Master Chief vs. dinosaur, Halo 3 marketing in Korea

What you will see above, and after the break, are allegedly official Halo 3 marketing videos in Korea. It's, um, different ... like the part where Master Chief punches a dinosaur in the head and the back of his armor falls off. After the break you'll see what happens when someone dressed like Master Chief poses motionless in a Korean mall and springs to life. That's actually more funny than weird, but totally not what we expect from Microsoft marketing.

As we all know, Korea has a very strong gaming culture, although it mostly revolves around the PC market. Console gaming isn't as popular, but maybe videos like this help? Our Korean translator has been missing since the Starcraft II announcement, so we have no idea what's going on in these videos. We can fully accept that Korean culture is very different from US culture -- this point made clear in the video after the break as the guy in the Master Chief costume is standing in the middle of a mall with a gun. We could see something like that sparking an incident on the local news here.

Bizarre. I guess they are. I could have sworn they were fake when they show the giant evil looking rock tower and "MS" (for Microsoft?) is in the subtitles.

The first one does not definitely look official, and I would say the same for the second... but if that Spartan suit isn't official, then wheres it from?

The Part 1 (the one after the break) is hillarious, the second part is just wierd.

Am I the only one who thinks "Master Chief"
is the lamest name for a hero ever?

I've always loved the Halo games, but I've also always thought that 'Master Chief' does sound pretty lame.

"Master Chief" is an homage to Japanese sci-fi, where their heroes are "Space Chief", "Prince of Space", etc.

Um, Master Chief comes from Master Chief Petty Officer in the United Nations Space Command. It's an actual rank from an actual military organization. Being the leading NCO of the Spartan-II's, it seems like a pretty fitting name. Would you have prefered Super Space Ninja?

Master chief isn't that bad but I agree there are better names especially in videogames.

pssssssssssss, its his rank in the space marines, which is an actual rank in the real marines, and his real name is John. Now that is a bad name because of its commonness.

I'm in the Army and can tell you that a rank is pretty much equivelent to having that name. Now if Master Chief's name is somewhere on the uniform (it's not) or if he was surrounded by those he knew more closely (they're dead), you might hear his name more. But lacking that, most soldiers address others by their ranks. So I find nothing wrong at all with just Master Chief. That said, I think Metroid's Samus or even Mario and Luigi and Sonic as the dumbest names ever!

When it went "Yeeeeee hhhhhaaaa" I looked around to see if any thing els was running, caues I chouldn't belive that was for real.

All you guys saying it isn't reminds me of the people who say "Photoshopped!" all the time...

And, man, this would totally sell me on Halo 3, if you could actually punch dinosaurs in the game. It's just too bad I found playing Halo to be quite dull, so I'm just not interested in its sequels.

Hello everyone, Raedien here and by "here" I mean "South Korea." I'm studying abroad for a semester at Yonsei University in Wonju. While visiting some family I noted a "360 World" show on television. My roommate said that the 360 (and consoles in general) are not very popular.

A Halo 3 advertisement is what caught my eye (I was channel surfing at the time) and it was NOT this.

That said, funny game shows, with the sort of shots in the above clips are common. It isn't so much an "official advertisement" as it is fan service.

Basically, you won't see those clips on TV, but the actual commercials would point to the website and from there the episodes would be watched.

The show itself looked pretty forced though.

Anyway, I haven't had time to update it (at all) but I'll be doing my best to blog my stay at www.splitravel.blogspot.com

2) There is an Episode 1. It's the second video in the article (with Master Chief posing in a Korean mall)
3) Yes, Bungie is the developer, but Microsoft owns them, and publishes the game.
4) Once again, they are official (felt like I needed to reinstate this)

That reminds me of a funny incident at my university. During Frosh week, a few students walked into a local shopping mall wearing university track pants, executioner hoods, draping chains over their bodies, and carrying contruction tools. The police were called. University officials spent over a month debating the incident, and concluded that the police were called because the students did not display the university name and logo prominantly enough, and took action by increasing the font size on the style of track pants that the students wore. Honest to God, true story!
