Unreal Tournament 3 gets no demo on PS3, PC in the clear

There will be a PC demo for Epic's Unreal Tournament 3 before the game's release in November, but the PS3 version is just out of luck. Epic VP Mark Rein told Eurogamer that it's like what they told Microsoft when they wanted a Gears of War demo, "You've got a choice - you can have the demo this year or the game this year."

Rein emphasized once again that Epic is not a huge company, a reason given by Sony for sending in their ninja engineers to help get UT3 out the door on time. Rein say the PC demo will end up being a beta, giving programmers feedback to fix the game before launch. The Xbox 360 version is expected early next year -- it'll definitely be interesting to see how the whole multiplayer situation looks between PSN and Xbox Live. We're definitely expecting some phenomenal complaining about which handles multiplayer better regarding ease of use. Unless the Xbox FPS fanboys are still focused on playing Halo 3 multiplayer at that point.

You talk about the PC and the ps3 but not the 360?

Epic has said they're currently focused on their holiday 2007 game line-up, which is the PS3 and PC versions of UT3 and the PC version of Gears of War. UT3 for the 360 isn't a priority for them now, so they likely wouldn't be able to give a definitive answer to that question.

The 360 and PS3 BLOWS.. UT always was a PC game, Epic just wants to make the console money too (Can't blame them even though they are wimpy conpaired to my gaming rig) :D The Graphic, Sound, Physics will always be on the PC. I hope they have cross platform so PS3 and Xbox players will be able to join againt PC players and see HOW BAD they get OWNED :P Your controler may be good for Madden but they suck balls for a FPS!

Between seeing CliffyB refuse to insult the PS3 during a Gears interview a year or two back, him actually saying as his final words in the interview "the PS3 is cool too", and Epic's release date and user-content hijinks between platforms, I'm curious as to whether or not Gears 2 will be a 360 exclusive.

Microsoft owns the rights to GEARS so theres no way ever that it would come out on PS3. Sucks for PS3 fans because it is a masterpiece. Ill be patient and wait for thi son my 360. Theres plenty of other games to tide me over anyway.

I am looking forward to seeing a game that is effectively able to leverage the PS3's graphical capabilities, and provides a licensable engine for third parties. From Rein's comments, we may actually have our first game that looks better on PS3 than 360.

PS3 graphical performance has been an embarassment to date. We need better competition between the two HD platforms.

Well most muilti-plat games for the PS3 are ports fromt he 360, and devs don't bother in improving it.

The PS3 graphical capabilities have been just fine so far. They seem bad because Sony promised a huge increase over 360 capabilities and obviously didn't deliver that.

But calling PS3 graphics a joke so far is silly. Calling the games themselves a joke wouldn't be silly, though. It would be agreeing with the majority of professional hardcore gaming critics.

Playstation 3 cannot be considered an embarrassment by any stretch of the imagination, but they did hype their machine to be vastly superior to the xbox 360. They called the 360 xbox 1.5, arrogant simply arrogant. That is why many consumers in the States are so jaded by the PS3, because most of the consumers were told they were silly by Sony for being early adopters of the 360 when a more enhanced superior god machine was around the corner. Now with the PS3 a year in its development it is no better, and arguably inferior to the 360 in graphics, games, and title acquisitions. If Sony would back off their statements of overwhelming technical superiority and chose to look at the 360 as a REAL competitor then I think the PR tide would turn in favor of Sony until then F--- them for being so arrogant and strong headed.

Im guessing, there wont be. I think we'll see cross platform play between ps3 and pc, but its really wishful thinking to believe that there will be console cross platform plat.

There definitely isn't going to be cross platform play.
Microsoft already stated that they are too big of buttholes to allow that.

And what a great idea that would have been. But that would probably mean that PS3 version would be lowered graphically to 360's sub-par graphics

Yeah, it wouldn't be fair anyways. Me thinks the old 360 gamers would have a distinct skill advantage, especially in a shooter. Maybe not in Madden or Tiger, but in a Halo-like shooter...mass pwnage would ensue.

It'd be really fun, though, because some of my friends are split between owning different consoles and we could all hook up online.

It wouldnt be fair alright, but I would guess that would be because of the ps3 and the ability to play with m+k. You also said it before. UT is more twitch than Halo. In that respect it would be something new to 360 users.

While I believe it wont happen, I agree with you on wanting it to happen. It would an awesome "real" console rivalry, rather then the stupid bickering that happens on joystiq or (insert any game forum here).

Even if one did have better graphics then the other (which I doubt), it wouldnt matter. PC people have been playing for years with different spec machines. Granted, the person with the better spec machine has an advantage, but I would never think they would make them identical for the reason you mentioned.

Being that UT is a lead game on PC, this should come as no surprise. Epic has always released a demo before their games.

UT is a twitch shooter though, so I'm not so sure console only gamers are going to be happy with it(even with the m/k option on PS3). At least they weren't when Epic released the championship editions on console as well as UT99 for the PS2. This game's all about precision aiming, hence why Sony is allowing for the mouse.

I think MS is really screwing up with this one, as they need to allow for M/K, especially since they aren't even allowing for mods at this point. To me, this can't get any more ironic. MS doesn't realize how many more gamers like myself would happily play more games on their system, especially shooters, if they enabled mouse control for their games. It's BS, but oh well. MS has no problem mandating the compatibility of the 360 controller for GFW branded games, why not allow for the millions of players that would rather use a mouse and keyboard on the 360? As primarily a PC Gamer, I gotta give it to Sony for at least trying to satisfy us m/k snobs.

That's why I like to tell developers, they have a choice. No demo this year, no purchase this year. I'll not buy a product without trying it first.

Well then why not rent it Toby? hasn't that been the preferred method to "try" out games without buying them for years now? =)

Besides its not like every game on every system has a downloadable demo in any case.

But as far as i remember there was no demo for gears of war and that turned out well... i have no reason to believe UT3 wouldnt as well.

360 version early next year? No. Mark had stated that specifically because they are a small company they will not be looking at the 360 version until after Christmas. He said the mod conundrum on the 360 and the Microsoft issue of closed development would have to wait as well. That means maybe beta stage by April 2008, launch in June or as late as E3.

I hope by PC they mean PC and Mac I am getting sick of going into boot camp to play games. UT2004 is the only Mac game I own, and I love it, but I can't wait till UT3.
