Too Human trilogy may conclude on next next-gen console
Silicon Knights president Denis Dyack was just keeping it real when he confessed to IGN that the Too Human trilogy might drag on past the Xbox 360's life cycle. Ya think? The ongoing legal drama with Epic is just the latest hiccup in what's close to a decade-long project. (Silicon Knights began development in 1999 and first previewed Too Human, originally a 5-disc PlayStation game, at E3 in 2000.) But if Dyack's prediction comes true, if there is only one 'next next-gen' console, then at least future Too Human sequels will not be slowed by platform transitions.Dyack's newest estimate for the release of the first game is now "early 2008," curtailing total development time to the 9-year mark and improving the forecast from last week's more broadly cited date of "2008." The first truly playable version of Too Human will apparently be shown to media outlets as early as October.

so is this the new Duke Nukem Forever?
Sloar @ Aug 21st 2007 4:43PM
Actually, the final boss of this game is Duke Nukem. It's going to be awesome!
mr nimblewick @ Aug 21st 2007 4:51PM
Isn't Duke Nukem Forever STILL Duke Nukem Forever? Nothing has changed there.
GRANTED @ Aug 21st 2007 4:37PM
hahahahahahahhhahaaha
let's just get back to finishing that first one, eh
Kris @ Aug 21st 2007 4:40PM
Too Human = Duke Nukem: Forever
T-bone and Razor @ Aug 21st 2007 4:41PM
Okay: processing snappy remarks... process complete
"Too Human 3: THE game to buy in 2026!"
"Too Human 2 was originally unveiled for the Xbox 360, then changed to the PlayStation 4, only to be finally unvieled as a launch title for Wii 3"
Rare Hare @ Aug 21st 2007 10:43PM
Actually, creid, to say something like "could care less" when one literally means "couldn't care less", however grammatically frustrating it may be, is still correct. So let's stop the moronic nitpicking, OK?
Rare Hare @ Aug 21st 2007 10:44PM
DAMMIT that was in response to the wrong thing.
Diskoboy @ Aug 21st 2007 4:41PM
I think I'm the only person on the face of this p[lanr who could give "Too shits" about this game.
(and before you smartasses comment saying I don't know how to spell 'two', that's called a pun. A play on words....)
Rare Hare @ Aug 21st 2007 4:48PM
OK, but I don't get it.
Mr Intel @ Aug 21st 2007 4:49PM
you cant spell 2
oh wait.....
JL @ Aug 21st 2007 5:10PM
I voted you down because you seem like an asshole ;D
creid @ Aug 21st 2007 5:16PM
Smartass comments about the spelling of "planet" are still allowed, though, right? Or that the phrase is "couldn't give," not "could give?" If you could give, then you care about it. And you probably don't care about it.
JL @ Aug 21st 2007 5:17PM
Eloquent response Creid

I've only gained interest in this game over the past year and a half or so. Now I'm rapidly losing it.
dvdguy @ Aug 21st 2007 4:52PM
Five discs on the PS1? But more discs is a bad thing, right Sony?
bendak @ Aug 21st 2007 4:55PM
Get your facts straight Joystiq. The game has not been in development since 1999. From 2000-2004 they were working on Eternal Darkness and Metal gear...Too Human didnt start until they got the first 360 development kits. It's been in development for 3 years.
Ludwig Kietzmann @ Aug 21st 2007 5:21PM
Well, that certainly makes this a very forward-thinking preview: http://psx.ign.com/articles/131/131627p1.html
Dale @ Aug 21st 2007 5:23PM
They showed it on PSone at E3 in 1999, then a teaser trailer of a GameCube version at Spaceworld 2000.
Joystiq do have their facts straight. Developers can and do work on more than one title at once.

Best photo edit ever.

Now, just one question, how come ign says October 26 for the European release date? Is that them just being lazy and not updating, or what? Cos if they have a truly playable version by october, and the european release date is supposed to be october...that seems to suggest something to me....
T-bone and Razor @ Aug 21st 2007 5:20PM
I would err on them not updating, you would KNOW about a release date, Silicon Knights probably knows that their game is being talked about like its vaporware, and if they released a date, they would want to trumpet it to the hills
and the game DOES look intriguing, its just fun to poke fun at it
rinks @ Aug 21st 2007 5:21PM
This demo footage looked really promising. But this lawsuit over the Unreal 3 engine not delivering? Yeah, I guess that's why the Bioshock, Rainbow 6, and Mass Effect teams had so much trouble with it. Oh, wait.
Jake @ Aug 21st 2007 5:28PM
The history of Too Human has nothing to do with its chance of coming out. Sure, it was "in development" already three previous times. But it has never been running on a game engine and mostly built the way it is today. It is far further along than Duke Forever ever got and it is much further along than these previous attempts ever were.
The lawsuit is troubling, though. Hopefully they can get the game out.
AlanRickman @ Aug 21st 2007 5:41PM
Cant we just say "next-gen?"
JL @ Aug 21st 2007 5:45PM
Absolutely not. We can call next next gen, next gen when the machines release. Personally, I cant wait for next next next gen!
AlanRickman @ Aug 21st 2007 5:55PM
Absolutely silly, since Joystiq themselves declared "next-gen" dead.
http://www.joystiq.com/2006/12/05/so-long-next-gen-and-good-riddance/
Lo and behold, by this very writer!
BWAHAHAHAHAH!
T-bone and Razor @ Aug 21st 2007 6:01PM
The problem is we're still stuck calling what we have now "next-gen" when the appropriate term would be "modern"
The odd thing is that its the people who actually own the modern consoles who seem most bent out of shape about using the term "next-gen" like it was going out of style
hvnlysoldr @ Aug 21st 2007 6:03PM
It's all a marketing ploy. They just can't see the brilliance behind the Hyper Scan which is also a part of the 7th generation along with Wii PS3 and Xbox 360.
JL @ Aug 21st 2007 6:05PM
Hyperscan is teh punnage!
AlanRickman @ Aug 21st 2007 6:53PM
So...is the much overused buzzword "next-gen" dead around here or not?
T-bone and Razor @ Aug 21st 2007 7:15PM
Shortest possible answer: No
Mark @ Aug 21st 2007 6:16PM
I don't know what to think at this point with this game. Although Denis Dyack does seem insane, the premise of this game sounds very promising and I've been looking forward to it since the EGM cover story. Let's just hope this news is true!
KiraXD @ Aug 21st 2007 6:18PM
does anyone actually care about this game anymore? did you all see that terrible E3 video... looked like shit.
Neutrino64 @ Aug 21st 2007 6:44PM
so...we're never getting an eternal darkness sequel? shucks
Obie @ Aug 21st 2007 7:04PM
Sorry all interest in this game evaporated....3 years ago.
hvnlysoldr @ Aug 21st 2007 7:57PM
Is that why they call it vaporware?
TheWarden @ Aug 21st 2007 9:52PM
Sequels? Pffftt.
Game developers should not worry about sequels if you can't get the first one out in three or four years, plus they should wait to see if... you know, the first one is any good.
What is this, the movie industry? (Halloween, The Santa Claus, etc.)
Word of the street. @ Aug 21st 2007 10:06PM
Told ya,Vaporware.
I wonder what are they going to say in the 2008,that the x360/PS3 and PC doesnt have the power to run Too human? or are they going to blame someone, probably Silicon knights hope people forget about too human for good.
NintendoFanbot @ Aug 21st 2007 10:16PM
Can't wait for the future post that has them blaming Unreal 5 for the lack of progress.
I don't like Epic either but that was low.
Rare Hare @ Aug 21st 2007 11:20PM
I really don't know that I'd classify Too Human as vaporware. We've seen it in playable forms, and know a lot about the game. This isn't something that's little more than a name to the public. Such as, oh.. I don't know.. DUKE NUKEM FOREVER.
But still. I wouldn't be surprised if they eventually announced the cancellation of Too Human all together.
samfish @ Aug 22nd 2007 1:38AM
So do we think this'll come out before Sadness, though?
Harbl @ Aug 22nd 2007 2:06AM
This smells like Advent Rising to me.
Is Dennis going to promise 1 million dollars to one lucky buyer?
Trapper02 @ Aug 22nd 2007 9:47AM
Ho! Ho! ho!
Nicholas @ Aug 22nd 2007 10:54PM
Well if the second one goes out on the 360 and then the third one on the next console, I don't see what's the problem. Many other franchise did the same thing. MGS 1 was on PS1 and the second and third on the PS2 for example. And no, I'm not comparing MGS and Too Human.
