As expected, Sony just announced PlayTV, a combined TV tuner and PVR (think TiVo) for the PlayStation 3.
But we already knew that, you want to know the details! PlayTV has two high definition tuners allowing you to watch one channel while recording another all in 1080p. It uses the European Digital Video Broadcasting – Terrestrial (DVB-T) format meaning a US release isn't possible in this configuration. You can store shows on your PS3 or transcode and transfer them to your PSP for viewing on the go and, speaking of PSP, you can use the handheld's Remote Play feature to program or watch your PlayTV while away from home. They promise the interface and guide will of course be beautiful and lightning fast, but until we can try it out for ourselves you'll just have to take their word for it.
Just in case it's not the be all and end all of set-top boxes, Sony says, "PlayTV will evolve with time, with great added value functionality being updated via PlayStation Network; a feature that sets it above all other set top boxes. PlayTV will never be out of date." ... At least not for Europeans. PlayTV will hit Europe "early in 2008" with other PAL territories to follow. We've asked SCEA to comment on a North American version.

I really really really really really really really could use something like this in North America, that at least supports NTSC, but also supports unscrambled QAM and even ATSC. Seriously, I don't have any kind of DVR or PVR that I can use without leaving a computer on, which is not ideal over vacations. I'm really tired of using tired old VHS tapes that are tired.
I could really use this with my PS3!

See, now this is what MS needs to be doing with the Media Center/360/Zune. Hopefully, this'll light a fire under their asses.

"If you have a vista/MCE2005 PC, and an ATSC tuner, you can get digital TV on your 360, and record/playback TV from it". And how ludicrously cumbersome and over the top is that set-up? Anyway, the PS3 supports streaming so the chances are that you could watch TV on the PS3 in the same way if you felt like it.
But it's a stupid setup that would never catch on. There should be no need at any point to have a PC turned on, or streaming data in order to watch content on a device which is right beside your TV and capable of doing it for itself. Sure the PS3 / 360 should offer streaming they are both more than capable of content playback all by themselves. This is why Apple's iTV is so dumb since it requires a PC in order to use the iTV. You'd think Apple would have sense realise what a bad setup this is but apparently not.

Except I can buy a 500 gb SATA2 drive for my PC for alot cheaper than the same drive for the PS3 (PS3 needs 2.5" drives). And, I could add another drive of equal size if I wanted to. How many HD can a PS3 have? Does anybody know what the max size HD the PS3 will recognize?
And for the tech guru, why wouldn't this setup be attractive. If you're streaming stuff the the 360 already (just like you can stream stuff to the PS3), why not hook up this setup? There's nothing cumbersome about it. And you can get the same experience for less than the cost of just the PS3.

As an owner of both a media center PC (wish you had one :P) and a Xbox 360, I don't see why this PlayTV for the PS3 is a big deal when I can do all that DVR stuff RIGHT NOW.
And as for the anti-christian (which's icon I'm offended at), please name me one big game on the PS3 right now that's setting the world on fire.

I really don't see what the problem is. I for one am pretty excited about this announcement. Albeit, I don't own a PS3, but I will take any extra functionality I can get...
I think much of this argument stems from single-use/multi-use devices. As in, for the most part, single-use devices do what the are built for very well (i.e. Tivo, Wii (jokes)) While multi-use devices do a plethora of things, but never to the same caliber as the single-use devices. Here we see the ps3 expanding itself into a multi-use device and people are apprehensive or don't see a need for these additional functions. It's understandable.
And I think the reason why the 360 didn't get as much crap was because it already had a relatively established game library before hand. Whereas the ps3 has RFOM.

As a tech guy that works for a cable company trust me a 1tb hard drive on my PC and maybe a second one on usb 2.0 with Vista Media center with a digital dual tuner with two cable cards would be the best way to go. To bad as of yet we dont have PC tuners with cable cards yet. But as of a few days ago where I work at, we just receive the new Two Way Cable Cards. (for some of you, the first gen of cable cards where 1 way cards) Now I wish they can make a PC Tv tuner with two cable card slots and good bye to my poor 160gb Motorola box or good bye to those lousy 80gb Moxi boxes or 160gb SA boxes some of you may use. And as for this thread a PS3 with 60 or 80gb drive is Useless for DVR they are like ummm maybe 4 years behind. Even a xbox elite with 120gb drive is Kinda useless also. If a 250gb gen 3 dual tuner (dual cable card) Tivo can only do 25 hours of HD, you can already imagine what a 80 or 120gb will do.

Seeing as the PS3 has failed as a games console, they now have to turn it into a media PC. It would be worth buying one of these now however, because it makes a good media center PC, at a reasonable price (for a PC). For games, I'm sticking to my 360 though.
Posted: Aug 23rd 2007 10:39AM (Unverified) said
How can you say it's failed as a games machine ? There may not be hundreds of games out yet but IT'S A NEW MACHINE ! Tell me one machine that had a decent library shortly after it's launch.
A general comment not specifically to Thomas (can I call you Thomas ?)
The PS3 was always marketed as more than a games machine anyway so why is it so bad that they are extending its functionality ?
I really don't get some people or the fanboy mentality. In fact it's pretty dumb. If you don't like something then don't buy it. If you like something, buy it. The power of being a consumer is wonderful isn't it ? If you think PlayTV will be crap don't buy it. Just stop complaining like little kids.
I for one like the idea. I can set it up in the UK at my parents house and from Germany (where I live) I can watch English TV on my PSP or hook the PSP up to the TV and watch it on that. Sounds great to me. All that is missing is the ability to remotely activate / switch on the PS3 from the PSP so I don't have to leave the PS3 on remote play 24/7. I'm hoping this will come soon enough with a firmware update. With the remote PSP functionality they can't expect people to leave the PS3 on all time.

Dual tuners would allow you to record two shows at once, but here's where it gets tricky.... How do you get premium channel integration without cable card or a set-top box to do the decoding of the encrypted signals being pushed to your system? That's what I'd like to know.
Seems like Sony is once again ripping off someone else... *cough* IPTV on 360 *cough*
The only difference is that Microsoft has been active in the IPTV community since day 1 (creating the front-ends for quite a few providers systems) and I'm sure they have a creative solution for getting around the premium content issue.
Plus, monthly fees in america will be a given... they don't give cable tv out for free.

As, long as I can connect two of them and record 4 shows at once while watching one of them. That is the functionality you need, along with the multimedia version of the PS3 with 500gb hard drive and an blu-ray burner.
Now, if they could have released stuff like that when the PS3 came out, with Linux, and maybe Blu-ray reader DL DVD burner combo drive, we might have bought it in the first place. They shoot themselves in the foot, too little in order to stretch out demand which eventually went somewhere else.
