DualShock 3 will be compatible with Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, allegedly reports Japanese publication Dengeki PlayStation. The sparse detail was provided by a NeoGAF poster (sans scan) rounding up the magazine's news and has fueled speculation that the gamepad silhouette featured on the official GT5 website (pictured above) is actually a DualShock 3, rather than the assumed SixAxis. With Prologue scheduled for October (in Japan), the next logical assumption is that DualShock 3 will launch alongside the dressed up demo. But these are uninformed guesses, folks. Let hearsay be hearsay until Sony speaks up ... maybe right now in Leipzig. (But probably not until TGS.)

anyway, why should we be excited for something that should have been there from the start? Why play this up like its some next step in gaming?

I agree - this shouldn't be news. There should be no anticipation for a rumbling Sixaxis. As commenter Jake says lower down, Sony can't possibly have the nerve to re-release this ageing design again. Why not take this opportunity to finally redesign their controller - it doesn't have to be vastly different, just make some sensible changes that reflect the current gaming trend requirements - an analogue under your thumb without having to stretch or shift your grip.

PLEASE don't name it "DualShock 3" Sony.... I beg of you.... that was an awful name to me.
I would rather SixSense.
Does anyone know if the magazine specifically named if DS3 and was quoting an official name?

Huh, that's actually a pretty good name. Good work.
Now, if they just would manage to switch the left analog and d-pad, we'd be in business!

Look like sony hasn't taken the time to fix the analog stick placement. Or the bumpers. Or the led.The shape looks a bit different though. here's hoping they have discovered a little somehting called ergonimics.

That'll never happen my friend.
I think that would be a submission that the 360 controller is superior to the SIXAXIS. I doubt Sony would ever do that.
Their both fine controllers in my opinion.

@ FrankTheCrank: Sony had no problem admitting that the motion-sensing in the Nintendo Wii Remote was a good idea when they hurriedly added it to their PS3 controller. If they 'submitted' then, why don't they submit to the 360 analogue/d-pad placement design being superior too?

I don't think that's accurate, andrew... Patent filings show the sixaxis motion-sensing to be "in the plans" far earlier than just being "added on" after the Wii announcement.

Bring on the ucking games already...
And throw in Xvid support...
also, that PSN store needs to be revamped big time...it's point and click ala 1998. Give something like that Dirt interface, which is slick as grease.

Know matter what they call it, it stills sucks because of the D-pad and analog stick. My biggest reason not to buy.

I really like the PS3 hardware overall but the controller sucks ass, imo. Rename it the suxaxis, discontinue it, and release something with rumble, some weight, triggers, and a d-pad/analog placement that favors the one you use 99% of the time.
Is there a hack or mod that would allow me to use my 360 controller on PS3 games? That would make a PS3 purchase seem more tempting.

This is using NeoGAF as a source, so I'd take this with a grain... no, a shaker of salt. SponG has more credibility, for christsakes...

I disagree. I own all 3 next-gen consoles, and the sixaxis, in my opinion, is the worst. The analog sticks are mushy, and the d-pad makes your fingers blister after extended play. The 360 has by far the best analog sticks and butttons. But the D-pad is terrible. I actually think the Wii Classic Controller has the best d-pad out of all of them.. reminds me of the old SNES controller, and that makes me happy.
Anyway, I still hate the SixAxis controller. And rumble definitely needs to come back...
Until Sony sorts all of this out, the PS3 will remain my dedicated blu-ray player.. and i'll be playing bioshock in the meantime :P
Anyway..

The original DualShock launched with GT1, so this sounds very plausible. No rumble in GT5 means no sale, I'm sorry. Playing GTHD without rumble made the game feel like shit compared to Forza 2.

The dpad/analog placement really matters to you guys? How can your gaming experience be contingent on 1 inch? I have played both PS3 and 360 extensively and can honestly say it never even occurred to me.

It's not the inch itself which is bothersome, it's the position the thumb has to adopt.
To make my point clearer, on a 360 controller your thumb is pointing upwards. On a PS3 controller, your thumb is pointing towards the side. That makes a difference when you're pointing the stick/nub in the desired direction to move your character/reticule/etc... and there's also a notion of comfort.
I think it's more of a question of habit. Personally, I can't use analog nubs.

Bend your elbows at a 90% angle. Hold your hands in front of you. Position your fingers in a vertical allignment from index finger to pinky. Now look at where your thumbs are positioned. They should be pointing inwards at an aproximate 45% angle.
Where are the ShockAxis analog joysticks positioned? Answer, right where your thumbs naturally sit when you hold your hands in front of you.
Sony has created the most erganomically correct controller that has seen no need to change since the days of the PS1.
I am glad they are keeping the analog sticks right where they are.

Interesting. I still prefer the left stick to be in the primary position... though unlike some of the whiners here I don't hinge any purchases on that difference. The controller functions fine. I'd actually prefer they tighten the sticks and change the trigger shape before swapping the left stick. People just make a bigger deal than necessary because it's Sony.

@Zaphod: Exactly why they designed it the way they did and exactly why they haven't changed that core design.
@samfish: Wrong. The overwhelming consensus of xbots posting in the echo-chamber called joystiq comment boards agree on that and everyone else doesn't care.
The least you guys could do is hate on the PS3 for reasons that actually matter like, oh, I don't know, the dearth (real or perceived) of quality games.

We know from developers that the rumble Sixaxis is coming because they actually have them in their hands. It's nothing new for Sony to release a redesign of their controller in the middle of a system life cycle. Remember the first DualShock? None too pleased myself as I already have two Sixaxis' myself and I don't want to shell out 60 more clams for a feature that should have been there from the start.
