Confirmed: LocoRoco PS3 is a screensaver
Rumor has it LocoRoco Cocoreccho is not a game, but a downloadable PS3 screensaver. Now Sony says it true, according to IGN. But the pseudo-sequel isn't characterized by passive voyeurism, rather it's a fully-interactive, uh, 'game' -- complete with objectives and an online leaderboard. Contrary to previous observation, SixAxis tilts will be used to manipulate the gameworld and guide up to 200 on-screen blobs, and Cocoreccho, the butterfly, is actually an automated guide (not the player's character). The real mystery now is what makes LocoRoco a screensaver. Will it launch automatically when the PS3 is idle; when a game or movie is paused? Could this be the start of a new initiative to knit PSN games into a seamless PS3 experience in which taking a "casual" break doesn't mean quitting to the XMB? We certainly hope so.
LocoRoco will be available on Japan's PSN September 21st. North American and European release dates have yet to be assigned.
Update: MTV's Stephen Totilo has gotten his hands on LocoRoco, and, while he's equally puzzled about the screensaver functionality (and even unsure it's true -- his demo launched from the XMB), he is able to clarify the core gameplay controls: Players do control the fluttering Cocoreccho and use the left analog stick to guide the butterfly -- titling the gameworld with SixAxis motions was not possible during Totilo's playtest. However, shaking the SixAxis when hovering above a key object does trigger certain gameworld alterations.
According to Totilo, LocoRoco is almost "an old-school point-and-click adventure game. We used the butterfly as a mouse pointer and utilized shakes of the Sixaxis controller in place of probing mouse clicks."

OMG YES!!! I have that game bookmarked! Good times, it also confuses people...
Patrick @ Aug 31st 2007 11:59AM
meh, oh oh *giggle* I just thought of something funny
Sony figured since there were no games on the PS3 that pretty much all would be idle so why not try and sell them something to do with that!
hvnlysoldr @ Aug 31st 2007 12:02PM
Better relaxing than Folding.

What the hell is this guy talking about? Speak English much?

Sometimes people start a sentence that's grammatically impossible to finish, but they are ethically opposed to the use of the backspace key.
Crono @ Aug 31st 2007 2:02PM
Waves, if I could have a sig on here, that statement would totally be it.

I was saying that since the ps3 players don't have anything to play do there machines would be idle putting them into a screen saver mode, so sony is bringing a game to them to play there.
mr nimblewick @ Aug 31st 2007 12:03PM
Wow, the Wii really is destroying video games as we know it. Now the PS3 has gone "casual" too.
This is the biggest domino effect threat since communism.
hvnlysoldr @ Aug 31st 2007 12:12PM
If only we had won World War III communism would have died right then and there.
mr nimblewick @ Aug 31st 2007 12:42PM
I love that people vote my comment down as if I'm not both a proclaimed casual gamer and Wii owner.
Mr. P @ Aug 31st 2007 12:53PM
They voted your comment down because it's stupid.
mr nimblewick @ Aug 31st 2007 12:55PM
"They voted your comment down because it's stupid."
Oh, that makes more sense, actually.
danny. @ Aug 31st 2007 12:09PM
If it is as Joystiq is predicting here, then I think it's a great idea.
I'd probably get sick of it being on my tv constantly pretty quickly, but I dig the concept.
I'd get Endless Ocean if it had a similar feature...
Shagittarius @ Aug 31st 2007 12:14PM
But 90 percent of Wii titles are already screen savers.
mr nimblewick @ Aug 31st 2007 12:34PM
@ shag
If my screensaver said to me "egg-cellent, betta than momma," I would put my fist through the screen.
James @ Aug 31st 2007 12:41PM
The Wii doesn't have screensavers.
Shagittarius @ Aug 31st 2007 12:53PM
you say tomato I say tomato...
Sidepocket @ Aug 31st 2007 1:27PM
..and I say you are fucking stupid and whose mother should have gone with the abortion. :D
danny. @ Aug 31st 2007 1:32PM
I don't agree with what you say sir, but I'll defend to your death the right to say it. Even if it was quite a stretch and didn't really make any sense.
Shagittarius @ Aug 31st 2007 2:07PM
I just feel that the graphics on your TV are just a screen saver while you flail around relentlessly.
I could have just as much fun watching tennis on TV and swinging my arm when the ball gets close to a player. NES tennis was better, it was at least a game.
hvnlysoldr @ Aug 31st 2007 2:07PM
Zoidberg needs a lawyer for eating the flag and Phoenix Wright just got catapulted. Will you take the case?
bm @ Aug 31st 2007 2:42PM
Please guys, don't feed the shaggi. ;)
Shagittarius @ Aug 31st 2007 6:54PM
I'm gonna go have a nice BM.
bm @ Aug 31st 2007 7:22PM
Wow, deja-vu right there.
Shaggi, are you -intentionally- trying to come off as someone with Alzheimer's? If so, forget I said anything. ;)
Word of the street. @ Aug 31st 2007 12:14PM
Okay...
When Loco Roco ps3 was announced I thought it would be this super special awesome Loco roco world in 3D using the Sixaxis not a pretty screensaver a la fl0w.
Really Why Sony keeps denying Loco roco as a main franchise?, is the only franchise they have that people give a damn about(Singstar FTL), I mean is the most original Sony title since ever.
Loco Roco team should go ahead and work for Nintendo.
Fernando Rocker @ Aug 31st 2007 12:30PM
LocoRoco will sell a lot more, at least the double, if the game was on a Nintendo system.
So, yes... LocoRoco team should work for Nintendo.
Ska Oreo @ Aug 31st 2007 12:33PM
Agreed. Loco Roco defiantly makes more sense on the Wii.
James @ Aug 31st 2007 12:42PM
To not bring out LR at least on the DS is silly. To avoid the DS is a very silly mistake.
mr nimblewick @ Aug 31st 2007 12:47PM
"To not bring out LR at least on the DS is silly. To avoid the DS is a very silly mistake."
Isn't the game made by Sony?
cc123 @ Aug 31st 2007 12:51PM
@mr nimblewick
Yes the game is developed by SCE Japan and published by Sony.
@everyone else
You people should go whine to Nintendo to come out with some new franchises instead of redoing the same ones year and year after year. Seems like your starving for them...
Fernando Rocker @ Aug 31st 2007 1:01PM
New franchises? Lets see
Pikmin
Batalion Wars
Big Bran Academy
Brain Age
Wii Sports, Fit and Music
Animal Crossing
Elite Beat Agents
Disaster
Pokemon
Chibi Robo
So, I guess Nintendo doesnt do anything new... they just created a gimmicky remote. Next gen systems will have motion sensing, and pointer, and then you will have to eat your words.
cc123 @ Aug 31st 2007 1:17PM
@Fernando
So as an example of new original IP you use Pokemon?? I guess you missed it but Pokemon is one of the most overused sequel infested series of all time.
Most of the other stuff you listed has already had a few sequels/spinoffs on gamecube/ds.
About the only things in your list that can be considered NEW IPs are WiiSports/Fit/Music and Disaster.
Disaster is missing in action. Not a word on that for a long time.
WiiSports is a tech demo for the Wiimote.
WiiFit (lolz) Hey how about the next time Nintendo gets one of the best game designers that ever lived (Miyamoto) to design something new he actually makes a GAME instead of a glorified aerobics step board. Yeah I know it's crazy to want something like that.
Sidepocket @ Aug 31st 2007 1:27PM
@ cc123
What the fuck defines something as a game VIA genre?
So by your standards all games should be the lame and boring FPS and RPGs that have been putting me to sleep for the last 15 years. Fuck it then I will pass.
cc123 @ Aug 31st 2007 1:41PM
@Sidepocket
What the hell are you talking about???
A new IP is just something we haven't seen before in an existing genre or a new one.
You just pulled that "by your standards" comment out of your ass.
Kazi @ Aug 31st 2007 1:53PM
Wait wait, how many new IPs do you expect? Most of the ones Fernando listed were since GC or DS except for Pokemon and the ones new to the Wii.
If we go by the short time frame you give the only new IP Sony has is uh maybe Lair, I don't know if Factor 5 is considered 2nd party. And the only new IP Microsoft has is Viva Pinata.
cc123 @ Aug 31st 2007 2:10PM
@Kazi
New IPS for the PS3 up to the end of this year: Resistance, Motorstorm, Lair, Uncharted, Heavenly Sword, Folklore those are the ones that come to mind, they also have a bunch of new stuff coming to PSN. God I hate lists...
Anyway I'm not saying there have to be tons of new IPs but it would be nice if for every new generation they came up with a some new properties. Like you mentioned a lot of Fernando's list were new properties for the Gamecube era not the Wii.
samfish @ Aug 31st 2007 12:27PM
Is the super sugary sweet music going to play, too? I like LocoRoco but that would drive me fucking nuts after a while!
vinny @ Aug 31st 2007 12:36PM
wonder how much this crap will cost
Nomi @ Aug 31st 2007 12:39PM
should be cheap since its a non-game game...
Nomi @ Aug 31st 2007 12:38PM
Interesting...hope they offer more screensavers like this.
AlexP @ Aug 31st 2007 1:03PM
Can't possibly beat EVE.
Triforceowner @ Aug 31st 2007 1:03PM
LOL that's so screwed up... yet awesome... and weird...
phattie @ Aug 31st 2007 1:13PM
I use flOw as a screen saver at parties; it autoplays if you leave it alone... it looks great on my 1080p XBR2 LCD panel and people can pick up the controller to play if they want.
I would totally get this.
Of course, leaving your 360 on for a screen saver is not recommended unless you want premature RRoD.
Kazi @ Aug 31st 2007 1:13PM
It would be cool if this were a LOAD screen saver. You know, so you have something to do while games load and you can just buy more, have em on a loop or have one game you play every load screen, what ever.
Maybe I'm the only one that wants this kind of thing. Nintendo's the only one out there that actively tries to completely eliminate pausing the game to load or at least keep it to a minimum.
E.J. @ Aug 31st 2007 1:23PM
This is a cool idea. I've always hated having to wait and do nothing while playing MMOs or waiting to get matched up in a big team battle.
Back when I was playing FFXI on my 360, I had always wished I could play Geometry Wars while waiting for a party.
This would be a nice distraction.
Just_a_guy @ Aug 31st 2007 1:26PM
more proof that the PS3 fell flat on it's back yet again.
AstronautDinosaurFiretruck @ Aug 31st 2007 1:46PM
How exactly?
