Today's squintiest video: NiGHTS phonecam clip
This one goes out to the NiGHTS fanboys, and probably only them. A phonecam video has surfaced, showing the upcoming Wii title, but the weak compression makes it look like we're watching through a rainstorm. We'll let our wild minds fill in the amazing gameplay we can't quite see -- this is about dreams and imagination, right? And for those of you who play games to avoid being creative, check out the better-quality trailer and a pre-E3 gameplay clip after the break.

As long as a koala bear craps a rainbow in my brain while playing Nights Sega will have done right. But they will rue the day they crap on the koala.
samfish @ Aug 30th 2007 12:49AM
I can't wait for this game.
You better not screw this one up, Sega! If they think people were pissed about Sonic on the 360/PS3...
E8 Foe @ Aug 30th 2007 2:53AM
Ugh, I"m torn. This looks awesome, but the Wii controls could harm it. Sometimes, when I think of NiGHTS, I say to myself, "self, just think how awesome this would be on 360! We don't need these new fangled Wii controls messing up one of my favorite franchises! We don't need motion control just because it 'can' be done!"
And then I remind myself how awesome Resident Wii-Vil 4 was, and I smile again.

Considering that the guy who made the first game was working with Sega to make a motion-sensing remote type thing eerily similar to the Wiimote for a NiGHTS sequel on the Dreamcast, I'm feeling pretty good about the Wii controls. On top of that, it looks like they're keeping the whole "3D world with really cool 2D gameplay" thing intact, which, in my mind, clears up some concerns about how much of a transition needs to be made from the original (and whether or not said transition will be completely screwed up).

Even if the motion controls suck, you can use a Classic Controller.
megaStryke @ Aug 30th 2007 10:23AM
Franchise? WHAT franchise? A single game and an Christmas expansion pack?
E8 Foe @ Aug 30th 2007 12:31PM
Well, uh...yeah.
Shhh.
Vegnagun @ Aug 30th 2007 3:29AM
Nights you say?
Slvrgun @ Aug 30th 2007 8:35AM
This game was brilliant using the Saturn Analog Pad. Not sure how motion controls will work.
samfish @ Aug 30th 2007 9:07AM
Given that Sega themselves WANTED to use motion control for the original Dreamcast sequel, I have faith that motion controls will work out for the best.
...insofar as you can trust Sonic Team to not muck it up, at least.
Mr Khan @ Aug 30th 2007 9:35PM
Yes, yes. Gather my children, for it is time for a history listen
Once upon a time, SEGA and Sonic Team decided to make a game called "Air NiGHTS" utilizing something called a "Saturn motion pad." But the evil trolls; Sony and Nintendo, killed the Saturn, and it never came around. Then the Dreamcast came, bringing hope again that Air NiGHTS and its tilt-based technology would come about. But Sony the evil troll killed the Dreamcast, and hope died again, and SEGA was diminished, until finally, the dream of "Air NiGHTS" was revived in March 2007, to the joy of all the inhabitants of the kingdom, under a new title

Don't forget that Sony didn't want Radiant Silvergun ported over to the PSX for a US release. Their reason was that they didn't want it because it wasn't 3-D.
WiNG @ Aug 30th 2007 8:47AM
well in this clip it looks like you can control nights with an IR reticle, using motion to add the flips and stuff.
Based on the other official clip my guess is there is also a more conventional control scheme with the nunchuck cstick moving nights and the wiimote motion adding flips
but come on wheres the nights music? thats what really brought it to like. That music vs the jackal or vs reala, CLASSIC
Lee @ Aug 30th 2007 9:10AM
OLDE.
I'm starting to like the control method where you point the Wii Remote at the screen though and NiGHTS follows the target. Usually i'd whine and complain of SEGA even thinking of creating another control scheme, but if done right NiGHTS could move more fluently as ever.
darklink @ Aug 30th 2007 9:15AM
This game looks good.
JZ @ Aug 30th 2007 10:33AM
Looks cool!
Shagittarius @ Aug 30th 2007 11:12AM
The gameplay looks to be 2d. Is this the way the original Nights was? It looks like your on a track and you can only move clockwise or counterclockwise around a specific path. Then in the moving into the Z-axis segments it looks like you can only move forward and backwards.
I never played the original Nights but I just wanted to know if this is always the way its been.
Tatticus @ Aug 30th 2007 11:40AM
yeah, the worlds were 3d but you were on a track as nights, think Klonoa. The parts that are on a z-axis you move left and right.
mr nimblewick @ Aug 30th 2007 11:50AM
It was a 2.5D game, as I think they call them now. New Super Mario Brothers type.
Shagittarius @ Aug 30th 2007 1:56PM
I was sorta hoping it would be more like a 3d Flow.
Word of the street. @ Aug 30th 2007 1:15PM
Seriously I dont know what the hell is happening at the end of the 3rd trailer.
Is hard to see it in the video but I don't think the formula aged well.Lets hope Sonic Team didn't screwed this one.
BTW the first video lol,It made the whole game look worst than the original sega saturn game.
DarkTetsuya @ Aug 30th 2007 4:53PM
The only way I see them screwing this game up is if Shadow the Hedgehog is an unlockable character. :P
Mr Khan @ Aug 30th 2007 7:02PM
lads and laddies, be prepared to wait
according to Wikipedia and a NiGHTS fansite, this game has been officially delayed into 2008

Although it'll free me up to buy Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn for Christmas instead
ThornedVenom @ Aug 30th 2007 7:55PM
What's wrong with the gameplay video with no BGM? Give me great soundtrack and make this game a must-have artistic masterpiece on the Wii.
I've never played the original one, but this game looks nice as long as they do not screw up the controls and camera like in the Sonic game on Wii (good aim, poor execution).
