Nintendo says Metroid Dread is dead, at least as 2D

Remember those in-game references from Metroid Prime 3 hinting at the rumored 2D Metroid Dread's near-completion status? Turns out the joke's on us.Speaking to CVG, Nintendo has confirmed that the company "is not making the 2D Metroid at this point in time." Metroid Dread for DS showed up on a Nintendo pre-E3 list in 2005 but never materialized after that. The wording does leave room for a three-dimensional title, but instead of getting our hopes up, we're just going to call this one dead.

Metroid Deluxe was suppose to be a remake of Metroid II in the same vein that Super Mario Bros and Zelda Link's Awakening were given Deluxe GBC versions.

Well said. Anything on the GBA or DS that makes heavy use of the shoulder buttons just kills my poor hands. Metroid Fusion was a seriously painful experience (and not just because it practically walked you through the whole game.)

Before you all fall in despair, I may remind you this info come from Nintendo Europe. Those are the guy who claimed there was no other Nintendo DS in project and that nobody was working on such a thing the day right before the DSLite was announced. (I am not making that up, this is literally what happened).
This is, to that date, their worst deed, but Nintendo Europe is Sadly know to be the less reliable source of information, especially concerning project in the work outside of Europe. Remember those guys are just distributor and there is no development team on the old continent. Much of what they say has been regularly contradicted.
And personally, I will take any information coming from them in the most suspicious way.

I haven't played Prime 3 yet.
2D Metroids are brilliant. I'm waiting for Super Metroid to get released on the VC, and I can't get into 1. But I just bought 2 for the GB and it's ruddy brilliant. I even liked Fusion. Zero Mission blew me away. It's just so replayable.

As for the people asking for a Metroid 2 remake, there was never one for GBA, but there was one for GameBoy Color (in the vein of Link's Awakening DX) that got scrapped.
But a new version of II would be nice someday.

Yea, 2 is great because it just throws you right in there, and seems to be a much shorter adventure than 1.
Perhaps it means a 'proper sequel' as in Mario Galaxy to 64, since they're saying the one inbetween wasn't that great?

I'd like some proof that Dread was ever on a Nintendo list. As far as I know, the project was announced to be in the works by GameInformer, then announced to be scrapped by GameInformer.
As far as I know, Nintendo never mentioned anything about Dread. Can someone prove otherwise?

Wow, this is the first forum I've seen that doesn't have some jack-a telling everybody how great the PeeS3 is and that Nintendo is weak. Double Awesome. Metroid is the shizzee though.
