a subtle shot at the PS3 fall line-up. Again, wow. After calling the PS3 fanbase immature, he turns around and calls them dorks for being excited about some upcoming games. Pot, let me introduce you to kettle... again.

And, BTW, I'm not claiming the PS3 fanbase is better, I just don't see how they are "obviously" worse.

Well, you must understand the people are huge football fans. They spend more each year on football apparel, tickets, cable sports packages, etc. than on Madden. $60 seems like a small price to pay for an updated version of a game they play hundreds of hours with friends each year.

Yes it is rape. They spend more money on exclusivity than on development. They charge you $60 for a roster update, as the game updates typically are weaksauce. But at the same time, millions of Madden fans get more hours out of their game than you will get out of most of the games you buy.

This is EA. It takes them 3 versions to get the game back up to speed of the previous gen. Combine that with the low PS3 install base so far and you know they aren't trying to hard to get Madden running great on the PS3.

Personally I do not think this is a graphics issue but instead an AI issue. With Madden you have 22 individual AIs running around. Each one has a dynamic AI set that braches depending on the how a particular play is called. One of the weak points of the Cell is AI branch perditions and you can believe that a lot of the routines that go on in a Madden game are just that. This may be a case where memory and general CPU needs where the PS3 lack could be hurting Madden on the PS3. Just because the PS3 Madden doesn’t run at 60fps does not necessarily mean it’s the graphics pipeline that is the bottleneck.

Thi8s is just EA being lazy and not wanting to put in the extra work to make the ps3 version equal/or better than the 360's.

I hope he doesn't say the same shit next year because there will be no excuse

Seriously the ps3 is a difficulte pos to develop for. Its not EA's fault that they didn't feel it was worth the time or trouble.

@ForceUnleashed

I'm not going to deny that the PS3 is harder to develop for, but I think these claims of EA being lazy have some merit. For example, how do you explain the fact that last year's 360 version of Madden ran at 30 FPS and had half the features of the same game on the older systems (Xbox, PS2)? As I told Jake above, that really doesn't change the fact that this years version is better on the PS3, but it does throw doubt on all these claims that it's purely the fault of the PS3 hardware. If the 360 is so easy to develop for, why was Madden only 30 FPS last year? Perhaps because EA really is lazy and/or their yearly release schedules are too short to fully utilize the systems in their first go around? Think about it.

Vidikron hit on something in his comment. I think it has to do with the release schedule. Madden comes out every August. It seems to take more time to optimize code on the PS3 than on the 360. Multiplatform games seem to get frequently delayed on the PS3. Madden is a seasonal title, delaying the game for say 6 months to get game optimized for 60fps wouldn't have been feasible. EA probably just chose to run the game at 30fps because it was the only way the game would make a simultaneous release.

Some people were offended that it wasn't really directed at.

How many times does this need to be said before it sinks in? The PS3 version of All Pro Football 2k8, which was developed by a company that has no ties to EA whatsoever, SUFFERS FROM THE EXACT SAME FRAMERATE ISSUES VIS A VIS IT'S 360 COUSIN AS DOES MADDEN. Let me say that again: APF2k8 (360) 60fps, (PS3) 30fps. Anyone who says that the problem lies with the developers should be pitied, as one would pity a mildly retarded child.
