Guitar Hero III pre-order box promises Killers, Santana
According to a pre-order box for Guitar Hero III, the Killers and Santana will be joining the roster of tracks that will help the game do battle with Rock Band this fall. The Killers will be supplying "When You Were Young" from their album Sam's Town. Santana volunteers one of his blessedly Rob Thomas-free songs: "Black Magic Woman." (At least, we're pretty sure that's what it says. Sorry about the image quality.)
While the Killers track seems like kind of an out-of-left-field selection, "Black Magic Woman" is a natural fit. We're curious though: Does this mean that we'll get to battle Santana as a Legend of Rock? We'd love topunish thank him personally for Supernatural. We've got a list of all the songs so far after the jump.
[Thanks, NX03]

I think the best news out of this is that the 360 and PS3 guitars are black now. It matches my Elite!
def PD @ Aug 21st 2007 1:02PM
I haven't been really keeping up with the whole GH3/RB thing, but can the GH3 guitar(s) be used playing RB and vice-versa? Also, which game/version of the guitar will have the 5 additional fret buttons?
IlyaG @ Aug 21st 2007 2:07PM
Guitar Hero guitar works with Rock Band. Rock Band guitar has 5 extra buttons.
Probot @ Aug 21st 2007 2:35PM
Guitar Hero guitars can be used with Rock Band. Rock Band guitars cannot be used with Guitar Hero.
This is really only useful if you have the Xbox 360 version of Guitar Hero, since the PS2 guitars don't work with PS3 without some special adapter. (Not just any PS2-PS3 adapter works.)
Personally, I would prefer to try the newer, larger guitars for Rock Band.
Dortamur @ Aug 21st 2007 10:32PM
That doesn't make any sense. Why would the controller with extra buttons not work on the game that requires less? Where'd you read Rock Band guitars couldn't be used with Guitar Hero III? (Citation Needed! -_^)
Probot @ Aug 22nd 2007 2:01AM
"We do intend to support 3rd-party guitar peripherals, including the Guitar Hero controllers, because this kind of interoperability is exactly what gamers want and expect."
- Alex Rigopulos, co-founder and CEO of Harmonix

Yes, the Rock Band controller has more buttons, but the five new fret buttons are optional. They will be used only during solos and won't require any strumming. The source for that is the Game Informer article from a few months ago.
Probot @ Aug 22nd 2007 2:24AM
@Dortamur
I guess I didn't really answer your actual question. There has been no official announcement from Activision about supporting the Rock Band controllers, but I think everyone assumes it's out of the question.
Harmonix knows how to use the Guitar Hero controllers, since they have experience with them. I doubt Harmonix has been kind enough to send over the code for using the Rock Band controllers.
So I guess there really isn't a source for this assumption, but it just seems like common sense to say that Guitar Hero won't support Rock Band guitars.

please have smooth by santana! i would die!!!
Patrick @ Aug 21st 2007 1:24PM
wait, just read the article, whats your problem with supernatural?, ill gut you joystiq! GUT YOU!!!!
RazorD @ Aug 21st 2007 6:59PM
I'd totally love it too. But its probably due to my top secret man crush on rob thomas :(
polar @ Aug 21st 2007 1:12PM
Also PS3 and 360 wireless guitars are the same price?
JJ Rooster @ Aug 21st 2007 1:14PM
I'm still waiting on a more complete song list for Rock Band. So far GH3 is killing it.
DarthDavid @ Aug 21st 2007 1:20PM
GH3 seems to have the better list SO FAR.....doesn't matter, I plan on getting Rock Band for the drums and GH3 for the guitar. Only time will tell on which game will come out on top.
Oneiromancer @ Aug 21st 2007 1:44PM
Santana's "Black Magic Woman" is actually a cover of the Fleetwood Mac song (and early Fleetwood Mac at that, well before Stevie Nicks). Of course, Santana's version is the better and more popular one, but it's surprising how few people know that it's a cover. GH3 will undoubtedly have "as made famous by Santana" since that was definitely the most famous version, although the original did chart in the UK.
Paul @ Aug 21st 2007 3:37PM
The question is, if it was in there, would All Along the Watchtower be famous by Bob Dylan or Jimi Hendrix?
Anam @ Aug 21st 2007 5:47PM
It depends on whose version they are attempting to mimic. Van Halen's cover of You Really Got Me said "as made famous by Van Halen," despite the original being very famous.
Speaking of which, when are they going to put The Kinks in there? They had a bunch of great songs.
Mister Kay @ Aug 21st 2007 11:31PM
I'm a fan of the version of All Along The Watchtower that they had on the season 2 finale of Battlestar Galactica. But I'd have to put my vote down for the Hendrix version
Helloimbob @ Aug 21st 2007 1:42PM
I want AC/DC
Or Dragonforce. LOLZ
IlyaG @ Aug 21st 2007 2:13PM
Dragonforce is in.

Helloimbob @ Aug 21st 2007 2:18PM
Awesome... I'm buying this game now.
Donald @ Aug 21st 2007 2:58PM
Future Joystiq headline:
"Frets on Fire: Dragonforce song causes mass GH3 guitar failures"
doomcloud @ Aug 21st 2007 3:40PM
wait a minute the song is way longer than that

copa @ Aug 21st 2007 1:59PM
Why all the hate on Supernatural? Just because it got overplayed on the radio doesn't mean it isn't good music.
izzy push @ Aug 21st 2007 2:45PM
No, the fact that it is bad music is the reason it is bad music. Just because people like a song doesn't give it any merit.
And I agree, The Killers? People still listen to that fad band? And they play guitars?
@IlyaG: The nail just broke from being hammered on the head too hard.
Y @ Aug 21st 2007 2:16PM
I'd prefer Europa for Santana, but Black Magic Woman is a great song.
>Only time will tell on which game will come out on top.
I think rock band will be the better game without a doubt, though that's all a matter of opinion. However, Guitar Hero II will EASILY outsell Rockband. For one, it has the name recognition, but more importantly it's on PS2 and Wii as well as the other two. It'll blow Rock Band out of the water.
doomcloud @ Aug 21st 2007 2:15PM
im still waiting for mastodons name to pop up
OGHowie @ Aug 21st 2007 2:17PM
Like the new list. Glad I preordered.
The Boo @ Aug 21st 2007 2:21PM
Anyone with eyes knows that says Black Vagina Mullet
Anam @ Aug 21st 2007 5:49PM
That was by Rush, right?
The Boo @ Aug 22nd 2007 9:38AM
Of course, Rush is known as the pussy band.
IlyaG @ Aug 21st 2007 2:21PM
You people don't get it. It's not about which song is the best to listen to, but which is the best to PLAY, wit the most entertaining note charts.
For example: "Smoke on the Water" and "I Wanna Be Sedated" were in the first Guitar Hero. Are these cool song to listen to? Of course. Are they fun to play in the game? ABSOLUTELY NOT.
The Boo @ Aug 21st 2007 2:28PM
I'll tell you my problem with it, it sucks. Sounds like a song for a panty hose commercial.
The Boo @ Aug 21st 2007 2:29PM
@Patrick
Fullmetal Salchemist @ Aug 21st 2007 3:03PM
Yes! The Killers! Shitty butt-rock for the win!
zero @ Aug 21st 2007 4:07PM
I'm hesitant to admit this, but I'm not overly impress with the set list for GH2 :-(
Kyera @ Aug 21st 2007 4:16PM
Hmm, I'm still pretty lukewarm to this soundtrack. Good additions tho, but this soundtrack definitely has a lot of songs I'll probably play once or twice and then leave alone. I guess I'll still be playing Ziggy Stardust. ;)
makesevenupyours @ Aug 21st 2007 5:17PM
I LOVE THE KILLERS!
i had both their albums for a while and hadnt really listened to them until a few months ago and now they are one of my favorite bands.
Phoenix @ Aug 21st 2007 6:26PM
The Killers does sound a bit random at first, but hey, I love that song, so I can't complain.
Ombre @ Aug 21st 2007 7:57PM
Another interesting tidbit on that boxart is that when it discusses online play, there's a note that says "Online play is only available on the PLAYSTATION 3, XBOX 360, and Wii platforms" or something like that. So online just might be in for the Wii version.
Probot @ Aug 22nd 2007 2:07AM
That's been confirmed for a while.
"He also confirmed that Guitar Hero III on Wii contains features included in other versions of the upcoming game - such as online play and downloadable music."

kmo @ Aug 21st 2007 10:09PM
fuckin afi and the killers, this game is turning into emo hero 3, lucky its got metallica to save it.
Heh @ Aug 21st 2007 11:32PM
@kmo-You should mention Slayer being on the set list before Metallica. Because, well, we all know what happened (that being, Metallica took the money and Slayer took the eternal glory). ;D
Lemm @ Aug 22nd 2007 1:03AM
unless of course it's the original version by Fleetwood Mac...
Sean @ Aug 22nd 2007 10:43AM
Looks like Black Magic Wookie to me.
