Screw analogies. They are pointless, subjective, and confusing. Everyone's analogy is going to play favorites - we already know where the consoles stand, so what's it matter who thinks the Wii is a god-send, the Wii is a turd, the PS3 is a miracle-waiting-to-happen or the PS3 is the death of a company?

The Wii is a Mustang - fun and in the hands of many.
The 360 is a Ferrari - fun and in the hands of a smaller group.
The PS3 is a Ferrari driven by a Gizmondo executive.

wii is definitely like a civic, you know a bunch of ppl have it, and everyone who has it likes it, but people who can afford better get better and never even considered a civic in the first place.

360 is like a prius, it's a pretty good car, but people aren't very sure about buying it. You would buy it if you were in the market for a car. It's pretty popular and started off selling pretty well when the new model arrived (first xbox would be the really ugly 1st gen prius's), but not THAT popular. And if you have one, you love it but you gotta change that battery every 5 years cuz it ends up dying on you (lets just pretend thats the case).

PS3 is like an SUV in the streets of London, you'd only get it because you think you're cool and you like to have something that most other people don't have. But once you get it, you realize you made a mistake and tend to not use it as much to get around town. And people generally make fun of you for having it because it's big and hard to maneuver in the small street, which means it does what other cars do (transports you) but just not as well in that particular market. BUT, you can do a lot of other things with an SUV, like fill it up with a lot of things cuz theyre enough space to do so, and take it off-roading, which is nice but you probably wont do it that often.

I predict this post will have hilarious comments.

Wii: Chicken fingers: fun finger food, usually targetted to kids, but tasty to all
360: Double Bacon Cheeseburger with all the fixins. There is a 1 in 30 chance it will be overcooked.
PS3: Foie Gras, delicious and expensive, it's hard to eat knowing it came from torturing developers

1 in 30? try at least 1 in 3.

And going back to a few comments back, I noticed that Kotaku is less biased when it comes to certain game companies and Joystiq seems to post everything Kotaku post, just a few minutes to a few hours later. I read both, so I am just saying.

Have you seen the charts on how much energy each console consumes? The Prius and two Hummers are the best analogies.

I don't know about you guys, but I would pay more for a Wii than a PS3. To me it's not a matter of cost, but a matter of perceived value. I think that through the next 5 years I can get more fun out of owning a Wii, and thus it is more valuable to me. So the way I see it, this is like comparing an underpriced jetpack with an overpriced pogostick.

I would pay a dollar a day to play the Wii. Assuming a shortened lifecycle of four years, that's $1460. My reserve price is fairly high, so I love getting the consumer surplus of $1210. I get lot's of utility from the Wii.

Dude, you got that backwards. Its Mario who's always busting in and ruining bowsers parties. Think about it. In Sunshine, he's just hanging out at the hot tub with his kid and the princess, having a good time and mario shows up and dumps him into the lava.

In Mario World, bowser's totally got dance music going in his castle, he's flying around in a smileyface hovercraft making sure all the guests are happy. He's even got a disco ball for those wild dance floor nights! Mario shows up, breaks his mechakoopas, breaks his hovercraft, and steals Peach back.

Heads up Mario! She wasn't ever kidnapped to begin with! She's just tired of your lazy ass and decided to go hang with bowser and his crew, because they're way cooler than you. When was the last time mario threw a party that didn't involve rolling dice and moving pieces. Lame!

Oh, and Wii vs 360 vs PS3 is like a game console vs a media center vs a wannabe PC.

Funny how the Nintendo guy couldn't come up with an analogy comparison that didn't involve making the other two competitors seem like "bad guys". I think Kyle's spoofing of their analogy was spot on. The Nintendo guy should have just said "our awesome thing versus the competition that are poopie heads" or something instead of trying to take a swing at the other companies and mask it with some neutral commenting afterward.

Oddly enough though, the Wii seems like it fits the hybrid thing perfectly:
-won't last long
-good for the environment(wii supposedly very green)
-hardly any horsepower for how much it costs
-good concept, but still doesn't really pay attention to the future much(still relies on nonrenewable energy and wii putting all it's eggs in one waggle basket)
-a non-existant online service HEYO (let the burying of this comment begin!)

Anyone watch HBO's Entourage? It breaks down like this:

Wii = Vince, cause, well, everybody likes Vince

360 = Ari Gold. Arrogant and obnoxious (red ring of death), yet has enough power and smarts to become popular with a sizable group

PS3 = Johnny Drama. Nobody likes him, nobody wants him, yet he pretends like everything he does is the shit. Lots of untapped potential; he's finding himself.

The analogy offered by Nintendo's rep was far more accurate, since, contrary to your collective inability to read, it was not meant to refer primarily to the difference in price between the consoles, but more the difference in image and, I would say, maturity.
Chrome rims are not a sign of quality or of a warranted higher price, but simply a matter of immature fantasy. Yes, only a young guy just stupid enough to be duped by the fantasies he's seen in music videos would purchase such a thing, just as the 'hardcore gamers' that frequent this site and chide the Wii for being too kiddy and not pushing hi-def technology are primarily immature, teens-20ish guys that would likely also put more thought into the power of their vehicle's engine than any other feature, even though they will rarely ever have any real need for powerful acceleration in their day-to-day driving and could do far better to go for features that actually have an impact on the driving experience.
The Wii, contrary to the wet dreams of all the misguided on this board, is actually the most mature system of the three, in that it doesn't try to be 'hardcore' with a name like XBOX or numbers that are meant to convey processing power as if it's horsepower. At its best, it produces enjoyable, intuitive gaming experiences that do not require the abolition of an adult social life and career.
Unfortunately, thanks to many of the people I've seen on sites such as this one, the word 'gamer' is now something I'd be ashamed of being associated with, since it has been reduced to the marketing equivalent of chrome rims.

Wow, good write, bravo. The definition of a hardcore gamer is so skewed and opinionated anymore that it's all over the place. Before the Wii the hardcore gamer was the gamer that didn't care about the graphics, the amount of violence or how many enemies there were on the screen at a time. It was all about the gameplay, the meta game, the gaming experience.

People who played GTA over ICO and Okami were the casuals. People who picked up Psychonauts because it was a damn good game were the hardcore gamers. People who played through and beat Ninja Gaiden then beat it again on a harder difficulty were the hardcore gamers. People that goto EVO tournaments and compete were hardcore gamers. People who could beat Zelda: OOT and MM with out looking at an FAQ or strategy guide were hardcore gamers. People who could get a headshot no matter where their enemy is in Counter Strike with out hacks were hardcore gamers. People that could survive in Tetris infinitely were the hardcore gamers. People who spent most of their free time perfecting their micromanagement in Real Time Strategies were hardcore gamers. People that know their favorite developer's group name and several of their designers were the hardcore gamers. People who loved Fire Emblem before Smash Bros Melee were hardcore gamers. People who looked deeper into games than genre, graphics, and 'maturity' were the hardcore gamers.

Now people think they're hardcore because they believe it's all about graphics and how high the game's ESRB is. I like to separate the casuals in two groups the playstation casuals and the popcap casuals. All that needs to be done now is to make the playstation casuals realize they're still a casual audience.

If there were more than 1 good game on the Wii then I could get behind your argument.

Hardcore gamers are as you described, but they hardly get fooled by gimmiky motion controls and 5 year old graphics. Its still all about the gaming for the hardcore, thats why we don't like the Wii.

Let me put it this way, there's no real "hardcore" titles. There's simply masterpieces and the hardcore scene of games. Not to say GTA wasn't a brilliant game, but ICO and Okami didn't get the attention they deserved. Psychonauts definitely didn't get the attention it deserved.
