If you envision "freedom" as clear skies and sparkling oceans, you're probably not a game developer. If you were, you'd think of it as an enormous pile of money meant to fund your DirectX 10 rendering of said clear skies, sparkling oceans and a freak in a cybersuit prancing by. CEO of Crytek, currently hard at work on tropical first-person shooter Crysis, told GamesIndustry.Biz that having the game published by EA has presented several advantages compared to Ubisoft, which handled that other tropical first-person shooter, Far Cry.
"Everything's just bigger. From a business point of view, we have more support from EA and superior distribution and marketing power behind us, more freedom," said Cevat Yerli. "We can dictate more, and at the same time we can ask for more support. [EA delivers] more, because we both want this to be the best game." Yerli admits that even though Far Cry development got a bit weepy ("There were too many emotions involved back then, it was very passionate..."), he's still grateful for Ubisoft's involvement in getting the developer noticed. "But despite the fact it was rough at the end, I would like to say big thanks to Ubisoft and Yves Guillemot for taking the risk with us. If they hadn't done it, we would never have survived."
Who knows? Perhaps Yerli will run into his old pals again if EA keeps on nibbling at Ubisoft.

But I thought that EA was the devil in disguise...

They are. And most of the time, the disguise isn't all that great. I guess it's relatively important to remember that EA is publishing Crysis, not developing it. EA traditionally likes to get its grubby mits on a lot of games, slap a logo on it and wait for the commissions to roll in. Every now and again, the game is good (like things from Criterion Studios).

more freedom, until they release sequel after watered down sequel and drive the franchise into the ground. sounds great!

Of course there is more freedom; They just throw money at developers and don't really care about the end product because they know the EA label will sell to non-gamers and the stupid.

Cue all the rabid EA haters...

What are the chances of EA not fucking up the multiplayer, or anything that's online in Crysis?

More Freedom = More Money

And of course there is more money.
With Far Cry they were an unknown. Unproven.
With Crysis they are well known, well hyped, and have one major hit under their belts.
Of course the publisher is more free with the cash. They're now a safer investment.

If I was a developer I would much rather have Activision as my big publisher. There is a good reason id has stuck with them through the years.

More freedom with EA? That's an idea Origin Systems Inc. once came up with as well.. may Origin rest in peace.

EA may be good now, just wait for them to tell you to dish out expansion packs that no one plays for a game that is in beta form since it came out...ala Battlefield 2.

I'm kinda wondering what everyone is freaking out about. EA's been the publisher for a while now. That's really not news. What is news is that Crytek is enjoying the relationship. So, what's the beef? It's not like EA snaged the rights to the title, gave the code to their moronic team, and butchered what would be an otherwise great game! Crytek is still behind the wheel here. You all can complain once EA pushes out next years sequel, crysis 08, without the help of Crytek.

Dude it's Ea. There is no doubt that if it sells they will force a sequel with or without the actual creators at the wheel. Ea makes dev teams crank out the same game year after year and rarely tries new properties. They have run so many series into the ground and others into well selling but mediocre sequels. Hell, if you want to buy it I can't blame you but buy it used if you can. Of course I didn't mean I buy all other games, just that I let EA know how I feel using my wallet. Obviously a company needs to make money but at the price of what? Creativity, variety, and storytelling are what we have at stake hear. Don't be an ass, respect others feelings and opinions.
