LGC07: Metal Gear Solid Press Conference Q&A with Kojima

The Kojima Productions Press conference at Leipzig today ended with a Q&A session between the press and Kojima-san and his cohorts. The following is a summary of the questions and responses and covers Metal Gear Online, Metal Gear Solid 4 plans for the 360 and more.

Will Metal Gear Online be separate from MGS4 or will it be included?

Hard to explain. When you play story mode you will be able to go online and it will have extra stuff at the end.
Haven't decided whether it will be separate or not, but if you buy MGS4 you can play a portion of online at least. The worlds of MGS4 and MGO are very similar and they want consistencies between them. Final discussions haven't been made yet.

Can you say anything about the music?

There may be a special feature where you can play your own music.

Will Metal Gear Solid 4 ever come to 360, like the previous titles as a "subsistence" package?

Right now it's only being made for PS3. No plans for 360 for now.

It seems too easy. Was the demonstration in Easy mode? Can we expect harder AI in the full game?

I'm sorry to say that we set the AI for our producer, Ken, a little too easy in case he had difficulties. In the full game it will be harder. We are still balancing the difficulty.

In Metal Gear Online will other characters be playable? Bosses, maybe? Or just normal soldiers?

Yes, of course we'll have some special characters appear.

Aren't Metal Gear 2 and the Stealth suit too big an advantage for Snake? Does it make the game too easy?

You don't have to worry. We're still adjusting the difficulty. You can't complete the game just using those things, the full game will be much harder. Metal Gear mk. 2 is just a supporting device, so you can't proceed much further with it. Snake has to physically move in order to proceed.

Will the final game support Rumble?

For now, we don't have that feature. We wish we could. Let's see what happens in the future. In Kojima Productions there is a man, we call him The Rumble Guy, and he has nothing to do right now. So every day I worry about him. I want to include Rumble so that he has something to do.

Can you say anything about how weather will affect gameplay mechanics?

We have implemented psychological battles in the game. If you or your enemy are somewhere that is uncomfortable: too hot, too cold etc, then that will affect your gameplay. For example if you are in a hot area then you are tense, but if you eat hot food in that situation then you get a power boost.

What other uses will the SIXAXIS controller take on in the game?

You might need to use the SIXAXIS controller on special occasions throughout the game.

Christ man, just say no. If it is never coming to the 360 then TELL us so we can figure out how to justify buying a console for one game to ourselves. If it is, tell us so we can NOT waste 600 bucks to play one game.

It is very simple: just say "MGS4 will not come to the 360." or "MGS4 will come to the 360 a few months later."

dude you won't believe this.. about 2 months ago there was this crazy thing, sony drop the price of the ps3.. it's now only $499... anyhow.. it's ok..

but you should really try other games, i mean the ps3 is gonna last you quite a few years.. and if you're planning on playing only one game in it that does kinda suck.. but guess what..

this is the best part.. even if it comes out on the 360 you can still play it on the ps3.. isn't that amazing.. anyhow.. just trying to make you feel better bro.. and maybe less of a troll..

And I won't be buying a ps3 until MGS4 comes out, possibly later, by which time the price will have gone back up to 600.Before then I'd have to rebuy the controller anyway.

And I HAVE tried the ps3. A freind has one. But i hate racing games so that takes care of about half of its lineup. I can't stand games made by insomniac, naughty dog so their games aren't an option. And since god of war isn't coming for about a year, that leaves the number of ps3 games I am interested in and can't play a better version of on the 360 at MGS4.

He responded that way because even he has to bow to a higher authority: shareholders.

Mark my word, this will be on the 360 in time for the 2008 holiday season.

i hate FPS games so that takes care of about all of the 360 right? and since i hate bungie games.... halo isnt even an option... (360 has more lame racing games than ps3 fyi) that was the dumbest statement ive heard.

Of the list of ps3's good games out now, the only exclusives are RFOM, VF5, Motorstorm, ridge Racer 7, Sigma. And if we take out VF5 due to the superior 360 version, that makes racing titles about half of the exclusive ps3 lineup for now.

You're a bit incorrect there. You see, what happened was at the end of June the $499 60GB PS3 went bye-bye and was replaced by the $599 80GB PS3. So for the time being, there are still SOME $499 PS3 consoles knocking around in America, but by the time MGS4 rolls around next year, those magically priced consoles will all be gone and you'll be stuck with the only option of the $599 80GB PS3 console.

So, in reality it wasn't a price drop, just, as some people say; a 'clearance sale'.

actually i have both consoles because i like games on both platforms... im just pointing out how stupid it makes you sound by pissing on about the crap games on one single console, and pointing out your inaccuracies about racing games.

Him not saying no is making me think that at one point this game will make its way over to the 360.

From the way the question was phrased, it'd be difficult to say 'no,' even if that was the answer.

It's very easy to say "NO" -- Gears of War will NOT be on a PS3; nor will HALO; nor will BioShock ("Xbox360 and Windows only!")

Similarly, we know of certain PS3 exclusives that will NOT make their way to the 360 (Killzone, Warhawk, Lair).

See, it's really quite easy to completely disclaim a port.

That being said, I am no fanboy -- I would be delighted if all games were on all systems.

If this is coming to 360 it wont be ported by kojima, he refuses to port his games to other consoles. He will just do that same thing as for old mgs games where it was handed to other developers to port, which wouldn't be good for the 360 version because i guarantee who ever ports it will screw it up. but no matter i have both system, but i wrater buy it for the system it was designed for Halo 3 and Mass Effect will keep my 360 going until the unfortunate day when i'll be on the phone asking for a coffin.

Bingo. i've always maintained that MGS4 being ported was a bigger possibility than other may think. Not a sure thing, but not a pipe dream either.

Much of this stemmed from the seeming outright refusal to actually confirm that the game would never be out on the 360. Most other devs are quite clear about what systems their game is for and this kind of 'only for this system right now' reeks of the talk used by ubisoft for Haze.

I know that it is up to Konami, not kojima to decide where the game goes, but when even he outright refuses to deny a 360 version...it makes me think there is a reason.

"Right now it's only being made for PS3" That's your denial for a 360 version currently in production.

"No plans for 360 for now" That's your wiggle room for the possibility of the 'expanded' version hitting both PS3 and 360 in 12/18 months.

Keep this in mind though, MGS2:S made it over to Xbox but both MGS3 releases did not.

I know as a fan of the series that I won't be waiting around for a year plus to see the end of Solid Snake.

I don't know maybe it is me, but is a port of this game to the 360 really that big of a deal? The 360 has a ton of games over the PS3 if MGS4 can turn the tide from Xbox360 to PS3 over night then there are a lot bigger concerns MS would have to consider than just one game.

Why ask for the same offerings another system is anticipating why not ask for something new and even more innovative rather than hounding this man down for something he wants on the PS3. The ability to get better games than MGS4 is what xbox360 fans should be worrying about, not the ports of their competitor.

Personally I don't want MGS4 to 360 for the purpose of taking it from PS3. I want it because I love the series and have a 360... Don't feel like spending 600 dollars on a system for one game.

They're waiting to deny the 360 version until MGS4 has shipped in order to bolster PS3 sales at that time, make the impact MGS4 will have on sales even more apparent and stroke Kojima's enormous ego. He loves that.

I still don't understand why people are still excited about stealth games. I thought people got sick of this genre and it was all but dead.

The genre was stillborn for me. I really have no interest to pretend to be a statue. That has no entertainment value to me.

Its Metal Gear Solid. You don't have this game because of just the solid stealth gameplay. Really it can be a full FPS if you want it to - just not totally built that way.

Really you get it for the frickin insane storyline, over-the-top graphics, stunning orchestrated soundtracks, and the intensity of all the fights. If you've ever played those last moments of MGS3. That like made my heart spasm from beating too fast.

Joystiq you really need to check some of these commentators and see if their IPs link back to MS offices or not, because some of these comments just scream of "MS Xbox Damage Control Department".

Our previous discussion was over. There is no way to get you to understand that not only is there NO precedence for dual cartridge/disc consoles as standard (Sega Saturn didn't do it excluding that one rare, special edition model and the Sega Dreamcast didn't do it) but also that the number of people who still have old cartridges is soooooo small that it isn't worth making weird additions. I'll change my mind when either Sony or Microsoft do it first. I don't care if neither ever used cartridge-based media. They should accept them, no questions.

Warhawk and Heavenly Sword. Ratcet and Clank, then a HUGE influx of games come holiday season.

nice try megaDouche but our original arguement wasnt about how relevant cartridge BC is for this current generation or not. it was about you disagreeing with me when i made the point that Nintendo *should have* included cartridge BC in the GameCube in the past as in 2001, perhaps via a USB 3-in-1 cartridge reader (used with software emulation), and Wii would naturally carry the tradition. dont make me pwn you over this topic over here as well.

he's not gonna 'deny' that it will be ported to 360.. with the production cost for the game Konami would be stupid not too..

Or maybe they don't want to give a definite answer because there is a possibility it will come out for the 360, but it depends on sales and such.

In other words, they don't want to say "No, its PS3 Exclusive" and then have it ported to 360 anyways 12 months later because of bad sales or something.

They are just covering their butts.

There is no plan to port it now, but that doesn't mean it won't be ported. But that doesn't mean one will come for sure either.

Perhaps a better question to ask would have been "Can MGO and MGS4 fit on one blu-ray disc?"

That way, if the separate it we would know that they're just trying to make more money on us.

I do hope they port it so many people dont have to buy a ps3 just to play the one true AAA game they will be offering, and I dont want to hear any talk of Lair or Warhawk or Heavsword, those games are not AAA.

To anyone saying that they don't want to get the PS3 for one game, I don't want to have to get the 360 for Halo 3, but I am going to do it because Halo is a great series. The same should be said of MGS4.

Actually this is how I rate a AAA game. The budget of the game, sales, graphics and overall quality. 360 just has more AAA games. Im not tryin to start flame war or anything I was just giving my opinion since I do plan on buying a PS3. I like Tekken, KZ2 looks decent, MGS4 if it isnt ported, oh and that cute little big planet =)
