Super Smash Bros. Brawl includes sticker collection
Karma is a funny thing. We used to scoff at the bug-collecting nerdlinger, then we got addicted to Pokemon and that kid wouldn't even be seen talking with us. We used to laugh at the Baja jacket-clad guitarist sitting in the hallway trying to get girls interested as he fumbled his way through "Stairway," then Guitar Hero turned us into that exact guy, but with a toy guitar. Now, Super Smash Bros. Brawl has seen fit to punish us for making fun of the girl who adorned her binder with so many stickers that Fredrick von Trapperkeeper himself wouldn't have recognized it.
With the new sticker collection feature you'll be, well, collecting stickers that you earn by playing the game featuring beloved Nintendo characters and putting them in an album. No, there's no practical purpose for collecting them and no, that won't stop us from going after them like we were Tommy Lee Jones and they were Harrison Ford ... or we were Harrison Ford and they were the One-Armed Man. Something like that. You might feel tempted to laugh at us as we scamper after our adhesive prize, but remember ... karma's watching.

My stickerz, let me show you them.
James @ Aug 16th 2007 8:49AM
There is no way Smash Bros Brawl could get any better. Let us sit in silence and smile, and wait.
embassy @ Aug 16th 2007 3:35PM
online...multiplayer?
yeh i think that would make it better, too.
syco @ Aug 16th 2007 6:02PM
I wouldn't say it would make it worse, but I don't really consider online multiplayer to be anything worthwhile, so it basically has no impact on me.
Chris @ Aug 16th 2007 8:50AM
Maybe this is to replace the trophies found in Melee?
Zertoss @ Aug 16th 2007 9:53AM
The Smash Bros. blog post (plus the fact that there are assist trophies) makes it sound like the trophies will be in the game too.
DBX00 @ Aug 16th 2007 8:53AM
Are you serious? Pretty clear that the Wii is for the kids; a fighting game with stickers??? Give me a break.
Grog @ Aug 16th 2007 8:58AM
I find this amusing, since I grew up playing Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter II when I was a kid, but have played the Smash Bros. series as an adult. This is, as ever, merely an addition to a rather odd game, and probably created more for the sake of Japanese gamers than for kids.
Crono @ Aug 16th 2007 9:10AM
And lets not forget all the SFII and MK3 stickers you could get out of those cheap ass sticker vending machines at wal-mart.
OH NOES, TEH FITING GAEM W/ STICKERS LOLERCOPTER WII SUXXORS.
megaStryke @ Aug 16th 2007 9:12AM
And let us not forget the "kiddy" kart racing modes in the latest "mature" Mortal Kombat games.
ForceUnleashed @ Aug 16th 2007 9:17AM
Remember guys this is a sony fanboy we're talking about.
Hypocrite I dub thee.
As for the stickers I'll wait and see what exactly they're used for (if at all) before I determine how much I like them.
Either way though this is EXTRA content and nothing extra can be bad in my opinion so long as the necessary stuff to make the game excellent is already there.
I seriously cannot wait for this game to come out!
jadenguy @ Aug 16th 2007 9:12AM
It probably is more for Japanese gamers; those Japanese sure do enjoy their tchotchki. I'm not going to lie and say that the first wario ware's stickers pwned my world.
Obie @ Aug 16th 2007 9:19AM
Little touches like this make the game special.
What would make it REALLY special, would be online play. ;)
DBX00 @ Aug 16th 2007 9:24AM
Street Fighter and MK stickers in a vending machine is the equivalent of having a cartoon or action figures. It's not an element of the game but something to market the game toward a specific group; just like finishing moves were to attract an older audience. A racing mini game although not mature content is far from stickers that serve no entertainment value for anyone other than children. Let's be clear, Nintendo is not the only offender of making franchises catered toward children; however, they are the only ones that try to claim that they are expanding the market to all age groups when in reality they are simply targetting children and people at the retirement age.
Captain Jody Anthony XVIII @ Aug 16th 2007 9:27AM
hey dbx, nobody cares if you dont like the game. all you're doing is making a fool of yourself.
megaStryke @ Aug 16th 2007 9:39AM
Let's expand on the term... err... "expand," shall we?
To expand the market is to extend beyond the current consumer base, correct? So if the consumers that have always purchased Nintendo machines continue to do so, regardless of how Nintendo markets to them, it would make sense to focus strongly outside of that demographic, i.e. "children and people at the retirement age." So in other words, they are doing exactly what they said they wanted to do.
Anyway, sticker collection is no different than any other collect-a-thon in any other video game, including those oh-so "mature" titles that you seem fond of. Achievement points on Live, Precursor Orbs in Jak, packages in Grand Theft Auto, etc. You get the idea.
Grog @ Aug 16th 2007 9:46AM
Are you serious? Finishing moves were brought in for *adults*?! That was the biggest draw for me and my friends in 5th grade playing MK and MKII: you could see Scorpion rip someone's spine out!
Kazi @ Aug 16th 2007 10:33AM
"just like finishing moves were to attract an older audience."
That right there, no.
Crono @ Aug 16th 2007 11:19AM
Wait, I must have read this wrong. The stickers are "in game" stickers?
Joshua @ Aug 16th 2007 9:35AM
Bit by bit I see that the Wii just isn't meant for me. I'm glad others love it but I need to accept that my love of Nintendo has gone.
Captain Jody Anthony XVIII @ Aug 16th 2007 9:37AM
thats too bad. nintendo makes some great games. then again so do most other companies, so it's not like you'd have a lack of games to play.
hvnlysoldr @ Aug 16th 2007 9:36AM
Saved screenshots sent over WiiConnect24? AWESOME!
Konny @ Aug 16th 2007 9:43AM
Lame... everyone is waiting to hear about online play (or the lack thereof) and they announce this crap. My bets are on sticker trading as the online component.
megaStryke @ Aug 16th 2007 9:45AM
Go play some Mortal Kombat Kart Racing, please.
Word of the street. @ Aug 16th 2007 11:04AM
Megastrike please don’t make fun of Mortal Kombat Armageddon, it was a tragic event for every MK fan out there.
Also if my memory doesn’t fail me MK:A is also available for the Wii, so I don’t get you. Everyone knows that MK is played mostly by people that shouldn’t like people with less than 18 years, even Midway know this.
I don’t agree with konny but there isn’t a reason to insult MK fans.
megaStryke @ Aug 16th 2007 12:34PM
Well, the issue here is that the stickers solidify Smash Bros. as a "kiddy" game. My counter-argument is that MKA has a kart racing minigame, and since kart racing is generally considered a "kiddy" activity then its inclusion makes the entire game "kiddy." See, what I did was highlight how stupid it is to bash a particular game for containing a throwaway element intended for people who want something else to do outside of the main game. As you can see just a few posts up, I made a similar post to this one in fewer words.
To you, I say: Read better, please.
Shadow El @ Aug 16th 2007 9:49AM
For all you asses bashing sticker collecting:
If you don't think it's a good idea, don't implement the feature. Same as if you didn't like trophies in SSBM, you didn't have to look at them. If you didn't like Camera Mode, you didn't have to use it.
Stickers are a bonus mode akin to those. They don't influence actual gameplay, but they're a fun little minigame. I don't know how that can possibly turn a great game into shit.
Majortom1981 @ Aug 16th 2007 9:52AM
I hate when news websites completely miss half of the story they are writing about.
This same news announcement also states in game screenshots that can be saved (hopefully as a jpg or gif file on your sd card) and these same stickers can be used to make comics that can be shared.
I think it is a great feature especially if you can take screenshots during the game and save them to your sd card.
Martin @ Aug 16th 2007 10:09AM
Let's just hope it doesn't require a camera attachment. Ooh, sick burn.
Well, not really. But I thought it was funny.
Radicoon @ Aug 16th 2007 10:17AM
Nice Fugitive reference. One of my favorite movies. Were you reminded of it after it came on TV a couple nights back?
Word of the street. @ Aug 16th 2007 11:08AM
I hate you so much also stop with the off topic post. You arent cool.
Radicoon @ Aug 16th 2007 11:21AM
Good job! First funny post! =D
daniel @ Aug 16th 2007 10:18AM
collecting stickers and trophies, are we sure rare havent secretly gone back to nintendo and are developing this
Shadow El @ Aug 16th 2007 10:21AM
I'm sure, but OH MY GOSH that would be awesome.
SGT Grumbles @ Aug 16th 2007 10:52AM
Banjo and Kazooie would be an unstoppable force of awesome.
I don't know how they could balance it out...
Word of the street. @ Aug 16th 2007 10:59AM
I guess is fine but I'm the kind of person that would like un-lockable such as the game soundtrack, mirror match mode, New weapons, costumes and gadgets or a way to create your own level etc etc.
So I will simply smile until they reveal Solid Snake, Sonic and NiGHTS.
The only thing that disappoints me about this game is that Ash didn’t make an appearance, Also isn’t the pokemon trainer from Pokemon Red. It looks kind of familiar.
megaStryke @ Aug 16th 2007 12:36PM
Ash is non-canonical in the world of the Pokemon games. Have we not gone over this in a previous topic?
BPM @ Aug 16th 2007 1:26PM
This version of Red is from FireRed/LeafGreen.
Kevin @ Aug 16th 2007 11:34AM
There's something kinda suspicious to me about the shape of that sticker...
It looks strikingly similar to the shape of the broad side of the Wii...
LM @ Aug 16th 2007 11:41AM
Isn't this just the new equivalent of the trophies in the GCN version? It seems optional so I don't know why why some people are getting their panties in a bunch.
Eian @ Aug 16th 2007 12:15PM
mmmm stikerz.
Tim @ Aug 16th 2007 12:16PM
Remember what they did with Pokémon Snap back in the day? Maybe they might be planning something like that.
T3H WICKERMAN @ Aug 16th 2007 12:30PM
This is very new and exciting...
Almack64 @ Aug 16th 2007 3:43PM
Ultra new and exciting
Joshua @ Aug 16th 2007 1:53PM
I like how the screenshots show the controls for a GameCube controller. Shows that Sakurai/the development team really does/do think the game is better with a GameCube controller. :)
Meowzers @ Aug 16th 2007 1:57PM
I wish they were real stickers. I'd put them all over everything: my computer, Playstations, Wii, dresser.....
Mr Khan @ Aug 16th 2007 6:16PM
Yeah, i would bet on trophies still being in there, since they play such a key role in the "story" mode. Also considering some of the stickers they've shown are from characters too esoteric to include as trophies (like Gordo from Kirby, or a character from Wild Gunman)
But i too fear that the online sticker exchange may be the sum of this game's online component, considering that the Melee purists assigned to Brawl may be averse to putting a twitch-fighting game online (the kind of people who would freak out about insignificant lag)
heckthor @ Aug 17th 2007 4:39AM
i dont care if it seems "kiddy" i collect all the trophies in SSBM, collected bugs in Zelda: Twilight Princess, Scarabs in Ninja Gaiden, COG Tags in Gears of War, so collecting stickers doesn't sound so bad, besides you can always choose NOT TO. Gamer Discretion is adviced.!!!
