PS3 60GB are officially all out in the wild
PC World reports all the 60GB PS3s are out of the house and looking for a home. Sony's Dave Karraker confirms, "We no longer have any inventory in SCEA warehouses. All inventory has been purchased and shipped to retailers." So, if you still want a PS3 without limited backwards compatibility, here's your last chance. Once the 60GB sell out, that's all she wrote.
Now, we have to ask, was it all a clearance sale or will the 80GB drop down to the $499 price once the channel is cleared? Karraker says, "We won't be making any further announcements ... until the 60GB model is exhausted and market conditions are evaluated." Place your bets if it'll be before or after the holiday. Whatever it takes to build that install base at this point.
[Thanks Marcus]

A storm is coming.
Jerk Face @ Aug 30th 2007 10:25AM
Just as I read that, there was totally thunder outside. No joke. Ha ha..
joeyg @ Aug 30th 2007 10:25AM
sounds reasonable to not announce feature plans...
although the funny thing is, M$ would have claimed to sold x million units if they were out of stock even though there are plenty sitting on store shelves.
vidGuy @ Aug 30th 2007 10:26AM
Well I think it's very obvious what Sony plans to do, especially since they've been telling us about it for more than a year. "The PS3 is upgradeable", they told us. They want it to always have the best.
So I fully expect there to be a new model available when the 60GB is sold out. The 80GB system will not be boxed with any game and will be sold for $499, while a 120GB system, maybe with a faster BluRay and a game, will be sold at $599. After that cycle, Sony might finally realize that they need to drop their entry price to the console and will move the 120GB to $399 and an even newer model at $499. By that time, it's late 2008 and it costs twice as much to buy any PS3 as it does any 360.
Sony: I don't want upgraded parts. I want a console that doesn't cost $500+ to get in to. This was a clearance sale - you can buy PS3 for $499 and $599, the same prices we saw at launch.
For every month Sony doesn't budge it's lowest console price from $500, I expect them to lose market share - more so when the 360 has a stellar lineup and the PS3 is still shouting "WAIT FOR MGS4 AND FFXIII!"
Crono @ Aug 30th 2007 11:18AM
I wish I could vote you up above 3 hearts.
Calviin @ Aug 30th 2007 2:18PM
I too have that wish.
h0mi @ Aug 30th 2007 2:24PM
This fixation with a $500 price point, let alone $600 is going to doom the ps3 to dreamcast land.
vidGuy @ Aug 30th 2007 4:54PM
So I take it people agree?

I would get a PS3 if it had rumble and a DVD player, I want to play team fortress 2 without having to pay £40 a year.
cc123 @ Aug 30th 2007 10:39AM
It plays DVDs.
megaStryke @ Aug 30th 2007 10:40AM
I'm sure he means a built-in DVD player instead of a built-in Blu-Ray player.
cc123 @ Aug 30th 2007 10:48AM
Ah, I misunderstood.
What he meant to say then was "I will never get a PS3".
Joshua @ Aug 30th 2007 10:49AM
It has both, and a pretty good DVD upscalar, too.
Slaziman @ Aug 30th 2007 10:57AM
He means DVD player as in, instead of the Blu-Ray player, presumably because of the cost?
John @ Aug 30th 2007 10:34AM
This makes sense. I got my 60 GB version from sonystyle.com - I opened a credit account, will get $150 off in 3 months, free shipping, and no interest for a year - so basically, I have one year to pay off $250. EASY!
DarthDavid @ Aug 30th 2007 10:38AM
I REALLY want the 60GB...just for the EE. I can just upgrade the hard drive myself, but I don't know....I'm wondering if they will lower the price for the 60GB or retailers like BestBuy will give you a hot bundle before the holiday season....I don't want to miss out on getting a 60GB EE system....this waiting game is killing me. =(
Justice @ Aug 30th 2007 10:46AM
I really want to get the 60 gig PS3. Maybe I'll ask my parents to get for me fot Christmas. I really want Warhawk and the other sweet games for it. Also no point for a 80 gig when i can upgrade it myself for $70 from newegg.
Player1 @ Aug 30th 2007 1:07PM
What other sweet games? Every time I consider getting a PS3 I take a look at the games. Everythings either on the 360 (and has a better rating on it), or is coming to the 360 with better online support, or is nothing worth spending $500 for a system. They really need some good exclusives, or for Blu-ray to officially be declared the HD format war winner. A price drop certainly wouldn't hurt either.
Justice @ Aug 30th 2007 1:26PM
@ PLayer 1, Oh the sweet games I'm not talking about for the PS3 are:
Heavenly Sword
Haze
Little Big Planet
R&C ToD
White Knight Story
Time Crisis 4
Tekken 5
UT 3( PS3 is getting the better stuff)
Eight Days
FF13
GT5
KZ2
Uncharted Drake's Fortune
War Devil
Zone of the Enders 3
The Getaway 3
and more..no I'm not talking about these sweet games =\. *To my liking*
There are more, but I listed what I like. Plus Home. Yay! :D
FYI- PS3 get's 360's ports, and dev's complain alot about the PS3 cell coding thing. Hence 360's get better raitings, dev's don't take time to work on it can complain too much about it being a hassle, when other devs made great games and going to in the future.
Player1 @ Aug 30th 2007 3:04PM
So how many of those are out right now?
Justice @ Aug 30th 2007 3:21PM
1st you ask what sweet games, I gave them too you, now you want a time limit? =\
The games I mentioned are not comming out this year besides HS and UT3 I think, but Home should come in Oct and Eye of Judgement. And Warhawk is out, same with Lair.
Games are comming out for the PS3 at the end of this year, even if it might not perfer to other people
Benny @ Aug 30th 2007 3:33PM
I think I just heard the distant cry of a fanboy dying.
The thing is, the 360 right now has the best lineup hands down. Plus, it's becoming the lead next-gen platform for games coming out on more than one console. With Bioshock this month, Halo 3 next month and Mass Effect in November, I'm quite sure that most people would agree the 360 is a better choice. For now at least.
Justice @ Aug 30th 2007 3:53PM
Oh another fanboy thing, oh gasp! Yeah i'm a fanboy because I bashed the 360 and was answering a question that someone asked. =\ Check youself.
And w/the 360 I'm tired of shotters. That's all that really comes to me when you name the big times. All just shoot. I'm not denying that they are good, heck I played GOW co-op w/my friend. I enjoyed it.
It's just all the games you guys like are all abut shooting. My friend was talking about this yesterday, he's tired of these shotting games. At least more variety comes w/the PS3. Even if they are not good or hyped up to me doesn't mean squat. All the big titles I hear people say for the 360 are shotters. What can I say, America loves their guns.
Hence most of the sales for the 360 are in America, because guns and shooting up things recklessly appeal to us, same way RPG's appeal to the Japanese audience. Call me a fanboy, I dc. I would enjoy the variety in known genres of games like GT5, HS, FF13, than a good games that just fall under a shooter category.
I would like the 360 alot more if they had a good exlcusive that wasn't a shooter. And to make a good game knowing what appeals to American's is a no brainer, we just love guns. Take away that what do you have?
Bloo @ Aug 30th 2007 4:45PM
"Take away that what do you have?"
Oblivion, Guitar Heroes, Forza, PGR, Madden, Burnout, Fight Night, DOA4, Viva Pinata, Dead Rising, NBA 2K/live, Dirt, Need for Speed, Moto GP, Marvel Ultimate Alliance, Comman & Conquer 3, Tony Hawk, Lego Star Wars, Table Tennis, WWE, Tiger Woods, Virtua Tennis, Kameo, Pr Evo soccer, LOTR, Baseball, Blue Dragon, Stuntman, Overlord
and that doesnt even include arcade titles like Castlevania, Geometry Wars, Bomberman, Pac Man CE, Prince of Persia, Uno, Catan, Cloning Clyde, Marble Blast, Carcassonne, Eets, Wik, Lumines, Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, Puzzle Fighter, Zuma, Outpost Kaloki, Mutant Storm, Sonic, Roboblitz, and Hexic
Unlike you I only pointed out current games or the list would have been ridiculous. The whole point of course is that it has already shown many times that the 360 is not just a "shooter" console just like the PS3 is not just a movie player just as a Wii is not just a waggle machine.
Player1 @ Aug 30th 2007 5:16PM
You are really making this way too easy:
http://www.xbox360fanboy.com/2007/08/10/17-of-360-titles-are-shooters/
Justice @ Aug 30th 2007 5:27PM
Sigh,-_-'' I was mentioning exclusive titles. Hence I was mentioning GOW, H3, BS, etc. The games that everyone seems to accociate the 360's success and attractivity. I know there are other games, but exclusive wise that got the 360 on the map are shooters. Reason I listed PS3 exclusive titles, because the muilit plat can go on various systems.
Note Benny mentioned Bioshock, Halo 3 and Mass Effect :D, we both know there are more games other than that, but like I said the shooter games are what people refer to 360.
Wes @ Aug 31st 2007 12:58AM
Good point Justin. Why, when I think of Xbox 360 exclusives like PGR3/PGR4/Forza 2/Kameo Elements of Power/Overlord/Dead Rising/C&C3(so far exclusive to consoles), I just think shooter, shoooter shooter.
I mean PGR3/4? Those cars don't come with guns but I can 'shoot' my car into another car? right? its a shooter, huh Justice?
Not to mention overlord. I keep thinking about how I 'shoot' orders are my minions to go attack enemies and how I swing my sword and 'shoot' straight for the enemy. Its a shooter too, huh Justice?
and command & conquer 3? That's just too easy. It has tanks. Tanks shoot, enuogh said. Clearly it must be a shooter too and not a strategy game right Justice?
Man, you've been shown through links and large comprehensive lists counter agruments to your standard PS3 fanboy rants about 360 is a shooter! ps3 has such great games coming...eventually! Christmas/Holiday's isn't important. It's next year's that will be!
Damn all those exclusive shooters! Heck, even this article shows Shooters are not the only type of games on the system and far from it. So why would you assume the exclusives associated with its success are?:
http://www.xbox360fanboy.com/2007/08/10/17-of-360-titles-are-shooters/
Sigh. Oh well, there's no arguing with a fanboy who refuses to give up even when beat and counter-argued on every point with examples. So in your eyes I guess yes, all these exclusive on conole to 360 titles are shooters and the 360 is just a shooter console! Damn it!
Ah well, enough Joystiq for one day, time to go 'shoot' my stats up through killing monsters in Blue Dragon or maybe 'Shoot' some orders at my minions in Overlord.
Justice @ Aug 31st 2007 9:28AM
Sigh, when was the last time someone here mentioned some racing game exclusive entitles to PS3's success. Benny sure didn't mention it. All my frends, talk about the shotter exclusives. Never some racing game exclusive. Espically when they see 360 is a good system. And I'am talking about exclusive success are mentioned by the exclusive shooter title. Eveeryone here talks about Gears, Bio, and Halo. Now Mass Effect. You got yourself in something where you didn't need to be.
na2ru1 @ Sep 1st 2007 1:00PM
Hey justin. Ignore the plague. They jus can't take it that some1 who hasnt brought a nxt gen yet wants a PS3 INSTEAD of a 360. I dont kno y they should worry since it DOES have the lead (ATM....or is it the Wii). PS3 is gna hav a gd line up for Christmas ;)
samfish @ Aug 30th 2007 10:46AM
I'm such a sap for thinking about buying on a 60gb before it's gone...and I don't even like Sony! I really just want the PS2 backwards compatibility.
Alas, I fear my rather ancient, crappy PS2 might be getting ready to up and die soon.
Joshua @ Aug 30th 2007 10:52AM
I actually bought a PS3 for that main reason. I never really owned a PS1 or PS2 (for too long...), so I missed out on a lot of good games. I bought a 60 GB PS3 to make sure I still have a chance to play those games, along with the future games coming out for PS3. There was no way I'd ever have purchased a PS3 without the EE+GS chip. I just wouldn't have been able to justify it.
konajinx @ Aug 30th 2007 11:12AM
So just buy a new PS2. They're dirt cheap, plus you'll keep those PS3 profits down. Everyone wins!
vidGuy @ Aug 30th 2007 11:12AM
You can buy that **styling** white PS2 slim that's coming out, ahahhaha.
reaver @ Aug 30th 2007 10:52AM
So, since I bought the 3-year PS3 Warranty from Best Buy. If my PS3 craps out in a year, I have a good chance of getting an 80GB?
Slaziman @ Aug 30th 2007 10:55AM
Unless you play obscure titles, why is the "limited" backwards compatibility an issue..?
Night Elve @ Aug 30th 2007 11:13AM
I don't think it will be an issue in the future, Sony is constantly updating the PS and PS2 compatibility.
Arkay @ Aug 30th 2007 10:58AM
Rumors are that Sony will eventually stop managing two different firmwares and kill the hardware PS2 support in the older systems, forcing software BC on everyone.
Its not unlikely.
upz @ Aug 30th 2007 11:57AM
Actually, there's only one firmware. And it detects whether you have the EE or not to determine whether to use software or hardware emulation. Stop the propaganda.
J.Goodwin @ Aug 30th 2007 11:00AM
I'd be surprised if Sony cuts the 80gig system to $499 before Christmas. I'd view that as a sign of significant desperation.
For those who live in cities, the comparable example would be a newspaper that has to hand out free copies in the afternoon to meet their advertiser's circulation requirements.
Jake @ Aug 30th 2007 11:00AM
Dear Sony,
I am mostly concerned with the entry price for the PS3. Larger HDD, WiFi, and perfect BC don't mean anything to me. If I get a PS3, it will be for PS3 games. Not TiVo. Not Bluray (though I would use it). Not to avoid running a cord 4 feet.
Give me "hardcore" games and an entry price at or below $400 (preferably $300) and I will buy your system. I always do. Until then, I will keep rocking Bioshock, soon Halo, and Mass Effect after that.
Actually, don't worry about getting me this year because I will be plenty busy gamewise on the 360. Next year when you have amazing games, though, I will be wanting to hit you up.
Hugs N' Kisses
Jake
vidGuy @ Aug 30th 2007 11:16AM
You know, if the PS3 had the power it has but dropped all the extras and ran off dual-layer DVD, it could probably sell for $299-$349 and would most likely be this generation's leader already.
john @ Aug 30th 2007 11:11AM

I think Sony is spot on. The PS3 is a great deal for anyone who can read the fine print. It delivers out of the box with so many great innovations it overwhelms most people in this era of ADHD. The CBE is the fastest CPU on the market for the price, period. It is double the speed of the 360 hands down. Blu-Ray game storage with DVD upscaling / movie playback. 50gb vs 9gb, nuff said. Built in wireless nic, wireless charge and play, Blue Tooth, 4 USB on front, memory card (SD, Flash, Memory Stick) included. No batteries to buy, no online pay for play subscription to pay for. Plus an upgradeable hard drive from any 2.5 sized drive, any. Plus industry tested hardware from a proven electronics company. Sony went all out removing any proprietary memory cards, cameras, headsets etc. Any Blue Tooth, USB will work.
Crono @ Aug 30th 2007 11:24AM
You were doing fine until "twice as fast as 360 hands down". All real world benchmarks put them at a tie or with PS3 slightly ahead. Games don't use floating point operations, gene folding does. Thats why PS3 excels at the latter, but has so far come up lacking in the former
vidGuy @ Aug 30th 2007 11:25AM
Wow, you read like you copied a Sony ad. I agree with you that the technology is sold at a decent price. But the issue is that 1) not all of that is necessary and 2) selling the best technology doesn't guarantee success, meaning few 3rd parties (which Sony depends on) will be interested in your console, and 3) entry price kills.
Okay, so the processor is probably better. Doesn't matter if developers aren't coding to use any extra power. Movie-playback is no big deal when we are talking video games. Wireless? Cool but also shunned in video gaming. Everything else you listed is fluff and stuff I'd rather do with my PC - you know, that thing that nearly everyone has?
"Plus industry tested hardware from a proven electronics company." That's the best part there. Don't know if you've realized, but Sony has started to fall from it's electronics throne and is not considered the leader in many of the markets it once was.
Evan @ Aug 30th 2007 12:01PM
@oldest gamer "The CBE is the fastest CPU on the market for the price, period."
Remember that the PS2's Emotion Engine was faster than the Xbox and GameCube CPUs, in the same specs (Gigaflops and memory bandwidth), but that didn't translate into better looking games.
Crono @ Aug 30th 2007 11:21AM
Sony needs to start showing signs of desperation, because the situation is desperate for them. Not showing a desperation move just reinforces how out of touch they are with the market
