PAX 07: Our very own Penny Arcade Adventures trailer
It's Interactive Day for Joystiq's PAX coverage! First we got to assist in the creation of a Sam & Max scene, and now we made a dude in the Penny Arcade game trailer bald!
The Hothead booth at PAX had a demo of the character creation system in On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness. After we finished our character editing, the demo presented a video from the game with our character in the lead role. It then offered to email us the video, which means we get to share it with all of you! Enjoy the video, starring a guy who looks not that much like any of us!

I am actually pretty impressed with how this is turning out. Is the character creation in depth enough to make a character resemble yourself closely, like, say, a Mii? Or is it closer to the "make yourself into an M&M" kinda thing?

Read JC's earlier impressions. Slightly less options than creating a Mii. So far.

this game looks shit hot
also character customization is the new fad. At least it's a good one :)

I wouldn't call it a fad, it is in itself a game sub-type:
Basically, in terms of characters, there's 3 types:
[1] non-existant (includes both games with no player character like tetris, or games with no player character developement, like Pong.
[2] fixed (most games use this, to fix character details, name changing doesn't count. No point putting examples, most games, with the exception of MMOs, fall in this caragory.
[3] unfixed (most MMOs use this, to improve character association with the player. This INCLUDES template characters, where the character inherently has no characteristics, but they are gradually custom-built by the character in the course of the game.)
[3.5] hybrid (basically, certain key assets of characters, usually looks and names, are set in stone, but most parts of the character are actually customixable, within limitations. Most RPGs follow this route.)
More games are moving towards option 3, BUT the story and game possibilities option 3 is limited, when compared to option 2; It's basically a question of how much control over the character does the developer want to give to the player.

no it is a fad. gta:sa, this penny-arcade one, miis, tenchu z (which i just got, it's cool), and I'm sure a few others. all of which are fairly recent games

Character customization has existed since the SNES days (maybe earlier). And is usually a selling point for some games. It's always existed in MMOs and often times fighters will include some type of create your own. Hell, Fable was a big create your own.

LOL I love the little homage to Day of the Tentacle right there at the beginning.

Why some games try to get a cool cell shading and then destroy it by using realistic maps and enviroments ?
BakedBeans&Spam @ Sep 14th 2007 2:32PM
What would be cool is much customization as PSO or PSU, now that would be a LOT of stuff
