Don't move! Hacked Mario World levels play themselves
When we first saw the video of a hacked Super Mario World level that could be completed without touching the controller, we figured it was a fluke -- the fevered creation of a singular obsessed mind, never to be duplicated. We were wrong.
A bit of digging has turned up at least ten more examples of inevitable Mario movement, collected together below. Like the best Rube Goldberg devices, these videos stand as a mesmerizing testament to careful design and meticulous planning. We sit in awe.

Damn that's a lot of videos
People do some good work. This is why user-generated levels automatically makes any game awesome
T-bone and Razor @ Aug 22nd 2007 7:55PM
In the third video, it says "sadamasashi," "sadamasa" or "sadamasan" at about 2:32 on the clock, written in the rails, i can't tell if the last character is the hiragana "n" "shi" or just part of the system and nothing at all
anyone make anything of that?
hvnlysoldr @ Aug 22nd 2007 8:40PM
It's a sly smiling face.
Joshua @ Aug 22nd 2007 9:31PM
It's definitely "sadamasashi". Must be a name or a nickname or username or something.
Lockgar @ Aug 22nd 2007 7:08PM
The game plays with itself?
Yes, the game is masterbating.
flameofdoom666 @ Aug 22nd 2007 7:47PM

Greatist Post Evar!
SoulJah @ Aug 22nd 2007 8:56PM
PennyArcade did it first.
Dither @ Aug 22nd 2007 7:16PM
The fourth one from the top seemed like it was following the music. That's amazing, I think.
Xanto @ Aug 22nd 2007 7:54PM
Yeah the part 38 seconds in really does go with the music
Stupidiot @ Aug 22nd 2007 7:24PM
Completely off topic, but where the hell did that image gallery for a sidewinder mouse come from? Do Joystiq galleries just randomly materilize without accompanying articles or what?
hvnlysoldr @ Aug 22nd 2007 7:26PM
yes
Randy @ Aug 23rd 2007 2:33PM
Yeah. They must not have included a post to go with it...

If Rube Goldberg were alive he'd build a machine to laugh for him.
Anorhc @ Aug 22nd 2007 7:36PM
I must have the rom patch for this. It actually looks very entertaining to play... or not play.
hvnlysoldr @ Aug 22nd 2007 7:51PM
Make sure to wear an eye patch me heatie.
takun @ Aug 22nd 2007 7:36PM
The end part of the third video wins.
blooh @ Aug 22nd 2007 7:53PM
i saw a couple spots in the first one where the guy tapped a directional button just to get mario moving again
still pretty intersting though. i wonder if the original testers ever did this
bm @ Aug 23rd 2007 7:02AM
I'm sure that's what you thought you saw.
You're wrong.
soupbase @ Aug 22nd 2007 7:58PM
So how exactly would he go down a pipe without touching the controller eh?
warioswoods @ Aug 23rd 2007 9:35AM
After closer inspection, in the first video there is a change that happens when he hits the information block, just before going down the pipe to fight Big Boo. I can't read Japanese, but if you look closely you can clearly infer that the information box is telling him to hold three buttons, which seem to be run, jump, and down; he holds these through the remainder of the video. This explains the fact that he slides down all the slopes, goes into pipes immediately, bounces higher off the note blocks, and holds the koopa shells rather than kicking them.
Anyone play the eReader SMA4 levels, especially the Japanese ones? They use the combined elements, sprites, powerups, etc. from Mario 2, 3, and World; if only Nintendo would release a WiiWare title that was a Mario level editor with all of that available to the player, combined with an upload system whereby everyone could put their levels online and browse through those made by others, it would be a huge hit. Imagine the automations that would be created, and without any hacking skills required. Then again, that's not going to happen. :(
Patrick_S @ Aug 22nd 2007 8:28PM
I thought a hacked ROM involved using and changing the existing resources of the game. Then where did that elevator from the first video come from? That certainly wasn't in the original game. Is it an unused image he found in the rom?
Sonicandtails @ Aug 22nd 2007 8:59PM
Well for starters, you can take up ASM and such and insert various sprites and functions yourself. There are people who have put in the blocks that break ala SMB3, people have put in Bloopers with functions ala SMB, people have replaced the entire soundtrack with
Earthworm Jim, SMRPG, and other things. You can do alot more then one would think with enough knowledge.I'm from a Super Mario World hacking community, and I've even seen Chargin' Chucks with HP Counters and used as bosses. The elevators in that movie you speak of are in the original game, just not used more then a few times.
HyperHacker @ Aug 25th 2007 11:43PM
Heck, those booster and Mario/Luigi switch blocks in #4? I programmed those. :D
Donald @ Aug 22nd 2007 9:40PM
After watching those videos in sequence, I have to wonder if the creator had a traumatic childhood experience involving not hitting a button fast enough. This experiment is his revenge.
"Oh yeah? You want to make me press buttons? Well FUCK YOU!! I'll create a game that plays itself!"
J-Guy @ Aug 22nd 2007 10:08PM
Awesome. Although, in the second video, there were instances were normally Mario would have died (I'm thinking of the ghosts holding the blue flames).
Sonicandtails @ Aug 23rd 2007 3:22AM
Wrong, Marios hitboxes are shorter then his head. Someone needs to hack Super Mario World more!
Maxine @ Aug 22nd 2007 11:01PM
Eh, my favorite is still the Chicken Bridge one. Anyone can make a level that plays itself - but a level that is lethal when played, that's a special kind of evil. http://youtube.com/watch?v=SHd6ZAnSuuM

Hey cool. I posted this in my Destructoid community blog about a week ago. Then the story hit the front page of Digg on Monday afternoon. It hit Dtoid's front page Monday night.
Glad to see I/we are such a huge and ubiquitous gaming news source that you just ASSUME everyone comes to us first. Keep up the good work and one day you might be a well respected blog run by honest people too!

Hey cool, there was one of these posted back here in June.

Some of the level names are pretty interesting. In the first video, the name of the stage is Luigi's Grave.
jesus_bon_jovi @ Aug 23rd 2007 11:32AM
NOTHING IS RANDOM!
Grant @ Aug 23rd 2007 5:58PM
i wonder why these people have such a hard time syncing the audio in their youtube videos when they clearly show technical skill in making the mario levels.
bd_ @ Aug 24th 2007 9:09PM
These videos were originally uploaded to nicovideo, which has a different encoding procedure (for maximum quality, you can encode your video using VP6 yourself, then upload it and have them serve it unmodified). When reuploaded by someone else to youtube, the a-v sync is often lost (a lot of backend media player stuff has flaky FLV decoding, and youtube's going to insist on re-encoding it to VP1...)
bd_ @ Aug 23rd 2007 7:15PM
Many of these videos originate from niconico douga (nicovideo.jp). Over there, さだまさし (sadamasashi) is a meme - a particular part of the BGM (played at that part of the video) sounds kinda like さだまさし if you listen /just/ right, and so people flood it in the scrolling on-screen comments at the appropriate time.
You may see でっていう (detteiu) as well, referring to the sound yoshi makes when you land on him.
bd_ @ Aug 23rd 2007 7:18PM
If you thought that was bad, here's what happens when someone, none the wiser, tries to play one of these levels: http://etc.uguu.us/video/jidou_furi ( automatic play version: http://etc.uguu.us/video/zenjidou_kichiku_5 - original niconico douga link: http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm891777 )
Doug @ Aug 24th 2007 4:53PM
That was hilarious! Whoever is playing in that video is a true Super Mario World hero -- I couldn't believe he actually bested that level!
HyperHacker @ Aug 25th 2007 11:43PM
Fail. He edited the level. Notice the added warp in the bonus room, the lack of fire coming from the statues, and the change at the very end.
bd_ @ Aug 26th 2007 7:29PM
Yes, the original video description noted those (in Japanese) - though it's apparently still a self-playing level if you let it...
Roshan @ Sep 10th 2007 10:57AM
The task must have been incredibly painstaking.
bosox24445 @ Sep 11th 2007 10:26PM
what is the name of this game...super mario world the japanese version?? i am very interested in buying this game but i do not know the title so for now i am out of luck....anyone know the name????
Under 9000 @ Oct 19th 2007 3:32PM
Heh, one second left on #3, and then the Yoshi egg says "FUCK YOU".
