Gamespot reports that Valve's Doug Lombardi confirmed to them the PS3 version of über-value The Orange Box will be delayed on PS3 by "a couple weeks." The PC and Xbox 360 versions will move forward with their Oct. 9 release. Wonder if those poor Valve employees still won't be able to play BioShock until the PS3 version is done too. Valve overlords, have a heart and let them play, everyone seems to be getting stuck on these delays -- for real, no joke.
Per the usual of all these PS3 delay announcements, Valve would not identify the reason for the delay, the game is being ported by EA. Lombardi also wouldn't talk about a specific date, he merely let the "couple weeks" quote float out there. Hopefully Sony can craft some message to explain these delays away, maybe it'll be the first memo by Karraker's replacment.

That's what I thought right away...a few weeks??? Must be Blu-Ray...
BUT, do games HAVE to come on Blu-Ray on the PS3?? It is capable of reading and playing back standard DVDs...seem pretty wasteful to blow the extra dev cost to put the game on Blu-Ray when it's not necessary.

Your post is jokes, right?
Of course blu-ray is not needed, the 360 is doing fine without it. BR is for movies and lazy devs who don't want to compress textures or audio. Enjoy another delayed game PS3 fans! You gotta admit it's tiring eh? ahahahahahaa

Yes they do, or sony would not be able to claim that blue ray was needed.

Not about stamping blu-ray discs. They could just wait until they have supplies and ship them together.
And the point about is Blu-ray needed was about why can't they ship it on DVDs, not whether the tech is needed.
And a couple weeks is vague enough that it could be six to twelve weeks for all we know. It is a programming issues, not a production issue. I would pretty much bet my xbox360 on it.

Its delayed because the PS3 has "potential" and they want to use all that "potential" in Half Life...

This is madness!
No, quite seriously, this seems to be getting a bit out of hand, these delays aren't gonna help the PS3 much unless the developers are trying to make look/play the best, or just catching up with 360 development.

Only a couple of weeks? this shows it's just marketing if you ask me. It looks like they've staggered the release with favouritism given to 360 / PC.
Why not hold back all versions, so they can be released at the same time, if it's only a couple of weeks.

Yep. I'm thinking c-o-n-spiracy here, as well. Not saying EA's the only publisher delaying stuff on PS3, but they seem to be doing it most frequently. Hell, even in their commercials, it's X360 depicted at the end... not PS3/Wii. Add in their own high end employee making the jump to M$ and hey... bring on those c-theories.

Like they did with GTA4....yeaa not many companys want too sit on all versions if they are finished..shit we all heard the excuses about blu-ray being needed for GTA4 but now im sure this is proof what the real problem was that delayed the game.

Is EA porting both the 360 and PS3 version or is it just the PS3 version? Because they have gone on the record as saying that as the develepment of a game nears compleation they do move manpower over to the 360 game.

Ouch baby, real ouch. I hope Sony or a dev team explains why so many games are getting delayed for the PS3. I actually feel sorry for the people who only own a PS3 and can't play HL2 on their computer. I mean sure its only a couple of weeks, but in those few weeks they'll have to deal with 360/PC gamers telling them how awesome the game is until until they reach insanity.

I know, right? I mean, it's maddening when this game isn't like currently available for PC or anything for under $20 nowadays to tide them over. That's just crazy talk.

That tells me that you are on the Wii because Xbox 360 is DEFINITELY not next-gen. DVD, HDMI 1.2, no bluetooth, 30% failure rate. Yeah, that sounds like next gen to me alright.

how can hotnutz say the 360 is not "next gen"? great games. great user interface. great controllers. gfx that at worst is on a par with ps3. hdmi. can now output 1080p.
all i seem to see are adverts claiming that ps3 is the ultimate machine. assasin's creed "looks" worse than its 360 counterpart. and i remember seeing that game first on ps3, where i was led to believe it was the lead platform. seeing as it was ps3 exclusive.
there are huge problems with HL-2. low fps, glitches and a large delay of "a couple of weeks".
not trying to be a fanboy but it's hard not to sound like one. i will be getting a ps3 at some point but only when i consider it to be a viable investment. when there's something worth playing.
so i guess "true next gen" means next week, next month, next year. "POTENTIAL". when?
i'm sorry about the rant as this probably isn't the place to do so, but i felt the need to reply to hotnutz' bollocks about 360 not being next gen.

ith only a two week delay, that sounds likely. After all, I have NEVER heard of a full fledged bughunt in under two weeks.

Well, they did something similar to a multiweek bug hunt with Lair (pushed from Aug 14th to Sept 4th). But that just goes to show why it's a bad idea. It always raises red flags when developers have short delays. You need months not weeks to fix a broken game (see GTA). However Orange Box is a multiplatform game, and I doubt their doing bug hunts for one version at this stage.

Sorry guys, there's no conspiracy about MS paying off publishers to delay games, there's no problems with the PS3 version of games. It's just the pressing process, which seems to be different from DVD pressing processes and as a result there's the odd 2 week delay when publishers don't take into account the 2 week delay they'll have and put up a peliminary release/fall behind schedual and can't keep the PS3 release BECAUSE of this 2 week delay.
You can keep thinking your fanboy conspiracies, but don't be stupid and believe in them enough to post them here.

That's all kinds of stupid!
"Jimmy, we've been working on this game for a year. Did you remember to plan a 2 week buffer for pressing BR discs for PS3?"
What's the problem? They should only need to make 200,000 copies for PS3. But they'll need 3 times that for the 360's awesome install base.

I kinda doubt that Valve will take weeks and weeks to add cut scenes and multilingual audio to the PS3 version and leave it out of the 360 version. Their going to be the exact same versions with cut scenes done with in game engines and just english, dumbass.

As a developer, if you sell a game on the 360 or PC, you get a bigger cut. Devs therefore stagger their release to try to get the multiconsole owners to purchase the version that nets the developer/publisher more profit.
In the case of UT3 and possibly Haze, the PS3 version is leading by quite some time. This is for a different reason. The PC and 360 fall lineups are very crowded compared to the PS3. UT3 could very well be the PS3's biggest hit this Fall, while it would have went relatively unnoticed on other platforms.
These decisions are made to maximize profit. They have nothing really to do with the PS3's complexity and difficulty to program for, which is sometimes termed as its potential.
