How do you renew flagging interest in an MMORPG, especially when there's clearly another top dog? For MMORPG granddaddy Everquest, part of the solution (they hope) comes in the form of a new, digital collectable card game called Legends of Norrath: Oathbound. The first of what Sony says will be a series, Oathbound features 375 cards in 55-card starter decks for $9.99 and 15-card booster packs for $2.99.
The game is playable from EQ I or II, thought a stand-alone client is due for free on Sept. 12. You can test your skills (and decks) against others in the Tournament and Casual lobbies that have been set up or you can play against the AI. This isn't necessarily the sort of thing that would make us cheat on WoW, but if you're still a Norrath denizen, it sounds like this would certainly beat /gems.

I found the /gems reference rather amusing (/gems was an EQ1 Dr. Mario ripoff using spell casting icons)

I actually think it's a decent idea-- if I could play the WoW CCG within WoW while waiting for BGs or a group, that'd be pretty sweet.
Sure, maybe it's a band-aid over the design flaw of having to wait for a BG, but at least it's a Spongebob Squarepants band-aid. Or something.

EQ2 gets a lot of trash from people who haven't played it, which is not really fair since it is actually one of the best MMOs I have played. As for this card game, everyone got one free Starter deck and booster packs and starter decks have been added as drops from monster kills, which is sweet if someone wants to play without spending any extra money on it. I already got a Starter Deck drop so that was pretty cool. For people who want to be more competitive, you can purchase more cards online.

You know, the game that directly inspired/molded World of Warcraft? Yeah, that thing. The game who's gameplay and addictiveness dwarfs Warcraft? The only thing that Warcraft has going for it is it's casual friendly, which makes it everyone's social whore. It's the Wii of MMOs, making gaming cool and easy.
Fuck the Wii. Fuck Warcraft. You're destroying a hobby that's better left away from the masses. Like how everyone came on board Napster and blew it up into this nationwide epidemic years after I was using it and canned it. Then Kazaa. Then you have MySpace making everyone think they can program Java, HTML and PERL.
I miss the good ol' days. EverQuest being top dog included.

Yeah, but what Inspired EQ? UO? Meridian? The Thousands of MUDs before them? Tolkien?

That actually would be a good idea. I spent so much time waiting for mana when I was playing everquest, the game is half downtime anyway, might as well have the downtime be fun as well. This is where all the other MMO people say the NEW games don't have the down time. AHHH good old gems, that does take me back.
