"Mr. Thompson appears to be a thoughtful, prosocial and erudite man whose life is anchored, fortified and enriched by his Evangelical Christianity. I find no evidence that his faith distorts, clouds or impairs his personal or professional judgment."

Sounds more like he went to a priest. Either that or this guy's had his palms greased recently.

It'd be faster and more satisfying if someone just swatted him, though.

To be honest, this doesn't surprise me, but that's because I've done something almost nobody else here has done.

I've spoken with Jack Thompson.

In case people forget, do you all remember the interview that was posted where Jack Thompson equated video gaming with masturbation? I was the interviewer. So I've gotten one-on-one speaking time with him (over the phone, before anyone asks what he's like in person).

With that out of the way, my thoughts on Jack are thus - he is perhaps the most blatant self-caricature on the Internet. You know how people might be calm and reasonable in real life, but they become complete lunatics when they go online? People usually attribute it to the anonymity of the Internet. Well, I don't think it can just be that. Jack Thompson does not bother with Internet anonymity, but yet he becomes exponentially more strident and illiberal when he talks to people online (he was even willing to compliment me when we talked over the phone, while he questioned my masculinity in email).

I think the anonymity of his accusers is part of why Jack is so strident online - he can't humanize his opposition in his mind if they're just words on a screen. He's much less prone to being insulting and outrageous in his speech or even his proposals when he's actually talking to someone, in my experience.

Consequently, the fact that he is quite rational in non-Internet communication is why video game journalists pay attention to him. Outside of his posts and emails, he's remarkably collegial and has proven remarkably adept at using this and his prominence as an anti-video game advocate to repeatedly put himself in a position to continue his fight. If we do not, he'll still be just as famous and attempting to do the same things. Only without reportage on the faults of his words and his proposals, they're more likely to succeed.
