Dreamcast still strong, two new indie games at Leipzig
Coming up on its eight birthday, the Sega Dreamcast continues to prove that it's worthy of attention, with two new independent titles announced for the aging system. Publisher RedSpotGames will be debuting these titles at this year's Leipzig Games Convention, starting this Wednesday.
The first game, Dalforce, is a vertical-scrolling "bullet hell" shooter title which allows for up to four players. The second, Wind and Water Puzzle Battles, is an action puzzle game being ported from the GP2X. According to Arcade Renaissance, both games are scheduled for first-quarter 2008 releases, although RedSpotGames' website is currently down for maintenance, and we can not confirm this. Both titles will, however, be shown off at Leipzig this week, so stay frosty as we bring you more details once the conference gets under way.

Dreamcast FTW!!
Smoke_Dawg_187 @ Aug 20th 2007 3:31PM
I love the Dreamcast. I was just playing Crazy Taxi and Bass Fishing the other day.
megaStryke @ Aug 20th 2007 3:32PM
*gasp* A new shooter for the Dreamcast! I would have never guessed!
HolyChachi @ Aug 20th 2007 3:33PM
dreamcast was awesome....i dunno why it didnt catch on...imagine how great the world would be without microsoft
Stevo @ Aug 20th 2007 3:46PM
haha, what does the Dreamcast's failure and Xbox's emergence have to do with one another?
I personally liked the Dreamcast more than the Xbox (especially if you take Halo out of the equation)...funny though-- I think I've already assembled a better library w/ my X360 than both of 'em when you count my preorders for Halo 3 and Mass Effect.
Smoke_Dawg_187 @ Aug 20th 2007 3:48PM
What kind of stupid comment is that? What does Microsoft have to do with this? It was the PS2's hype and a bunch of Sega misteps like 32X and Saturn that held consumers back from enjoying the console.
And if you looked at the front of the Dreamcast there was a MS Windows symbol on the front.
mrajh @ Aug 20th 2007 3:36PM
The first system I bought and returned on the same day. There is a reason this turd is gone.
Akiosarin @ Aug 20th 2007 10:57PM
I think you got dooped, who the hell buys a turd anyway. ^__^
GRANTED @ Aug 20th 2007 3:56PM
hahahaha PS2FTW
im glad there was some variety in this board. i would be bored to tears if everyone just reminisced re: this story.
we need more posts like this--and no i'm not being sarcastic.

I had my Dreamcast since 9/9/99, still works perfect to this day ....the legend will never die!!! Its kinda poetic that on launch day we got Soul Caliber, that spoke those words. The Dreamcast was the LAST TRUE HARDCORE console made. Sega please come back to the hardware biz =(
samfish @ Aug 20th 2007 3:47PM
I don't think it was the last "true hardcore console" ever made, so much as it finally signaled the end to the Golden Era of gaming.
Oh, how I wish to have it back...
DarthDavid @ Aug 20th 2007 4:02PM
@samfish
The Golden Era was hardcore....when you say that the Dreamcast was the the end the the Golden Era, your saying the same thing I said. Do you really think that after the Dreamcast there was a console that can be called "Hardcore"?
samfish @ Aug 20th 2007 4:13PM
"Do you really think that after the Dreamcast there was a console that can be called "Hardcore"?"
I think you could easily call the 360 a "hardcore" console.
The thing is that after the "Golden Era" ended, the definition of "hardcore" also underwent something of a fundamental change. Thus, the Dreamcast's concept of hardcore isn't the same as the 360's concept of hardcore.
We're obviously both on the same page, though!
DarthDavid @ Aug 20th 2007 4:19PM
Your right...besides I can't get mad at a naked Peach =)
Hardcore gamers for L I F E!
Ocho @ Aug 20th 2007 4:42PM
The Vectrex was the LAST HARDCORE CONSOLE. Everything afterwards should be met with an unreasonable amount of disdain, preferably in a manner that shows that you are more elite than those fools who didn't appreciate the Vectrex's true genius.
samfish @ Aug 20th 2007 4:48PM
Vectrex? No, no no, good sir. I believe you're thinking of the Wonder Swan.
samfish @ Aug 20th 2007 3:45PM
Awesome. I picked one up on the cheap recently. I hope this are good.
BPM @ Aug 20th 2007 3:49PM
I thought Sega stopped producing GD-ROMs a while back...
What are they making them on, then? Standard CDs? Dreamcast could play games off of them without being modded (but for backups to work of most games, they had to be compressed, since GD-ROMs had more storage than CDs, and some games aren't playable at all this way).
john @ Aug 20th 2007 3:49PM
what is the point of releasing a game for a system you can't even buy in a retail store anymore?
Dale @ Aug 20th 2007 5:11PM
A fervent installed user base maybe? While maybe not existing in PS2 numbers, there are still plenty of DC fans out there who still use their systems.
MadMup @ Aug 20th 2007 3:51PM
Now which of my two working Dreamcasts should I bust out to play these?
The DC is still one of my favorite systems ever, to this day.
OnimushaSoki @ Aug 21st 2007 6:51AM
LoL... Glad I wasn't the only one who did that. When I saw that Dreamcast wasn't going to be carried in major retail stores anymore, I quickly snagged a second one... just in case the first dies out.
...sad that it lasted longer(durability/functionality-wise)than one of my newer consoles. ¬_¬"
Kiki @ Aug 20th 2007 3:58PM
Now I'll finally have something to recitfy my 250 dollar limited eddition Hello Kitty dreamcast that I bought a few months ago. (Despite already having a Dreamcast since launch.)
just.Rob @ Aug 20th 2007 3:58PM
Typing of the Dead
Game Over
Kye @ Aug 20th 2007 4:02PM
The DC is hawt!
Wish Sega woul make a return to gaming.
Better yet, join forces with Nintendo.
hvnlysoldr @ Aug 20th 2007 4:18PM
If only Sega did join Nintendo after they dropped out. Ahh if only they became glorious partners we could have stolen Sonic and Yuji Naka.

I still have my DC hooked up to my 42" Plasma...
I love it, its a great system. Some of the best games were only released on Dreamcast. Shenmue, the Original Soul Caliber...and it was the first to see Skies of Arcadia, Crazy Taxi, Alien Front, Grandia II etc...
I'm gonna play some Mars Matrix tonight!
Almack64 @ Aug 20th 2007 4:14PM
Don't speak of Shenmue it makes me sad. :(
Almack64 @ Aug 20th 2007 4:11PM
The Dreamcast was the system that delivered me from my blind Nintendo fanboyism. That system had some of the greatest launch titles ever, to bad we will never see what could have been done in its later years.
Almack64 @ Aug 20th 2007 4:13PM
Please dpn't speak of Shenmue it makes me sad.
b6cdd678 @ Aug 20th 2007 4:14PM
Stupid half broken reply system...
kevin_s @ Aug 20th 2007 4:14PM
Ah, the Dreamcast. I don't have mine anymore, but I still remember it vividly. I got mine at 5:00am on 9/9/1999. I bought Soul Calibur and NFL 2K. When I got it home, I was blown away... To this day, it's the console that brings back the fondest memories. I got it when I was a 20-year old in college. Can't believe it's been 8 years already! Sure do miss those days!
Almack64 @ Aug 20th 2007 4:20PM
I actually bought mine of a hallmate in school. I've been gaming for a long time but think some my best gaming memories were with the DC. I actually sold mine last year to help pay for my honeymoon. Worse decision ever made (selling the DC, not the honeymoon that was one of my best decisions but I could have saved the amount of money I got for the dreamcast by eating ramen for a few days)
kevin_s @ Aug 20th 2007 4:26PM
Hey Almack, you can buy a used DC for dirt cheap now. There's a local game shop near me that sells them for $25-30 depending on the condition. And the games are anywhere from $2 - $15 depending on rarity. Or, you could download them from the internet. Easy to find, and the DC uses a simple boot disc.
I'm actually thinking of getting one just to be able to play Soul Calibur, Crazy Taxi, and Power Stone!
swoosh bnd @ Aug 20th 2007 4:23PM
That seems like more than the original xbox is getting.
Anam @ Aug 20th 2007 4:23PM
Someone tell Sony that they're about to be beat in the ten-year-console race.
License to ill @ Aug 20th 2007 4:26PM
The system was D.O.A....
mr nimblewick @ Aug 20th 2007 4:28PM
I remember it set the initial sales record when it first came out. It was dead quickly, but not on arrival.
s.mario @ Aug 20th 2007 4:33PM
I remember having some fast n' furious tournament with Marvel vs. Capcom 2, and one of the more obscure fighters, Project Justice: Rival Schools 2! I don't know why we haven't seen Capcom come out with a sequal to that, it was a fantastic fighting game with vibrant graphics. I also loved Power Stone 2. Another great game that hasn't seen the light of day until the PSP rolled around...
mrajh @ Aug 20th 2007 4:47PM
So what is hardcore? Is it shallow arcade games? Is it a Sonic game that is almost immpossible to control? Don't get me wrong I love PSO, Skies of Arcadia, and Ikaruga ....on Gamecube. This is where Sega started to lose it's ability to make great games. Now look at the crap they put out.
Almack64 @ Aug 20th 2007 5:11PM
What are you smoking. Or are you just trying to add some fuel to the embers that still smolder from last gens console wars.
Diskoboy @ Aug 20th 2007 5:03PM
I've come up with a new motto for the Dreamcast.
Dreamcast: The system that keeps on giving. Even 6 years after it's death.
You gotta love that little, white machine...
mrajh @ Aug 20th 2007 5:18PM
@Almack64
Dreamcast was part of a console war? With what the Phantom or Gizmondo?
Hey I enjoyed many Dreamcast games. I just enjoyed them 2 to 3 years earlier in the arcades.
WiNG @ Aug 20th 2007 5:20PM
You know I regret a lot of game purchases. I regret buying Genesis over SNES, and buying the SegaCD, and the Game Gear. And I regret selling my N64, and all kinds of stuff.
But there is a reason I still have a Dreamcast, with the collector's edition controllers. Simply put it was the greatest game console of its time, by far, and will always get love from indies, since everyone knows its the best. Hell I won't be surprised if there's games coming out at the same time as PS4.
-Shenmue: an experience and a masterpiece
-Jet Grind Radio: If you never played this, buy it now
-Crazy Taxi: Perfect arcade port with insane minigames
-Soul Calibur: The best rated console game of all time.
-Phantasy Star Online: Diablo + lasers + interweb = win
-Virtua Tennis: This game inspred me to learn real tennis
-Marvel vs Capcom vs Street Fighter 3 vs DOA2 vs Power Stone vs Dreamcast = Awesome Fighters
-Sonic Adventure: ok, so I hated this game, ha
-Grandia II: Best RPG fight engine EVAR
-The internet: Yep, you can zoom in, too
-Typing of the Dead: this taught me to type and to learn to laugh at imminent death
-Ikaruga, Mars Matrix... Dreamcast = best shooters evar
-NFL2k: WOW you can PICK PLAYS without OTHER PLAYERS SEEING THEM!!!
Resident Evil: Code Veronica: The best pre RE4 IMO
If you don't own a Dreamcast you're a gaming CHUMP. Get one now for the cost of one 360 controller, or less. Oh I forgot to mention SEGA FTW.
T-bone and Razor @ Aug 20th 2007 5:25PM
Dreamcast will never die so long as the Japanese have their free access to PSO, and we Americans can slice our way onto the now-free JP servers...

damnit, sorry for the double post
DJGeki @ Aug 20th 2007 5:27PM
I've been a fan of the DC for a LONG time. Hell, it was home for my company's first commercial release. We're doing another game for DC, and it will be out before the end of the year. Check our website for more info and the Cryptic Allusion forums: www.cagames.com
Thanks for keeping such an awesome system alive, everyone!
nanomess @ Aug 20th 2007 5:47PM
I miss Sega hardware... it's been a while since they've gone software, but even now I feel like something is missing without them.
Crono @ Aug 20th 2007 5:55PM
Anyone notice that top down shmups are the preferred genre for throwaway consoles? There's already a plethora of them on the DC, and there is/was a plethora of them on the Turbographix. Am I the only one who noticed this?
