Microsoft opening up to user content
Though traditionally a controlling mother when it comes to its infant Xbox Live online service, Microsoft hinted today at easing up its sweaty-palmed handholding. Speaking at Gamefest 2007 (via 1UP), the company discussed the Xbox Live Server Platform (XLSP) that companies can use to deliver content, provided they take full responsibility for monitoring the content.
When suggested that one might use this to create a PC level editor that would make games for an Xbox 360 title, Microsoft Software Design Engineer Zsolt Mathe said, "Even though nobody has done that, I would highly recommend that."
Epic Games Vice President Mark Rein had previously stated that Xbox Live's resistance to user-created maps and mods was responsible in part to the delay of the Unreal Tournament 3 for Xbox 360. Looks like XLSP will be the system that expedites the version release.
The catch is that Microsoft must approve the game maker to use XLSP. We imagine it's kind of like the film Chasing Liberty, where the President of the US gives his over-protected daughter extra freedom to travel Europe with an undercover secret service agent constantly keeping watch. In this adaptation, Microsoft is played by the reliable Stark Sands, Mark Rein is captured brilliantly by the venerable and lovable Mandy Moore and XLSP is portrayed by the hunky Matthew Goode ... what? It was a good film, don't look at us like that!

My personal opinion is GOOD for MS and GREAT for 360 owners...
Oh GOD its too late for a flame war to start...
*Sits back and watches the flames start*
NotASenator @ Aug 15th 2007 10:45PM
Didn't they announce this last year?

sheppy @ Aug 15th 2007 10:49PM
Yes, yes they did. As well as the supposed open platform of the XNA creator's club that still remains largely a "nifty feature" under utilized.
Would it be great to see mods on 360 as well? Hell yeah. But I doubt we'll see it.
Patrick @ Aug 15th 2007 11:14PM
well epic is makin this game and they really support this and microsoft also likes to match ps3 AT LEAST feature for feature, so i imagine at least well see it there

I'm sorry, but I'm not going to pay £60 a month to get MY OWN HOME MADE CODE running on the Xbox 360, especially when I have to use C#, probably the most useless and overly-obsessive syntax-hugging version of C ever created. If it was open to other programming languages like C or C++ (C++ being the game industry's programming language standard) I may be more interested in spending money on it. But as it stands, it's an over-priced, under-valued service which doesn't merrit my time or effort, let alone my money. =/

Not owning an XBOX I don't really care, but I remember playing UT in college and really can;t imagine it w/out the user created maps, mods, and skins. It still surprises me that this is a lacking or forced pay option on consoles...But hey, I'm playing with my wii what all of you guys are getting head shots, so who's the bigger sucker?
sheppy @ Aug 15th 2007 11:04PM
Like a bag full of Jaw Breakers.... this seems to be missing a point.
So... ummm, Nintendo promotes user created content when?
phattie @ Aug 15th 2007 10:51PM
So, now they are charging you an annual fee for XBL and starting to offload all the server side responsibilities and financial burden to the publishers (while taking a cut on the licensing)?
Zeus the God @ Aug 15th 2007 11:14PM
No, you stupid Sony fanboy, they are allowing game companies to accept user created content and upload it to Xbox LIVE. This is also if the game company checks out and can be responsible enough to thoroughly check the content to make sure its safe and of quality.
They aren't offloading responsibilities onto anyone. They are allowing them to put their stuff up on their own accord, as long as they... I already said this.
Stupid PS3 fanboys...
phattie @ Aug 15th 2007 11:22PM
You proved my point in your first paragraph... then took it back?
Snukadaman @ Aug 15th 2007 11:29PM
zeus remember you cant argue with the blind because they will never see your point
Zeus the God @ Aug 15th 2007 11:38PM
I guess you're right, Snuk. I guess fat ass here will just continue to troll everything that has to do with Microsoft.
And people say Xbox fanboys are bad... Ha!

D. Axel @ Aug 15th 2007 11:06PM
YES, this means I can create stuff on PC for ut3 and it could be played on the 360?
Ska Oreo @ Aug 15th 2007 11:08PM
looks like the 360 will be getting those UT mods after all.
felixlighter @ Aug 15th 2007 11:09PM
And this is why competition is great!
Zeus the God @ Aug 15th 2007 11:18PM
AMEN!
The one thing the PS3 is good for, in my opinion, pressuring MS into doing things for the community.
Jake @ Aug 16th 2007 12:27AM
Competition indeed. There are many PS3 features that owners of that console owe to the 360. Likewise, as the PS3 matures and adds stuff MS has to follow suit.
Thanks Sony. If you keep it up, someday I'll get Live for free as well.
robotrock @ Aug 15th 2007 11:11PM
how in the hell do you know what the movie Chasing Liberty is about?
Chyld989 @ Aug 15th 2007 11:37PM
Because Mandy Moore is hot, and thus they watched a movie with her in it? =P
Ska Oreo @ Aug 16th 2007 1:38AM
I second that. Mandy Moor is indeed hot and is possibly the only respectable pop icon in the business.
Snukadaman @ Aug 15th 2007 11:20PM
allright well there goes that argument for the blu-ray, maybe next time sonymatons
Patrick @ Aug 16th 2007 12:00AM
ps3 said we will have user created content, 360 said this in return "http://www.goldcoastwebdesigns.com/change-hyperlink-color.shtml">

mike_p @ Aug 16th 2007 12:52AM
This is great news to all Xbox Live subscribers! Now let's see just how far we can push custom content onto the platform (total conversions or just maps?).
It's plausible we could see the PC sharing the same user-created content that's on Xbox Live, provided the developer has "Games for Windows" certification obviously.
Truepatriot @ Aug 16th 2007 1:50AM
bout damn time. didnt MS start 360 by promoting user created content?
OmegaBlaster @ Aug 16th 2007 3:23AM
Didn't this already happen with Timesplitters Future Perfect, Pariah, and Far Cry Instincts?
And BOO to EA for shutting down Timesplitters.
Disclaim3r @ Aug 16th 2007 4:02AM
What ever happened to J Allard's big "Make your own T-Shirts! =D" deal way back when? It's like MS forgot the user part, which was their main focus before launch.
