And I agree with what he said in all 4 languages. I don't disagree that the two formats are basically equal when it comes to playing HD movies. It was when he immediately contradicted that statement with a HDDVD rant that I decided he was full of shit. Or merde, mierda and scheißt if you prefer.

Ok...all you guys seem to be smart so let me ask a question I've had for a GOOD while now:

Alright, if Toshiba is the "owner" of DVD and HD DVD, then why is the ability to playback a DVD incorporated into Blu Ray technology? If I were Toshiba, I would've played hardball from the beginning and tried (if I could've) not to allow Blu Ray the ability to play my format (DVD). Make any sense?

That's not quite the case Toshiba along with some others had developed the Super Density Disc. However in order to stop a stupid format war (like this one) all parties including Sony and Phillips who were developing their own format agreed on adopting a modified version of the Super Density Disc which became known as the DVD.

While you're right about the developing of both DVD and HD DVD being in the hands of Toshiba its not the owner and Toshiba does not have the rights to prohibit others from using the DVD standard.

I jus thope BR wins. Get one format, make it easier for everyone and BR is already in the lead, so why doesn't HD- DVd just throw in the towel. I mean you're getting a better bargin when it comes to a high def movie player. A HD player can't play games, a PS3 can do both. Once more games come out for the PS3, there is more of a potential of movies being sold. if anything, the Paramount DW switch just lit a fire for more games to come out for the PS3 and thus people can watch movies.

Blu ray would look as crappy as it did when they first released it if it were not for the competition from HD DVD. They made they most lazy poor quality movies they could because they are afraid of piracy. Most of the Major studios backed Blu ray because it has superior DRM that is of course of no benefit to the consumer.
Personally I hope the war goes on and on and drives the prices down to current DVD levels.

The Shadows were right, evolution is best served by conflict.

I'm just gonna wait out the blu-ray/hddvd debate until the next format comes out in about 5 years. Dvd's look good enough for me anyway, and my main tv is still a big tube one :)
