Metroid Dread is currently a legend, it was mentioned at some point as the sequel to Metroid Fusion, a DS side-scroller, but Nintendo never said anything official about it
My guess is that they're just pulling our chain, though. I mean Gruntilda made an allusion to a "Banjo-Threeie" at the end of Banjo Tooie, and that game never materialized on a Nintendo platform, and is still only in a developmental state, many years later and under a different company

don't forget that Dread may be a plotline item .. like the prime from metroid prime ... so Dreads may exist in metroid universe even without the Metroid Dread game
