Well, according to Bungie, Halo 3 has over 39,000 lines of NPC dialog. That's pretty impressive, considering many magazines praised Halo 3's top-notch audio.

Maybe I shouldn't worry about dvd limits anymore :D

So that you had the choice to watch your movies in HD. But Sony is forcing something on gamers that, as of now, really isn't needed.

Backwards Compatibility. Xbox Live Arcade. HD Digital Movie rentals.

Or are you talking about the HD-DVD add on (damn to many devices shortened to "HD")?

To watch HD-DVDs. Duh.

No matter how you spin it 10GB of audio is just ridiculous. I'm a semi-audiophile and I see this as pointless. I have no complaints about the audio I've been getting from my 360. 5.1 Dolby Digital is more than enough and very satisfying.

What they are doing is such a waste of space. It's like trying to run a car on kerosine instead of gasoline.

All these arguements are made out of pure jealousy and denial..

when i go out and buy a new cd from my fav artists, (the ones i don't like i usually download) i know for a fact that i will be hearing a better quality sound.. i make a copy of my new cd and keep the copy and my car in case it gets scratched, whether the difference is huge or small it's better for sound not to be compressed

why would the developers compress the sound and make it sound not as good if they had the space.. or should they have not compressed it just so xbox fans can be happy??

i want good sound and if they have the space, i'm glad they used it, why the hell does everyone come here being idiots like it's such a bad thing?

if you're happy with your sound and games fitting in 8.5 gb then good for you, but i'm happy i'll be getting some very crisp sound,

what difference does it make to come here and say that it's pointless when is not, if xbox fan would've been the ones with the bluray they would be bragging about this and saying that the sound is gonna be great and poor ps3 morons blah blah blah,

let it go already guys.. bluray it's good, this ain't no conspiracy to make you guys mad,

and yes the bluray it's more resistant than reg dvd's, remember sony was being sued for this not too long ago, if you seen in wikipedia under hard coating technology there's some info about it

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bluray

and some guy also did some test on youtube, but i figure people would like to read it better , here's the link anyways

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o5jEbZt6AIQ

either way stop hating on bluray and ps3, it's not gonna change anything, ps3 owners are happy and tired of giving out facts, and other fans get more and more facts each week.

then explain to me why PS2 consistently outsells PS3 and 360 in every territory? its in its 7th year, and people are still buying more PS2 hardware than PS3 or 360.

and have you forgotten about Wii? it has last gen graphics and performance, yet it sells like crazy all over the world, at an overpriced $250.

The best audio I heard in a game lately was Bioshock XBL demo... and that game fits on a DVD.

So basically, I'm asking myself: Is it just poor compression that Heavenly Sword's audio requires that much space?

The PS3 has bluray to help Sony win the format war. Plain and simple. Bluray drives are $200 to $300, just for the drive.

2Gb of RAM retails at or around $100
120Gb instead of 60Gb is $50 more
$50 of extra cost on the GPU would go a long way
$50-100 extra to get a proven high end CPU instead of the Cell would go a long way.

So, you can have the PS3, which is essentially a 360 with bluray as far as what goes onto the screen gamewise.

Or, you can have a system with tons of HDD just in case a game ships on two discs ala PC. This system would run Crysis at 1080p no problem. Its graphics would absolutely crush the 360. It would have 2.5 Gb of RAM for fuck's sake.

They both cost the same to make.

It would be a fucking beast. But instead, you get to play HD movies and brag about minor game advantages. Sad to say, but it is the honest truth. Nobody doubts that bluray has value, it is just at such a ridiculously high cost. That is why MS didn't include it. They had nothing to gain from it. If they were going to dump an extra $200 in, they'd have spent it on RAM n' shit.

That's just my opinion, though. And if watching HD movies is a really big deal to you, then the PS3 having bluray is awesome.

PS3 costing more than 360 is an *illusion* created by clever 360 pricing. im not saying it isnt, but im not saying it is either: it all depends on the individual needs of the consumer.

if wifi is a requirement for gamers due to location, than PS3 and 360 Pro are the same price.

if online gaming on 360 is a requirement for gamers, than 360 plus 2 years of Xbox Live = cost of PS3.

these are just two examples, there are many more, but hopefully you get the idea.

I don't mean to go on a rant here but the keywords are "in eleven languages". This is the same thing Insomniac did with Resistance . They had plenty of extra room so they included all the different language tracks so they only had to manufacture 1 run of disks at launch that they could ship across the world.

Of course it would take more space if you included over 45,000 lines of dialog instead of the 4,500 lines you would have if you just included the English language track.

I hate it when they brag about including the other 10 language tracks to reach 10 GB of sound data. This way they can say "only possible on PS3". If Ninja Theory really thought that it was "only possible on PS3" they wouldn't have tried to get Microsoft to publish the game before they ever went to Sony. I'm glad Sony picked it up because the game does look amazing and the demo was very fun. However I can see why Microsoft would be less than fully confident with Ninja Theory after Kung Fu Chaos bombed on the Xbox.

Oblivion had 50 hours of dialog, plenty of music(If you don't believe me look it up.) and it took up less than 5 GB. Heavenly Sword is not even close to being a 50 hour game. Is it really news if a company doesn't know the meaning of compression? I would say the bigger news is that with this game they had so much extra room that to fill the Blue Ray they had to include 11 different versions of their audio.

I am looking forward to Heavenly Sword and hopefully it is a great time occupier while I wait for God Of War 3.

I'm just tired of all these quotes that are pure propaganda aimed right at competitors. We all know the PS3 is too expensive, The 360 breaks at the drop of a hat, and the Wii has almost no good games. Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo attack each other all the time and it angers me to no end. I have and love all 3 systems. When did we stop being gamers and become fanboys?

/end rant

Or can't afford it, but I digress...

You're not saying that people bash a system BECAUSE they don't own it, are you? Because I would have to say "They bash it AND don't own it BECAUSE they find faults with it".

I guess if you don't bother compressing anything you could use that much space. I recall the guys from Bethesda saying that Oblivion hade tens of gigabytes of audio in raw form but it all fit on the disc on the 360 -- sort of the same way all those hours of music fit on my 4GB iPod.

Not saying more space wouldn't be nice onthe 360, but the DVD9s are not he system crippler that Sony and its legions would like them to be.

I feel that I can comment on this from an unbiased opinion since I own a ps3 and a 360. I do prefer the 360 for games since they run better and there is a bigger selection. I use my ps3 for high def movies. I presently have over 3000 songs downloaded on my computer through itunes and that takes up about 13 gb of memory. So I'm kinda curious as to why 3 and 1/2 hrs of music takes up 10 gb.

bl13,

because i'm a big fan of some of Sony's developers.

what i'm NOT is a fan of Sony's corporate executives who have done everything they can to get in their developers way it seems..

even so, how much do you think i could sell a PS3 for? especially now that it's $100 cheaper at retail? i'd just have to buy it again when those games i bought the PS3 for actually DO come out. eventually...

i certainly didn't buy it to hear Heavenly Sword in 11 uncompressed languages in 7.1 tho.

i think the question has boiled down to:
do you want more storage for things like 10 other languages and FMV, or more games and more money in your pocket.

i think.

Yeah... I was just joking...

Arguing the value of less storage is dense, and quite laughable.

And if $50-$100 makes things WAY to expensive, then people should not be spending money on gaming in general. I don't get this argument, when the same people complaining have more than 1 of the defective consoles.

Floppies FTW!!

For all of you commenting that they should learn to use compression consider this. Why the hell would you compress something if you didn't need to and secondly, the tracks are probably independent multi-channel tracks which would be the ARE using compression.

1.5 hours * 11 languages = 16.5 hours of six channel audio.

Uncompressed audio is about 450MB per hour.
450MB * 16.5 hours * 6 channels = 44 GB.

I'm sorry Megastryke but everyone that follows the Final Fantasy series knows FFVII was the best storyline in the series period, even Square knows this. It has also been stated from Square itself it will be the last one to receive a remake. I'm not sure if you saw the article about Square's convention this year where they asked gamers to vote on the next remake. Overwhelmingly the gamers picked FFVII. But Square said they had too much of their resources spread amongst all the games they had in development this year. They said they will devote massive amounts of time and resources into make the remake of FFVII the best remake they possible can. They also know and said that if they fail to make a true effort on the remake their loyal fans would have their heads.

That's just inefficient, it can't have 15 CD's worth of music in it so what are they wasting all the space on? GTA had loads of Music and that never ran to 10GB not compressing sound like that just to show off is pointless.

It could have 15 CDs worth of audio and apparently it does.

11 languages on one Blu-ray means they will ship one disc for all zones. Typically companies will ship different versions of games for different zones.

e.g. A Japanese vs. English version. This is a smart move on Sony's part to reduce manufacturing costs. That's what they should be bragging about.

Needless to say, that's still a ton of audio per language.

I like how theyre like "omg 4,500 lines of dialog!" When Halo 3 has currently 40,000 lines of combat dialog. Not including cutscenes and non combat dialog.

Halo has always had impressive audio. I believe though that this is not 40,000 static lines of dialog but rather 40,000 potential combinations. They are referring to each "grunt" and sound as a line of dialog in the combat system. Overall I think there is 50,000 total "pieces" or combinations of dialog that can be heard in Halo 3.

I'm not totally sure how they make it work but it is very impressive. It's apples and oranges of course though. Halo is a creative and software accomplishment, Heavenly Sword is simply and impressive quantity of information.
