LGC07: Spore for consoles ... after PC, DS versions
During a Leipzig GC closed-door demo of Spore, Maxis reaffirmed plans to develop console versions of the ever-evolving sim game, but stressed that current resources were limited to the PC and DS builds. "Not right now, but we see this as a franchise," Maxis exec Patrick Buechener told Eurogamer when asked about console releases, adding, "It just won't be at launch." So when is launch?

dlc3007 @ Aug 24th 2007 11:10AM
hmm... PC with all that implies or DS so I can take it with me. Damn, do I have to buy this twice? That's assuming that they actually release it some day.
mr nimblewick @ Aug 24th 2007 11:11AM
I shall buy on DS.
dvdguy @ Aug 24th 2007 11:16AM
This'll rock when it comes out on my Xbox 1080.
Oreo @ Aug 24th 2007 11:25AM
I think there is a better chance we will be flying in space before this game comes out.
mattydread @ Aug 24th 2007 11:31AM
I didn't even imagine this was in production for consoles too. Now I don't have to get a new PC since I can play this on my 360 AND rack up more 'chievements!

Where were you when that Spore developer delivered the famous two GameCubes duct taped together? That was at the time they announced console versions and the DS and possibly Wii. Which is why almost immediately after he had to amend his statement while glorifying PC.

"well, right now we would like to focus on the easiest platform to program for, followed by the one that will make us the most money, will have the worst graphics, and won't require us to change the point-and-click interface much."
Qitsyoj @ Aug 24th 2007 11:43AM
if that were an actual quote then I'd laugh my ass off.

Or maybe. We wanted to develop for the platforms that most people actually have first, and then move into the niche (console) market.

this seems like a game best for PC and probably good for wii and ds due to their control scheme. Can anyone imagine playing a game like the sims with a controller? No thanks..
GRANTED @ Aug 24th 2007 11:45AM
can anyone imagine playing the sims? no thanks.
Blazur @ Aug 24th 2007 11:50AM
I tried playing the Sims but couldn't stand it. It's bad enough I've gotta do chores IRL, but now I'm supposed to do them for fun? Pshaw...
Neebs @ Aug 24th 2007 12:18PM
Because the real point of the Sims is to get a big bunch of people in a small house, remove the door, and enjoy.
ThornedVenom @ Aug 24th 2007 3:44PM
I've actually played the Sims on my cousin's Xbox a few times: it's not that bad because your cursor is this spot on the ground, made visible if hidden by this vertical beam of light (but of course, PC version is better).
But what made the Xbox's version better was the ability to co-op: sure you had less screen space, but it was worth all the fun.
James @ Aug 24th 2007 12:36PM
DS and PC versions for me, and possibly the Wii since it's a brilliant console.
NATO_Duke @ Aug 24th 2007 1:03PM
I no longer believe there is a Spore. There is just some guy making little videos of animated characters and then pretending he is controlling them with mice. This game could make the "new" Duke Nukem look like it was made lickity split.
Lemmiwinks @ Aug 24th 2007 2:49PM
I just thought of something... is this going to be Vista only?!
Lemmiwinks @ Aug 24th 2007 2:49PM
...on the PC, I mean.
Korova @ Aug 24th 2007 3:45PM
So they will never release it for PC, and then release it for other platforms after that.
Ok. [holding breath]
Jackson Pritt @ Aug 24th 2007 6:44PM
Considering how horrifyingly bad all of the Sims games on the DS are, I have no reason to assume that the DS version of SPORE will be anything other than absolute shit.

Spore is in development for the Wii, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PSP. Apparently, EA wants all of those versions out within six months of the PC/DS/mobile release, to market the title for the holiday season. So, Spore will be out by June 2008 if that is true.
