Man just when I really thought BluRay was gonna be the clear winner, you guys got me thinking that HDDVD really does have a chance. Like someone else posted b4 me I also think if MS would have had the HDDVD drive inside the 360 then HDDVD would probably be winning or if not even in this race. These stats mean that alot of people are buy stand alone HDDVD drives. Unlike BluRay which is getting most thier sales from PS3 owners.

"HDTVs are selling well, but compared to mass consumption (i.e. above 50% of US households, if not higher) of HD, this won't happen for at least 5 more years."

HDTV penetration in US households is approaching 30% and will be there by the end of this year. Most experts predict that the penetration % of HDTV's will be 50% or better by the end of 2008.

Between 2006 and 2007, the cost for Plasma or LCD flat screens has gone down by an average of 30 to 40%. That means there are many HD options out there right now that have a sub $1000 price tag.

I laugh everytime I see someone post that they do not care about HD movies because their DVD's look fine. You know the old saying "you don't know what your missing if you've never seen it" don't you?

This is a perfect example of that. Until you see a Blu-ray movie or HD-DVD movie playing on a high quality flat panel HDTV in a home setting you have no idea what you are missing.

Ignorance is bliss right guys? No thanks, I prefer HD to Chump Vision.

In the year that I have had my HDTV no fewer than 4 of my friends have gone out and bought one 2. Usually the sticking point is the wives, but once the wives see my TV and here my wife raving about the TV, they change their minds and tell their husbands that they need one of these also.

I hear ya. My HDTV has sold a couple of friends HDTV's as well.

This format war is still keeping them from going one way or another though.

Kind of funny when you think about what needs to happen for HDDVD to come out on top.
Sony,MGM, Fox and Disney would have to produce in that format, as opposed to just Universal going neutral.

The hate for blu ray here due to peoples console fanboyism is pretty crazy. How can you argue against a format that has larger space ( = better encodes) and far greater studio support (more likely to have the movie you want) without sounding like an ass.

I'm sorry, I never said I didn't think HD didn't look any better. I'm not ignorant. Of course HD looks better, otherwise people wouldn't be paying for it. Oh and by mass consumption, the Consumer Electronics Assoc. says the number by the end of 2007 will be 36%. I highly doubt the percentage number will jump by 14% in the next year. Maybe in two years. And even with people jumping to HDTVs, whose to say they want to fork over $500 for a new format (after they've spent $1000-$2000) when the DVDs they have are just fine. I don't know anyone who wants to spend money building up their library so that it looks good. Most of the time, DVDs are just fine on HDTVs. Not saying Blu-Ray isn't better, but for most people DVD is just fine, and yes, they've seen HD in action. Just because you love it, doesn't mean everyone else will. And yes, most of the problems I have about HD is the price and how absolutely unnecessary it really is. And I personally think the HD formats are pretty pointless too. Why do we need that much storage space (besides the HD image quality)? I don't have time to watch 20+ hours of extra features. That's ridiculous.

Oh I have seen HD-DVD or Blu-Ray quality vids and they do look nice. It's just for me, it's not enough to justify spending $400 for a player.

It will be interesting to see that if Blu-Ray wins, what Microsoft will do for their optical drive in the next Xbox. Just some food for thought...

It really isn't that much food for thought. I think it'll be obvious. Whatever HD format "wins" or rather "beats out the other", will become the defacto standard for data storage as well. Unless there's a gigantic breakthrough in flash memory or something that allows for hundreds of GB at the same cost as a plastic disc (unlikely), then HD-DVD or Blu-ray will be used by everybody.

Or a third thing. Between this gen and next, holographic or some similar media storage my leapfrog HD-DVD/Blu-ray and become the next standard. Perhaps even Mini HD (holographic discs) would be used for games, since you can still hold something like 500 gig on the mini version.

Well clearly there was some food for thought there as you so wonderfully dilleneated the future of next-generation disc formats. Mea culpa for being so initially shallow.

Points to ponder:

1. Have you ever heard of anyone NOT having a problem w/ Blockbuster? How many times have you argued that you got a movie in on time & the computer says it was late? F them.

2. Target's frogs won't let the Salvation Army or the Girl Scouts outside their stores to raise money. F them (but they'd like it - dirty French)

I've had the HD DVD add-on for the 360 since the day it launched and have been happy with the device. I like the 360 more and didn't want to spend a bunch of money to get a standalone player (whether that be Blu-Ray or HD DVD). At the time 200 bucks for the HD player, a movie and the media remote was a steal to me. Now you can get one with 5 movies at 20 bucks cheaper....no brainer to anyone that owns a 360 in my opinion. If the format fails then you still can enjoy the movies anyways. I haven't gone buying crazy for HD DVDs (30 bucks a piece in most cases is high) but have built my collection up to around 12 or so. 300 looks fantastic and has some really cool features like the bluescreen PIP. Many HD DVDs have the HD PIP special features which I like. Will Blu-ray get that feature? I'm sure they will...and that's cool. Enjoy what you will. For now I'll be enjoying some fantastic looking HD DVDs.

Blu-ray will get those features by October of this year. It is called BD-Java. This will allow for all kinds of interactive extras for each BD release.

As for cost, most BD movies on Amazon.com are $25 for new releases. Catalog releases are in the middle teens.

And yes I concur, the picture is fantastic and I have a really hard time watching any movie in SD upscaled.

@Free Thinker
Blu-ray will get those features, and unless you are using a PS3 to view them (nearly every current standalone player) you will have to buy a new player to be able to view them, as current players are not Blu-ray profile 1.1 compatible.

and your point is... well if you didnt understand mines is look at the top of that list. is is blu-ray, no it is not, the most sold blu-ray product is 12th. That means theres 11 other products selling far more then 300 blu-ray. When that time that a blu-ray movie hits #1 spot...then blu-ray owners can rest assured that their technology is relevant...you do know what relevant means or do i have too explain that out for you too kordova

YAY my movie looks good... but damn It looks like i'm watching the news on a 56k dial up modem. well at least the numbers prove that this format sucks. Both really have no advantage over regular DVD. And they both cost ridiculously more.

"but we'd prefer people spending their money on a couple extra games instead of possibly throwing their money away on a console attachment for a dying not-selling-as-well format."

Screw you guys. I don't need some gaming blog to tell me what high definition movie format to buy or insult me in the process.

I'm NOT interested in Blu-Ray or HD-DVD, and I blame the manufacturers for coming out with two competing formats. What this has to do with gaming, I'll never know. But as long as you're talking about Blu-Ray and HD DVD player sales, why not also discuss DVD player and downloadable movie sales?

Actually, downloadable movies on Live Marketplace have been discussed before. You're just going to have to accept the fact these consoles are playing a big role in a major format war and that makes the news relevant to many gamers.

I thought size mattered more than refresh rate and contrast ratio when my father purchased a 50' DLP on the cheap ($2500 about 2 1/2 years ago).

But prices have come down a bunch and it's not unrealistic to get a nice 42' 1080p LCD today for under $1600. The higher end Samsung's and Sharp's have much better contrast ratios, which actually does make a huge difference when playing games, watching movies, etc. I spoke praises of DLP tech when I first was exposed to high definition televisions, but unless you want a reasonably priced 60'' television, LCD or Plasma is the way to go (Plasma being the more consistent of the two if price is no concern).

I could give a flying Frak about who wins this war.

I just want my BSG on HD-DVD, season 1 coming Dec. 4th. If HD DVD does fail, I'll be the one buying 20 different used 360 HD DVD attachments for cheap, putting one disc of BSG in each one, and then possibly glueing them shut and hooking it all into a massive USB switcher.

The numbers really mean jack in the grand scheme of things. All it takes is one guy sitting in a high back leather chair somewhere to say "this is the winner" and that's how it'll be. I don't think people realize how meaningless their "vote" or their dollar really is. This applies to pretty much everything.
