Cruelty-free web gaming with PETA's Super Chick Sisters
"Colonel Sanders and his minions have kidnapped Pamela Anderson for revealing to the world that KFC's secret recipe is cruelty to chickens." So begins PETA's trippy Super Chick Sisters, a web-based Flash platformer that pushes allegations of mistreated chickens as you play.
Vegetarians will like the game for its message, but gamers will like the surprisingly decent controls and level design in this quick, five-level game. They'll also appreciate infringement-tastic cut scenes featuring Mario and Luigi sidelined with Wii-related injuries and beat up by People for the Ethical Treatment of Turtles. Oh, and did we mention the final boss: A robotic spider Colonel Sanders wearing a Bowser mask? Spoiler alert!

I could reeeeaaaaaalllllly go for a bucket of original recipe right about now. Mmmmmm.... drumsticks.

So does this mean I get to eat twice my share of chicken since PETA isn't using their share of the dead animal supply?

Does PETA not have to follow copyright laws since it protects chickens from my stomach? This doesn't looks like fair-use parody to me.
BPM @ Aug 17th 2007 11:11AM
Nah, I'd say it is covered under Fair-Use. It's an obvious parody, yes. But it isn't an exact copy of Nintendo's mascots, nor is it for profit.
Dale @ Aug 18th 2007 4:16AM
@BPM, it clearly shows and names Toad, Mario and Luigi; namechecks the Wii by its name and not a parody name, and features a caricature of Pamela Anderson in a Princess Peach costume. That's beyond Fair Use.
Joshua @ Aug 17th 2007 10:26AM
So do I slide down the flag pole at the end of each level or does Pam award you with a pole dance?
KirbyMeister @ Aug 17th 2007 10:56AM
you slide down the flag pole, but you're replacing a KFC flag with a PeTA flag.
mcatrage @ Aug 17th 2007 10:26AM
But what if I don't want to save Pam Anderson and definitely don't consider her a princess?

I sure hope someone calls Nintendo soon and has them pull that off, seems a bit overly obvious to me...
Sides it's a good thing Mario was sidelined, he would have ate all the chicken and said "Hey... what's the problem?"
Andy S. @ Aug 17th 2007 10:45AM
Remember how PETA sued humor site peta.org out of existence because PETA is primarily staffed by brain-dead douchebag hippies who decided that owning peta.com wasn't already enough (and, really, they should have registered peta.org instead in the first place, since they are an ORGanization and not a COMpany, but you know... douchebags, and all)?
Yeah, good times. Keep up the fine work, fascists.

I'm a member of PETA. It's a mixture of funny and annoying to see all the dolts groan about PETA as they've bought into the anti-PETA messages out there.
Aside from the occasional stunt, it's really NOT that extremist of an organization.
That said, KFC really is ruthlessly cruel to their animals, at least as of a few years ago. They were supposedly going to change their act, but I'm not sure if they ever did.

I like Penn & Teller's show, but even they freely admit on their own show multiple times that they're propaganda and slant everything severely towards their POV.
If I had the time, I'd scour YouTube for pro-PETA propaganda for you.
borland502 @ Aug 17th 2007 11:13AM
Sam, I hate to say it but PETA is one of those organizations that get despised across the political spectrum. It's not just that their methods are perceived as extreme, it's that their methods are also perceived as stupid and juvenile.
I like seeing naked women, but how does seeing breasts make me feel bad about shooting bambi? This game is typical of their tactics. It's a protest that parodies the PETA organization as much as it parodies KFC and Nintendo. Those that aren't laughing at this game, are probably members of the cause already.
Do you know that there are better tactics? I have vegetarian neighbors that invited me to a grillout. They served up a garden burger that was surprisingly good and did not taste like ass. They were nice, polite, and were not pricks about my own choice.
They, unlike PETA, at least got me thinking that I probably eat too much meat. You might want to bring up that more effective tactic at the next "get naked for Thumper" meeting.
Crono @ Aug 17th 2007 11:13AM
I thought you were smarter than that, Samfish.
Did you know Peta sent a nastygram to the president of USC (south carolina, Gamecocks), to try and get us to change our mascot, get this, because it encouraged cock fighting.
Nevermind the Gamecock was a nickname for a Revolutionary War Hero (contemporary of the swamp fox).
Peta is full of idiots and morons who can't see past their own nose, and then run out to protests to make fools of themselves.
I mean, these are the same people who tried to get "pet owners" changed to "pet guardian", because you can't own an animal. Well I do own an animal, 2 of them. And they are legally my property. If someone stole them, it would be theft, not kidnapping.
ANIMALS ARE NOT PEOPLE TOO!
Mike @ Aug 17th 2007 11:40AM
Here's the thing - I'm in favor of eliminating cruelty to animals whenever possible. When given the choice, I'll always take free range poultry products.
PETA frequently goes too far. I don't know whether KFC has or hasn't changed it's ways at all, but even if they haven't, that's no excuse for copyright infringement, or the general villainization of colonel Sanders - the guy's dead.... I'm pretty sure he has little say in what the company does these days.
I guess the point I'm making is that it's great to want to do away with cruelty to animals, however, it's not so great to pour a bucket of blood on someone because they disagree with you.
Norm @ Aug 17th 2007 12:09PM
I'm for everything PETA stands for and I used to be a member, but I grew up, and realized that the things they do only serve to alienate people from vegetarianism and kindness to animals even more. Untill they learn how to market effectively and stop trying to insult everyone that doesn't share their point of view, I can't support them.
Gary Combs @ Aug 17th 2007 12:26PM
Anti-PETA message? I think its the other way around, PETA has an anti-reality message. I can respect not wanting animal testing or cruelty to animals, or the desire to be vegetarians, but not wanting people to own pets and killing animals themselves is totally off.

Okay, I have something to point out. The Komodo Dragon, though one of the largest and most aggressive lizards in the world, is still part of the animal kingdom. It has no poison, but its teeth have a bacteria that will cause almost certain infection to anything it bites, usually resulting in its victim rotting to death while still alive. Typically, the Komodo Dragon will not attempt to kill its prey outright, but will instead cause enough damage to ensure infection, and then track its victim by the scent of its blood until it finally succumbs to the infection and dies.
Knowing this, one wonders why Peta makes such a big deal when people are supposedly cruel to animals. Are they actually interested in protecting animals? or did they realize that there were a bunch of suckers out there who would go "Oh, those poor animals!" and then donate gratuitous amounts of money and support while Peta itself doesn't have to do anything productive at all, just carry signs and yell a bunch on TV and look for corporations to try to attack.
I'm not supporting cruelty to animals. I like animals, but as far as I am concerned, Peta is just another Political group looking for a way to control other people.
My breakdown is this: When an animal is a Pet, there must be love given. When an animal is Prey, and you are the hunter, there must be respect given. When an animal is Produce, it is Produce, the same as any vegetable.
Maybe it is cruel, but people gotta eat too, and thank you, I'm going to work on protecting my own species before I start trying to save the entire animal kingdom.

Not a member of peta, but a member of viva and veggie and that (well vegan).
Also: I eat more junk food than all, I honestly believe though in not killing stuff for food. And ya know, if you are going to do it you could atleast do it without cruelty.
Anticrawl @ Aug 17th 2007 6:48PM
You tell that to my youngest sister, who was traumatized by a pamplet given out when we were waiting in line for warped tour. This flyer(from PETA) targeted towards these teens and kids telling them their parents were evil for killing animals by eating them. Had graphic images of animals being tortured in India(I hardly think that has anything to do with people in America) and more or less sending vegan supprimasist messages towards this innocent child.
I don't see why you would protect an organization that uses scare tactics and a form of terrorism to control and warp the minds of the youth for their own personal aggenda. I have canine teeth in my mouth like most humans and incisors, those were meant for tearing and ripping flesh and I will continue to do so and fight back against this terrorist movement. Why can't they promote their views in a peiceful manner.
Bluebrake @ Aug 17th 2007 8:27PM
"KFC is ruthlessly cruel to their animals"?
KFC doesn't have any animals. They buy their chickens from major regional suppliers, the same place your local grocery store does. The only difference is that KFC carefully picks the absolute smallest birds that no one else wants.
Bluebrake @ Aug 17th 2007 8:28PM
Oh, and I forgot...
God, I hate PETA. An absolutely ignorant, obnoxious, despicable organization. You should be ashamed of yourself for being part of it.

I thought the controls are supposed to be good... I kept falling (and I don't fall all that often in Mario games). I think the characters don't accelerate fast enough when running, and when you're big it's near impossible to jump through tight spaces. I gave up on level 2.

Anti-PETA messages have been implanted into your brains by the meat industry and Fox News. Anyways, how can I download the flash game in case it gets pulled?
Penguin Warlord @ Aug 17th 2007 11:04AM
Funny how I'm anti PETA and at the same time loathe FOX news and haven't seen any invasive advertising from the meat industy (if only PETA could say the same). Personally I love meat it tastes amazing (unlike soy adn tofu) and will never even consider becoming a vegetarian until PETA stops going door to door and stops running advertising campaigns showing tortureds animals. If I wanted to see that I would look it up but frankly it's groos and depressing and doesn't apply to me since I eat primarily organic meat.
If you wanna download the game use the Flashgot plugin in Mozilla.
P.S. Vegans suck.

wait wait wait. I've been brainwashed by the meat industry and Fox News? I don't get Fox News (or at least don't know what channel it's on) and wouldn't watch it anyways. I also can't remember the last time I saw a piece about PETA that wasn't trying to make me feel like a prick for eating a steak once in a while. In fact, my opinion of PETA comes from my extreme dislike of getting harassed for the types of food I eat.
Avatar @ Aug 17th 2007 8:07PM
What about the rest of the world that hates PETA too? I'm Canadian, I don't even get Fox, or care to. But I still think PETA, like any extremist groups, needs to calm the hell down and back off. Personally, my issue with them is that they tell people they *should not* eat meat. I say fuck that. No one tells me what to choose to do, my choices are mine, not some loony's.
Blue @ Aug 17th 2007 10:57AM
My gods, the sisters, their hats only draw attention to their lack of pants!
Samfish: I don't have a problem with PETA making this game, and I'm not about to call you an extremist, but the people in charge of PETA are at the very least hypocrites.
Their members advocate the attacks on labs that use animal-testing, while enjoying the benefits from such labs (like penicillin). They sponsor people to go into classrooms to spread false information (like how results from animal testing can't be applied to other species) and teach how to make simple explosives. They compare themselves to Martin Luther King and Ghandi, when there is a very clear and fundamental difference: NON-VIOLENCE.
Oh and my favorite bit of all: those animals that PETA "liberates" from animal-shelters? They euthanized(Re: KILLED) most of them. The President Ingrid Newkirk even makes the statement: "Sometimes, the only humane thing is to put them to sleep." In other words, PETA kills animals while attacking other places for killing animals.
samfish @ Aug 17th 2007 11:06AM
See, you're falling for the anti-PETA propaganda, though.
PETA has never advocated violence against labs or processing plants and the like. If they ever had, the government would have long since taken care of them.
Jason @ Aug 17th 2007 11:08AM
I think PETA's problem is that it has a disparate base of different degrees of extremism. Being a researcher myself, I see the value in using animals for testing. We always treat the animals humanely. Being a vegetarian, as well, I agree with PETA's messages about the food industry and how they mistreat animals. You've heard the stories yourselves from other sources besides PETA. It's not something they made up. And I think that is PETA's overall message: not to treat animals inhumanely. The further extremist stances have been mixed in and people like yourself have latched on to them to dilute the issue of humane treatment for animals. I know some people just plain don't care about animals and would do any sort of torture or cruelty to them because they view them as walking lunches and dinners. That's fine, those people's minds are closed and their view will win. I accept it, and I don't join PETA because I'm not out to change people's minds. I'll just live my own way.
Blue @ Aug 17th 2007 11:46AM
Fair enough. PETA's official stance on violence is that they "neither condone it, nor condemn it, but that they understand it."
But what about the Animal Liberation Front? (You'll see where I'm going with this in a second)
When Ingrid Newkirk calls Rodney Coronado a "Fine young man," it's hard to see how she DOESN'T advocate violence. Rodney Coronado is a member of Earth First Movement, Sea Shepard, Animal Liberation Front. He fire-bombed a lab and admitted to six other arsons. PETA sent $45,200 to the Rodney Coronado Support Committee. They also made a loan to Ray Coronado of $25,000.
Gary Yuroufsky, has been convicted of Animal Liberation Front crimes. He's on PETA's payroll, as their official orator. He goes into junior high schools and high schools spreading his word. (By the way, the guy who claims he's just like King Jr., Ghandi, and Jesus.)
So yeah, PETA doesn't advocate violence. They just financially support those that do. (It's wonderful what you can find out from PETA's tax returns. As a tax-free organization, those records are public-record)
While PETA may have varying bases of extremism, its PRESIDENT praises a condemned and confessed extremist, and PETA has sent money to others.
Oh, one statistic. PETA euthanized 1325 animals at its HEADQUARTERS, of the 2103 that it took in. That's almost 2/3 of the animals they rescued.
megaStryke @ Aug 17th 2007 10:56AM

I'm all for protecting animals, but there's absolutely no denying that they're a very seedy organization.... and anyone who has the goal of protecting animals, definitely should avoid aligning themselves with them.
