In an interview with ProG, Red Octane pres. Kai Huang confirmed there would not be any online play for the Wii version of Guitar Hero III initially. No time frame is given when the feature would be implemented. He said there will be online play for the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions. Huang says, "There won't be online initially for the Wii, but we are working with Nintendo to see how we can get those features in."
Oh please, that's easy. First you start by talking 12-digit codes with Nintendo and then pinky-swear that there won't be any guitar playing pedophiles on the other end of that game -- to prove this each purchaser of Guitar Hero III who wants to go online will submit two forms of ID and authorize a criminal background check by Nintendo. It's as simple as that.
Update: Red Octane contacted Joystiq to say that Huang was talking about downloadable content to ProG, not online play. There will be no DLC initially for the Wii, but they reaffirm that there will be online play. Of course, our first question was, "How are you implementing that?" They have to check with the developer and get back to us.

What we need is a bold new console company, one that'll make changes, one that takes lemons and crushes them into lemon pulp and markets it as miracle hair grow formula.
I like each of the companies but your completely right, Nintendo needs to say "online is important." Without online I can only get so much out of a game before I've seen it all. Untill they make the jump to Samus porn unlockables in a future prime, I just can't keep going back to it.
Microsoft is great but they need to admit that the 360 is basically a bunch of jewels, pretty jewels, but they're all taped together with duck tape. It's so poorly made that I don't have a single friend who doesn't have a problem with their 360.
Sony needs to realize that they're complete jackasses who don't have an original thought, but Final Fantasy, and MGS is too good to pass up. I'm sorry but sony is just so goddamn annoying with their on the spot "oh and by the way we just saw Nintendo is doing this right, WELL GUESS WHAT! Upcoming patch we got the same exact thing, isn't that crazy and original". But it works.

Sure the point is made, but at the expense of butchering the English language.

At this rate, the Wii's online service is gonna get its ass kicked by someone else on its platform, just like what Disney/Buena Vista Games is gonna do with the DS'. (gamer profiles and such)

LOL you people are so pathetic. OF COURSE online mode is a good thing. Wii seems like a good system and all, but their online strategy is just ridiculous. It's just like the DS: it's all good now, but imagine all the great games that could benefit from online modes if it was implemented before (example: Advance Wars DS). Nintendo should be allowing 3rd parties to do it NOW, not in a year. Also, frieds code are not like adding screen names: you have one for each game in the DS and their are clearly hard to remember than a GamerTag (that you also have available in the internet, a thing Nintendo does not allow you to do).
Nintendo fanboys always get pissed when someone say Nintendo systems are kiddie, but if this type of online strategy is no kiddie oriented, I don't know what is.

If it were really kiddie-oriented, it would be a LOT simpler. Friend codes require a masters in quantum physics, at LEAST.

Wait, isn't the Wii version of this game cheaper with the same amount of songs and options? And isn't the Wii version the only guitar that has a speaker and rumble in it because the Wii remote is embeded into it?
They said no online "Initially" as in they probably didn't get a chance complete the online in time to launch with the others so they're working with Nintendo to get it added.
Other than the minor loss of online at first, I think I'm gonna be picking up the Wii version.

I'll end up getting the 360 version, game only, because I'll have just plunked down 250 dollars for a full rock band set.

Two forms of ID and a background check? I don't know about that, better add on a chemical castration just to be on the safe side.

I think Nintendo must hate online play so much that they're going to try and destroy the internets!

mr nimblewick... how does my post constitute me being "a dick with no sense of humor".
Seeing as to how the original poster wasn't trying to be humorous, and seeing as to how my reply was to him and not you, it seems to me like you're just a bitter little girl with her panties caught in a bunch because you're not liking what I'm saying.

I forget what the post was about. But don't troll me for having my opinion. Or something. No really, what was being discussed?
I probably thought that writing "a dick with no sense of humor" was funny. I probably framed it in some clever way. If you ever think that what I am saying is serious, just take a step back and breathe. We're all just having fun here to make the day pass.

I think Joystiq should go the deadspin.com route and allow access to comment by invite-only.
I could live without my ability to comment if the majority of what I read was relevant to the article and not another PS3 vs Wii vs 360 rant, which seems to be the case with EVERY joystiq article.

Seriously Nintendo, you suck online.
I think pedophiles should be castrated then killed violently, but stopping online play won't stop them.
You guys suck SO hard its unbelievable.
If this was a sucking contest even the judges would be slack-jawed in amasement at your suckability.
I actually got Mario Strikers FOR FREE. But the online play sucked so deeply that I took it back to the store and got my money back. This from the guy who never sells or trades a game, ever! I even held unto a copy of Home Alone.
You want to play online? sure! But you can't choose who you want to play against; not unless you already know them.
What? ok, whatever.
You liked playing against that guy? too bad, you'll probably never see him again.
No, you can't speak to him, he might be a pedophile. No you can't get his friend-code from the game.
No, no no no no.

Hmmm...I guess im in the minority...I come to joystiq because of well written articles and breaking gaming news...don't get me wrong..flame wars are funny at times but there's always a PS3 vs Wii vs 360 rant....then there's the obligatory post by someone who says all of them have their strengths and their weaknesses....then another post talking about how he's talking out of his ass.... :)

I was too distraught from the initial blow of the suckiness.
Maybe I'll get it again a few years down the line on eBay or something.
(knowing Nintendo they would have probably ended the server because of a few shady-looking Mii characters)

I've said it before. It isn't about harassment or solicitation, Nintendo is just lazy as hell when it comes to online play. Its not like simple Parental Control implementations could protect those who feel their children need such protection

considering there isn't any A.I. to be replaced by a human for online play, i don't see why guitar hero would need it

All the systems will move to some kind of friend codes the first time a kid gets molested through xbox live or sony's service. It will be on Fox news nonstop and changes will be demanded.

I have nothing against the system, but Nintendo's refusal to let devs use online gaming that doesn't require their stupid game-specific friend codes will hurt this title.
You'd think they would listen to their userbase. Lots of people I know just don't like the friends code system. They should've fixed this by now, but they just don't really care at all.
(Again, I have nothing against Nintendo or the Wii. But this stupid Friends Code thing's gotta go.)

Nintendo gets a free pass on their online "plan". It's non-existant minus one or two games. Oh wait, I can vote on random this or that polls, GREAT!
How is this not a complete let down for fans ?
If this were Microsoft or Sony, we'd never hear the end of it.
But Nintendo not having any real online plans is A-Ok.

If you own a Wii or DS and you are against friend codes, send an email to Nintendo stating your position. Bitching about it here does nothing, but if enough people write Nintendo we could see some change.
Tell it to Nintendo!
