PAX 07 hands-on: Metroid Prime 3

The controls are exactly the same in normal or expert mode, with the exception of Wiimote sensitivity. Expert mode is way more sensitive, and requires much subtler movements. It also enables quicker motion. Looking around and turning with the Wiimote was awkward at first, but it immediately clicked and I was ready to run and jump around. Shooting, of course, is mapped to A, and jumping to B, so there was no problem there. Z on the Nunchuk locks on, and C activates the morph ball. Down on the D-pad shoots missiles. All of these worked well and intuitively. The only exception is scanning: I never quite got it, but it basically involved holding Z, moving the Wiimote to point at an area in the corner of the screen, then holding Z again. It's the only part that I can honestly say takes getting used to.
The best part of the controls is easily the grapple beam, which involves targeting a grapple point and making a lasso motion with the Nunchuk, then pulling back. Once I started doing that unconsciously, I felt pretty cool (I wasn't.) It seems that Nintendo has finally found a "hardcore" equivalent to Wii Sports: if not in popularity, at least in deriving actual enjoyment from the basic control scheme.
Oh, and, in case you were wondering, the game looks hot, especially on those big fancy screens Nintendo was using at their demo stations. We should all get some of those.

Dammit, by the time this is out in the UK I'll be at uni with no time to play it. I'll just have to skip a few lectures.
RP @ Aug 25th 2007 5:19PM
"Shooting, of course, is mapped to A, and jumping to B"
Isn't it the other way around?
Fernando Rocker @ Aug 25th 2007 5:23PM
You can change that in the Options menu.
bounchfx @ Aug 25th 2007 5:58PM
I was going to say... jumping with b and shooting with a is the dumbest shit I've ever heard.. that would annoy me forever. besides - it doesn't even make sense
Matters @ Aug 25th 2007 8:58PM
In my opinion shooting with the B button is the dumbest thing ever.
Sure, it's more like a gun but when you're trying to be accurate all it does is make things harder.
Personally I would prefer the shoot button to be on the nunchuck. That way I can keep my hand steady while I look around and shoot.
Hitting the B button causes a slight twitch of the remote is kind of annoying. I found it VERY annoying in Red Steel when trying to shoot accurately from a distance. Switching to the A button was only slightly better.
I miss the old SNES days when ALL of the buttons were configurable.
Ihar `Philips` Filipau @ Aug 25th 2007 9:27PM
A is closer to shooting trigger in real guns. B is like analogue trigger and is poor equivalent.
I never were able to understand why game controllers of Xbox and PS3 try to make it button with long travel distance.
Real guns are not like that. If your finger would have to travel long distance - then targeting might go of. Despite its look and name - trigger - it is really a button with pretty short travel distance. And it is also normally very easy to press. To me AKM/S (== AK47, modified with folding stock) (as well as soviet handgun TT and 5mm training rifle) were easier to shoot compared to Xbox360/GeOW. On AK one needs to press for about 2-2.5mm and shooting is triggered. In GeOW it felt like eternity: time between I start pressing trigger and gun in game would actually start shooting. That felt really awkward. And really tiresome for fingers.
A is better for shooting.
B for jumping should be OK. B is pressed with index finger and involves many palm muscles potentially disrupting targeting - but when jumping, one doesn't care about that much.
Qitsyoj @ Aug 26th 2007 1:17PM
Oh thank you, thank you! I preordered the game yesterday and if I was stuck that shitty control scheme of shooting with A I would have sold the damn thing on ebay.
bm @ Aug 26th 2007 4:11PM
@ Ihar `Philips` Filipau:
You do realize the Wii's B button is NOT an analogue trigger?
It's just a button, like the Z-button on the N64 controller, and likewise, it's great for shooting purposes.
Fernando Rocker @ Aug 25th 2007 5:22PM
I love you Nintendo, for bring this amazing piece of art.
Definitely, this is going to be good. It will be the best control scheme for a FPS in a console. And I believe that in the nex gen, the others companies are going to imited Nintendo.
From here, theres no excuse for developers for make shitty games on the Wii.
Jake @ Aug 25th 2007 5:27PM
Work on the spelling, bud. Prime and Galaxy are definately the best looking upcoming Wii games. I haven't bothered unpacking my Wii since moving. But, my guess is that I will be once Metroid drops.
SoulBlade @ Aug 25th 2007 5:27PM
there's plenty of excuses - the first being they suck ;)
Alexander @ Aug 25th 2007 5:28PM
Amen.
This kind of control scheme is going to be the standard in the future.
Fernando Rocker @ Aug 25th 2007 5:30PM

I need english lessons! =)
How is my english? Very bad?
SoulBlade @ Aug 25th 2007 5:57PM
Jake, I'd also learn how to spell 'definitely' also.
mkoracer @ Aug 26th 2007 4:01PM
hehe also, also, ur an also!
Megaqwerty @ Aug 25th 2007 11:27PM
Hey! Fernando isn't a native, so stop giving him flack: his English is better than most.

Please don't torture me
(curls up in a fetal position, murmuring "just 3 more days")
Jake @ Aug 25th 2007 5:29PM
Oh snap. I forgot Prime was coming out in just 3 days. I need to haul some serious ass on Bioshock.
I am so used to games being few and far between. Now there is at least one great looking game coming out per week until Christmas-ish. YES!
SoulBlade @ Aug 25th 2007 5:29PM
im waiting for the haters... OMG WHERE'S THE MULTIPLAYER? OMG THOSE GFX ARE TEH SUX COMPARED TO BIOSHOCK.
this game's gonna be fun, and it's gonna be good. can't really ask for much more. plus it'll be a first person game with great controls - i've always hated dual analog for FPS, and i even didn't like golden eye... so im hoping this rocks.
TWiNKiE @ Aug 26th 2007 12:45PM
Haters???? Who in their right mind could possibly hate Metroid?
bob-e @ Aug 25th 2007 5:40PM
Have they done any kind of anti aliasing. Or is this MP3 going to look as jaggie as Twilight Princess on a large LCD?
Lifted 0ne 4l9 @ Aug 25th 2007 5:50PM
well twighlight princess was a gamecube game they just added wii controls, mirrored the game and slapped it on a Wii disc, Metroid Prime 3 was designed for the Wii and is a major Nintendo title (yes of course zelda is a major Nintendo title too but was created on an older system) not some generic mini game collection, so you can expect it to look better than twighlight princess.

Pessimist For Life @ Aug 25th 2007 5:44PM
When is this coming out in the uk?
Admiral_Mike @ Aug 25th 2007 5:52PM
26 october
Ihar `Philips` Filipau @ Aug 25th 2007 9:32PM
Yeah. As gaming goes, it sucks to be in Europe.
MP3:C now is available for pre-order for 50€ or £33.
ComradeTrotskii @ Aug 25th 2007 5:49PM
Bob-e: I've no idea but remember this is a Wii game whereas (graphically) Twilight Princess was a Gamecube game.
Now I know that sentence will be easy to take the piss out of if you want, so don't.
blackbird @ Aug 25th 2007 6:18PM
Is it really A=shoot, B=jump? I thought the standard shooting button for the wii was B, as shown by all the E3 demos, including some of MP3.
James @ Aug 25th 2007 6:22PM
2nd time now, you can change that in the options.
blackbird @ Aug 25th 2007 6:26PM
well, how do you know that. What makes you so sure. How do you JC just didn't mix them up?
hvnlysoldr @ Aug 25th 2007 6:41PM
Because every EVERY single Q&A about controls mentions that.
vidGuy @ Aug 25th 2007 7:10PM
Bingo. The A and B button swap has been mentioned in nearly every preview of the game for six months now.
hvnlysoldr @ Aug 25th 2007 6:44PM
By GoNintendo Metroid Prime 3 uses Havok physics. On Havok's on site it shows MP3:C uses them.
http://gonintendo.com/?p=23674
hvnlysoldr @ Aug 25th 2007 7:33PM
Right correct this from MP3:C to Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Monolith Soft's Disaster Day of Crisis.
samfish @ Aug 26th 2007 12:18AM
Little Big Planet for Wii CONFIRMED!
hvnlysoldr @ Aug 25th 2007 6:45PM
Shoot. Jumped the gun that's for Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
hvnlysoldr @ Aug 25th 2007 6:46PM
Gah! my eye patch! I feel so naked without it.
hvnlysoldr @ Aug 25th 2007 6:46PM
Gah! I'm blind! Oh my eye patch came back.
REUYL @ Aug 25th 2007 7:03PM
Oh snap son!
phattie @ Aug 25th 2007 6:57PM
It looks the same as Metroid Prime.
REUYL @ Aug 25th 2007 7:03PM
Every hands-on article on the internet disagrees with you.
vidGuy @ Aug 25th 2007 7:10PM
Every person who has played the game disagrees with you.
DonWii @ Aug 25th 2007 9:46PM
Lets be fair people. Only 1up agrees with him.
DonWii @ Aug 25th 2007 9:53PM
To be more specific, Shane from 1up, who felt the need to compare MP3 to Halo 3, Bioshock and...here comes the kick in the groin...Heavenly Sword.
hvnlysoldr @ Aug 25th 2007 10:21PM
Wii groin at your groan joke.
License to ill @ Aug 26th 2007 12:48AM
@ Don wii
Yeah and all the wii fanboys did exactly what every other fan tard does, cry like little children.
He sucks, he never played the game, he's a hack, you call that journalism, wha wha wha. Its his preview and he actually didn't say anything bad about the game. I mean if you were looking for bio-shock looking graphics you're shit out of luck.
Personally I think the game looks tight...
Dan @ Aug 25th 2007 7:00PM
This game looks like it's shaping up to be pretty awesome. As for the graphics, well... people need to just shutup about the graphics unless they've actually played it. Viewing screenshots on a computer screen does not justify what the actual visual experience will be like. Nor do videos, high-res or not. I need to play it on an actual TV screen to get the idea. /rambling
Anyway, this is definitely something to look forward to.
vidGuy @ Aug 25th 2007 7:12PM
Can't wait for the third/fourth stellar game on the Wii and the first in the trifecta for 2007. I've just got to find time to finish the last 10% of MP2...
DeoWulf @ Aug 25th 2007 7:17PM
Yes, I've actually seen a video where the person changed the button scheme. The reason it's default mapped to A-shoot B-jump is a nod to the first two Primes on the Cube, where A was always shoot. Some people like Prime better that way. I will personally be a B-shoot guy.
As for graphics, find someone smart who bought the game and watch it at their house, then make your decision. You'd be surprised what Retro can do with the hardware they're given.
3 days, 3 days, 3...
ThornedVenom @ Aug 25th 2007 10:56PM
Thank you for explaining me why shoot was A by default... because quite frankly, all my mind was thinking was "WhyTF?".
