As children, the entirety of what we knew about the game of basketball was gleaned from
NBA Jam and
Slam Dunk Ernest. As such, you can imagine our confusion when we played the new demo for
NBA Live 08 now "hooping it up" as the kids say, on Xbox Live. We asked aloud, why is our head so small? Why does the ball never catch flame? Where is the angel version of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar bearing a pair of magical sneakers?
Sadly,
NBA Live 08 seems to have little to do with
real basketball, seeming to focus on "passing" and "shooting" mechanics rather than "fly towards the hoop for a dunk while making a sandwich in mid-air" mechanics. We hope you can still find some redeeming qualities.

Joystiq, NBA Live may not have the fire streaming from the basketball or the over the top flashy dunks but it still is to this date a very unrealistic basketball sim. How is it possible that every one can dunk or perform a crossover? You can basically dunk from the arc if you have Lebron or Kobe. NBA Live is trash. I am looking forward to NBA2k8, whenever that comes out.

This guys absolutely right. NBA Live has been terrible the last few years, the last one I enjoyed playing was 2005.
NBA 2k7 was the greatest basketball game I've ever played. I spent so long playing that game, and that was before I discovered the greatness of online leagues. I was in a 82 game, 12 minute quarter sim league, and it was such a great online experience. 2K's online site for their leagues/tournys were just plain awesome and added so much to the already great game. I can't wait for 2k8.
I fear though, with Halo 3, Orange Box, Mass Effect, Assassin's Creed and all the other games I have to play, it'll be hard to find time for it.

Youre telling me, 2K7 on 360 was not only one of the best sports games out, it was one of the best games out, and still is. It had a freakin story mode for crying out loud. Hell, Im gonna go play that beast right now.

Y2K doesn't hold a candle to NBA '08. The live updates alone put it on a pedestal.
They had a nationwide contest where they interviewed people about the NBA. My video's on there. Check it out! I'm next to a set of nuns!
