Erm, so how does it handle full screen for those of us people still living in the standard-definition age?

For full screen, you get everything.

BioShock on the PC crashes for me everytime it gets past the logo. :(

That's why if anything I would get it for the 360.

Well, now I'm pissed.

I just got back from the store with Bioshock. So how is it that the demo works demonstratively well with my HD tv, but my full version of the game probably wont? More on this story after I test it.

Someone on another forum posted that Gears of War handles widescreen excactly the same way. Perhaps it has to do with the Unreal Engine?

Perhaps they felt a wider field of view would have diminished the feel of the game.

This report is for the PC version isn't it?

I have both demos and can report that the 360 version is pretty much on a par in quality as the PC version.

If it were the unreal engine that would be funn since Too Human was delayed do to issues with support from Epic becuase of it. I hate it when developers all use the same engine. Everything starts to look the same etc .....

"Perhaps they felt a wider field of view would have diminished the feel of the game."

Exactly what I was thinking. There was a lot of work put into this game both from an art/architecture and directorial standpoint. I wouldn't be surprised if they decided a wider screen would be a detriment to the world/presentation they created, or that developing the game with a wider screen in mind would seriously hinder the experience of 4:3 gamers. Instead, they gave everyone the same horizontal range.

We already know that they once confirmed widescreen in the past, so it certainly doesn't seem as if it was overlooked. I would wager it was a design decision.

Regardless, I play with an HD television and am normally quite anal about seeing things as the developer intended. In this case, I have to imagine that they developed the game wide-screen and simply decided to give SD users a bit more at the top and bottom instead of cutting off the horizontal frame of the world.

I just popped it in. Time for part two of my crises evaluation. Everything looks fine! I got up through the bathysphere and everything looks just as it did in the demo. So far my assessment is that if you played through the demo without problems, the same will most likely be said about the real deal.

Isn't everyone getting just a LITTLE too worked up about the cropping issue? I mean, is it unfortunate? Kind of, I guess, but for me (and my 16:9 high-def display) it sure as heck ISN'T a deal breaker.

By reports: Gears of War had this same issue, and nobody noticed. Now a bunch of people that that most likely wouldn't have noticed it in Bioshock had they NOT read it here are raising a big stink about it. WHO CARES?

Judging by the Metacritic review scores, it has just about ZERO impact on the game. I for one, can't wait to get the heck out of work so I can pick up my copy and play it all night. Anyone who doesn't do the same just because of some cropping issues is, at least in my estimation, a total fool.

To the point about visual presentation using 4x3, WTF. If I can't see my health meter then that is not artisic, thats crap. Whether your a 4x3 or 16x9 user, you should expect the same quality regardless of a lazy excuse as artisic direction or feel.

Yes, if this is really a problem why don't we have a screenshot from a widescreen display, or a photo of a widescreen TV with the health info cut off?

Also, why do I still have to click add my comments, open my e-mail then click the link to confirm my comments? This is 2007. Get real. Get an account system.

@17,

I think a lot of this is the people who have wide screen setups, and have the new game today... before work is out. First, you have the haters, who will look for any reason to bash MS and the 360 by proxy... On this one, I think you have to add in the rich kid effect, they are upset that they have less detail on screen than the proles or something like that. Finally, and IMO, the smallest group are the wide screen purists.

They have come together in the perfect storm and harnessing the power of these three groups of constant whiners and complainers, magnified the Internet, and we all have to once again listen to them complain that the teacher gave them demerits for being late to class.

Take a step back... No really, take a step back, there, that is what it was supposed to look like. OMG noobs.

@#16 I have both didn't really care for Gears, and I know they are different, but the issue will come up as more people use the engine there is over lap of the feel and look of some games. Bioshock modified the engine as most will do too so it won't look exactly the same.

Ok, I have a wide-screen setup. But a friend has a 4x3 setup. Now, when he plays Gears, (or I play over there) there is something missing. It's important to with a game like that. (At least IMO) Seeing the sides of you is real important in any FPS, the more you see the better you plan or react. So, If BioShock does clip off the top and bottom, who cares? It actually allows everyone to see everything on screen! In the game you hear things coming at you, so you look in that direction putting the focus there. If someone is on the sides, they are hiding, and usually you won't hear anything until you are being attacked. Thus, this clipping method is actually better allowing everyone to experience the same amount on screen and fill the screen as well. The other option is to force a widesczreen output, and most people don't want that making this a preferred option.

The idea is not that the HUD is cut off. The idea is that instead of adding visuals to the left and right sides of the screen in the margins created by the widescreen tv, the top and bottom of the normal resolution screens are cut off. The result is that instead of seeing more of the enviroment on a widescreen, you see less.

People on this forum are so dumb. The top and bottom of the image of the 4:3 resolution are cropped to create the 16:9 resolution.

You don't see the health or anything chopped off because it is moved to compensate the crop. It's not rocket science.

Apparently the team are looking into the issue and hopefully a patch will be rolled out.

P.S.

I have played the demo on both 360 and PC and checked 16:9 and 4:3 resolution respectively and can confirm it is cropped in widescreen, so you are losing around 25% of the image!

This is lame in 2007. It needs to be sorted!

I've been playing and its true. Its a 4:3 thats been cut (the health bars are re-drawn higher on screen).

It definitely detracts from gameplay, but not a lot.

Unlike movies (which are shot (rendered) at a set resolution) games are rendered in realtime (resolution independent). So even though the game is being rendered as 4:3 it could have been easily framed with 16:9 in mind. So technically yes its a 16:9 "chunk" out of a 4:3 space but since its rendered in real time there would be no loss of resolution and the space above and below the 16:9 could be the filler (or dead space).
http://img520.imageshack.us/img520/802/letterboxza6.jpg
I would expect this would be the easiest way to accommodate both aspect ratios (from a developers point of view). This saves them the trouble of framing every scene for two ratios.
