There's quite a bit of differences actually, only one Digimon at a time (normally,) they speak, they exist in a parellel world which they can cross over from, 6 evolutionary stages most of the time aren't permanent, I could go on! :3

On the Pokemon vs Digimon issue, Digimon is a lot different than Pokemon. I actually prefer the Digimon show myself. At least Series 1 and 3.

Anyway, Digimon World 1 was the worst game I have ever played aside from that NES Back to the Future Game. I will never touch another Digimon game ever again.

Arent these two pretty much the same, the commercials I mean, except they have a different voice, and the "dawn" one gives you a hint of storyline? Also, how did you guys tell these two apart? Neither of the ads favor one game over the other.

Wait! One of the background is purple, and the other is orange! Also, the voices are the same...

It's probable that it was inspired by Pokemon, but they're incredibly different when it comes to their themes, the ones developed in their respective Animes.

Pokemon has that whole happy-daisy Pokemon living with/being trained by humans in the same world, whereas Digimon (usually) involves alternate dimentions and a crazed evil villain hell-bent on conquest.
