Gearbox's Borderlands revealed on Game Informer cover
With a tag line like "Diablo meets Mad Max," how can you not take the bait? Gearbox Software's Borderlands is the cover story in the September issue of Game Informer. Described as an RPG-shooter, with 4-player online co-op support, Borderlands appears to mimic the space gansta aesthetic that was so brilliantly captured in the dusty Gibson films of yesteryear -- not unlike id's new project Rage. How Diablo elements play into the dune buggy battlin' should be explained once the full cover story has been perused.
Developer Gearbox has earned critical props for its Brothers in Arms games, which are often overlooked in the rotting heap of World War II shooters. The latest in that series, Hell's Highway (due in November), showed great promise during an E3 demo, but once again, was lost in the swirl of game previews, and has an uphill battle at retail, facing a very competitive holiday lineup. But if Gearbox stays dedicated to top-tier technical and production qualities, as seen in Brothers in Arms, than Borderlands could be the commercial success this studio is capable of developing. This is one to watch.

Hmm...Borderlands looks interesting, but I'm more interested in the Killzone 2 hands-on. I just hope it shows a new level, or at-least an updated build of the E3 demo.

God, enough with the first person shooters, already! I read "Diablo meets mad max" and thought, Cool. Then "FPS". How the hell can it be diablo meets anything if its a FPS.

That was exactly what I was thinking,Diablo meets Mad MAX in a FPS?,They better explain that or else...I will send them a Hateful email,oh yeah they don't want to mess with Diablo fans.
If anything the cover looks like "Killzone meets Pursuit Force".

The thing is, at least to me, the point-and-click, angled top-down interface is dead. You can't expect a company to put out a new game these days with that interface.
Even nostalgia is dying when it comes to those kind of games - I tried playing Fallout 2 recently, a game which was genuinely awesome in its day, and I almost killed myself because of how awful that interface is when compared to what's out there now.
Just because it's first person, doesn't mean it won't be good. There are good first person RPGs out there. I think the comparison they're trying to make is in the cooperative multiplayer aspect of the game to that of Diablo II.

Are they just teasing me with the Diablo comparison? Because if they're just teasing me I don't know if I can take it. I'm already depressed enough that there's still been no Diablo 3 mentioned by Blizzard :(.

FPS can be a mess. Everyone likes the "movie-like" camera shots and vibe but it works in movies since it is SCRIPTED. If people in movies had to look and check every nook in first person, then it would be a mess.
Diablo gave everyone a broader perspective so you can plan things in harmony with everything so the end result was a "movie-like" experience
FPS's have to dumb things down so they are playable

Funny thing, Game Informer has become my mag of choice. They actually have decent articles and coverage, whereas EGM has just gone to shit. And yes, this game looks sweet.

Why haven't we had any good mad max games? (well, since like 1860 or something).
The mad max setting would be great for all kinds of games.. but the only ones that have come close are fallout, and (in a weird way) interstate 76)

I suppose none of you botherd to read the article.. It goes on to explain that you add attributes and other things to the character their are over 500,000 diff weapons in the hole game no load screens and merchant style buying.. its online multiplayer and you even level up if thats not diablo meets mad max i dont know what is.. first person shooter with character upgrades and no path in the game that is similar to another thats just good thoughts
