Square Enix President Yoichi Wada publicly stated that Sony needs to find a solid marketing strategy with the PS3 and stick with it. According to Reuters, when Nintendo became one of Japan's top 10 companies in June, they actually bumped Sony off the list. Wada told reporters, "Sony first unveiled the PS3 as a mighty home electronics product. Then, after some badgering from game companies, it shifted the position of the console closer to a game machine ... (the future of the PS3) would be tough if its marketing strategy is not straightened up."
With the competition in Japan being between the Wii and PS3, Sony's total decimation in the market isn't sitting well with third-party publishers that have major costly titles set up for the PS3 -- like Square Enix and Final Fantasy XIII. Big budget games with low install base consoles is a problem for the bottom line. Konami has said as much with Metal Gear Solid 4. Remember the Xbox 360 is a Japanese afterthought, so it really doesn't play into their equations when talking about their own country. The PS3 may be doing better, but it's still not doing well.

didn't they do that with that extra ram attatchment for the 64? man that was annoying... actually, come to think of it, they tried that n64 DD thing with the 64 in japan too. Personally, I don't think it works... but I'm betting there will be some kind of harddrive attatchment or support at some point for the wii... else we're just gonna have to keep filling those SD cards with VC games =o

I find it humerous that Square Enix seems to always be criticising Sony strategy. Shut up and publish a new PS3 game already.

Or they may be diverting resources to the DS. (Technically true since the next DQ is heading there)

tpnmvz, I don't know about you, but CG is still expensive and difficult to make. Don't discount the 70% CG, even if it is 70% CG.

By the time SE finishes that game Sony will have a significant larger install base. The problem is that SE thought the PS3 would blow everything out the water like the PS2 did. Silly SE. I would still like to see it on 360 though even if it's months after.

Or maybe they started production LONG before this whole thing started. (I'm talking before XBox 360 was released to the market) With that time frame, it's a little difficult to predict anything.

Sony's fall lineup is abysmal, compared to the competition. The AAA playstation titles to look forward to are FF13 and MGS4. One has been put on hold indefinitely, and the other may eventually get a 360 port. This is not good news for sony.

I disagree with that statment. The PS3 still has a good line-up this holiday w/ UT3 w/kb support & mods, Haze, Uncharted, Time Crisis 4/Guncon and etc. The PS3 hasnt been out a year and people trying to count Sony out. Its not right. When the 360 launched, it had nothing but CoD2 and Gears the next year and wasnt getting criticized like this and they had/have systems crashing. People shouldnt be so tough on Sony cause the war is still early. Sony has a reasonable line-up ending this year and next year they will be better. What Sony needs to do is get the price strategy fixed and keep 1 SKU. They should also explain the formats it supports and what it does like the WiFi, Bluetooth, web-browers/free online, and uses laptop HDDs and those ripoffs like M$(they are expensive). That info needs to be on TV and on the damn box. Its almost 2008 and most people aren't technology savvy like us and stuff has to be simplied for the consumer. If Sony gets their stuff 2gether, everything should work out.

Abysmal is a little harsh.
R&C, uncharted, UT3, haze all look great and that excludes the multiplatform games.

One other reason nobody ever mentions, maybe because it's not a "fair" reason is the fact that the ps3 can't, for what i know, be hacked and made to play "back up"/piracy games until we all get ahold of some kind of blue ray disc writer. Yeah, it's illegal, i know, but either you like it or not, LOTS of people, at least here in Spain, buy a console only if they know they can play games for free, that's why the PS2, the DS and the PSP are selling so well here. I'm not saying that companies do or have to build their strategies based on that, or not, but it's defenitely something that affects console sales to a large number of potential buyers, mostly non-hardcore gamers. People are cheap, you know.
So, in the end, i think the ps3's fate will be in some way defined by the blue ray's success, and that's not a good thing because right now the thing's really split up between bd and hd-dvd and there's a lot of uncertainty in the market, something the xbox360 people don't care about (cause really, having games on multiple dvds isn't that big of a deal IMO).
So, basically, what i'm trying to say is that sony is pretty screwed and Square Enix and other game producers are going to jump out from it like it's a sinking ship on fire.

No, because a "definate" list doesn't exist. However, a "definite" one does.

Its mostly the 360 lineup that kills the PS3. Anybody else find it funny that the 360 has more JRPGs than the PS3 does?

Crono, you have Metroid Prime : Corruption yet?
Play Bioshock first otherwise you will be saying to yourself ... "Damn, I wish Bioshock had Metroid type controls" I wish all FPS could use MP3 controls...It's hard to go back to Dual Analog after playing either MP3 or Resident Evil 4 : Wii Edition.

Their marketing certainly needs to straighten up in more ways than one. Recently they've been showing a PSP commercial where a guy screams "CLUSTER BOMB" several times on an airplane, which in real life would get you arrested.

The problem isn't the games. It's just 1 thing.
The freaking price. $ 600 is way to expensive regardless of what it has.
Until Sony cuts the price to $ 400 or less they'll have the same problem period.

why cant sony release a $400 or $350 model w/o bluray or the other bells and whistles, one that just plays ps2 and ps3 games? That would probably help sony out.

they could copy them to a few dvd-9's, like blue dragon did.
