Though traditionally a controlling mother when it comes to its infant Xbox Live online service, Microsoft hinted today at easing up its sweaty-palmed handholding. Speaking at Gamefest 2007 (via 1UP), the company discussed the Xbox Live Server Platform (XLSP) that companies can use to deliver content, provided they take full responsibility for monitoring the content.
When suggested that one might use this to create a PC level editor that would make games for an Xbox 360 title, Microsoft Software Design Engineer Zsolt Mathe said, "Even though nobody has done that, I would highly recommend that."
Epic Games Vice President Mark Rein had previously stated that Xbox Live's resistance to user-created maps and mods was responsible in part to the delay of the Unreal Tournament 3 for Xbox 360. Looks like XLSP will be the system that expedites the version release.
The catch is that Microsoft must approve the game maker to use XLSP. We imagine it's kind of like the film Chasing Liberty, where the President of the US gives his over-protected daughter extra freedom to travel Europe with an undercover secret service agent constantly keeping watch. In this adaptation, Microsoft is played by the reliable Stark Sands, Mark Rein is captured brilliantly by the venerable and lovable Mandy Moore and XLSP is portrayed by the hunky Matthew Goode ... what? It was a good film, don't look at us like that!

Yes, yes they did. As well as the supposed open platform of the XNA creator's club that still remains largely a "nifty feature" under utilized.
Would it be great to see mods on 360 as well? Hell yeah. But I doubt we'll see it.

I'm sorry, but I'm not going to pay £60 a month to get MY OWN HOME MADE CODE running on the Xbox 360, especially when I have to use C#, probably the most useless and overly-obsessive syntax-hugging version of C ever created. If it was open to other programming languages like C or C++ (C++ being the game industry's programming language standard) I may be more interested in spending money on it. But as it stands, it's an over-priced, under-valued service which doesn't merrit my time or effort, let alone my money. =/

Not owning an XBOX I don't really care, but I remember playing UT in college and really can;t imagine it w/out the user created maps, mods, and skins. It still surprises me that this is a lacking or forced pay option on consoles...But hey, I'm playing with my wii what all of you guys are getting head shots, so who's the bigger sucker?

So, now they are charging you an annual fee for XBL and starting to offload all the server side responsibilities and financial burden to the publishers (while taking a cut on the licensing)?

No, you stupid Sony fanboy, they are allowing game companies to accept user created content and upload it to Xbox LIVE. This is also if the game company checks out and can be responsible enough to thoroughly check the content to make sure its safe and of quality.
They aren't offloading responsibilities onto anyone. They are allowing them to put their stuff up on their own accord, as long as they... I already said this.
Stupid PS3 fanboys...

AMEN!
The one thing the PS3 is good for, in my opinion, pressuring MS into doing things for the community.

I second that. Mandy Moor is indeed hot and is possibly the only respectable pop icon in the business.

This is great news to all Xbox Live subscribers! Now let's see just how far we can push custom content onto the platform (total conversions or just maps?).
It's plausible we could see the PC sharing the same user-created content that's on Xbox Live, provided the developer has "Games for Windows" certification obviously.

Didn't this already happen with Timesplitters Future Perfect, Pariah, and Far Cry Instincts?
And BOO to EA for shutting down Timesplitters.

What ever happened to J Allard's big "Make your own T-Shirts! =D" deal way back when? It's like MS forgot the user part, which was their main focus before launch.
