1UP previews Silent Hill V, shows in-game footage
It's in the hands of an American team, and we're interested in the way they're going with it. We do wonder if it will be possible to still enjoy the real-time disintegration effects and more responsive combat if we watch the game through a slit between our index and middle finger with wads of cotton in our ears. Here's hoping.

I'm now doing the happy, happy, joy, joy dance!
This clip made me so happy, I'm even putting up with this shitty comment system to post how happy I am!

Finally, a proper sequel to SH2! I'm glad they're finally updating the series' weak gameplay. I don't care what anyone says, SH had shitty gameplay since day one, and it hardly contributed to making the game scary. (For me it was mostly the darkness and the audio.)
Mr. Scolex @ Sep 10th 2007 11:18AM
After the shitty trailer, I had my doubts, but the footage presented in this clip has wholy made me decide that I need 360, if for nothing else than to play this game.
bm @ Sep 10th 2007 11:26AM
Game looks good, and there is no question that I'll be picking it up, but does anyone else think the enemies look a bit too... clean? This from looking at both the trailer and the screenshots in the recent EGM (I believe it was) article.
MariosInferno @ Sep 10th 2007 11:38AM
/methinks Alan Wake will be superior.....
Just my opinion, but I think Silent Hill is just running it's course. And, it's going to need that rejuvenation that Resident Evil got...because...well, Silent Hill 4 just should never have been. Prove me wrong.
Word of the street. @ Sep 10th 2007 2:04PM
SH4 sucked especially after the awesomeness that was SH:3.
What the hell with Silent hill 4?, I mean look at the enemies there was the evil asparagus, the wheelchairs of doom, the flying Hobos and the giant face? The only enemies missing were the evil eggplants, Le quack and Catz and there you have it folks Courage the cowardly Dog: The videogame.
IMO Alan wake reminds me of Alone in the Dark: A new Nightmare more than Silent hill.
elmersglue @ Sep 10th 2007 11:40AM
the nurse character's boobs are way too big to seem scary. I didn't know getting the player turned on was in the equation of scaring them.
doomcloud @ Sep 10th 2007 12:03PM
i was just going to ask, is it wrong to get turned on by the faceless nurses?
hvnlysoldr @ Sep 10th 2007 12:10PM
One of the premises of Silent Hill II was the protagonist's sexual frustrations with his wife. So yes it does play a part...
I started playing RE4 Wii and I have to say I haven't thrown up yet. Just hard to change aiming.
The Boo @ Sep 10th 2007 2:37PM
I was thinking, "Would I, could I with a paper bag?" But then you've got to figure there are probably sharp pointy teeth behind those lips... or a tentacle.
richie579 @ Sep 10th 2007 11:48AM
MariosInferno is right....Silent Hill 4 was being developed as another game before they decided to throw it in the SH universe.....damn the combat on that was terrible....I hope this one's the tits cuz I luv me some Silent Hill....1-3 that is....
eldee @ Sep 10th 2007 12:00PM
Let's hope the whites can do a good job. Seriously.. the interviewer is pretty retarded. Who generalizes Americans as "the whites" anyway? Guy must live deeep in the burbs.
Jenova @ Sep 10th 2007 12:18PM
Cerixus, I'm right there with you buddy, bloody brilliant. These guys know what they're doing.
Carlos @ Sep 10th 2007 12:41PM
i hate that Ryan guy from the 1up, even though he seems to like faith no more
Cuddlefish @ Sep 10th 2007 1:06PM
To the guy in the video with the black shirt and glasses: Stop sending me spam!
Metro Mapper @ Sep 10th 2007 1:17PM
I like how dude's shirt says 'cialis.'
David @ Sep 10th 2007 1:22PM
Sure looks like Silent Hill, in a negative and positive sense. I'm kinda fed up with the rust-brown hell-plane. "The Room" was interesting in that aspect, it didn't feel as generic as the other ones, I could've spent more time in that empty, creepy apartment. And fighting mannequins is getting pretty tiresome. Just give me a handful of monsters that I can't kill, that always freaks me out... Oh, also, 1UP sux.
Mr. P @ Sep 10th 2007 1:52PM
Finally, a proper sequel to SH2. When I saw the debut trailer and screenshot, I was worried, but seeing this footage really gave me faith in the new developer. And to top things off, they're finally updating the series' weak gameplay. I don't care what anyone says, SH has had shitty gameplay since day one, and it hardly contributed to making the game scary. (For me it was mostly the darkness and the audio.)

Can we please stop using GameVideos until they can get their flash player to work with Opera, like EVERY other flash player out there has managed to do.
Orionsaint @ Sep 10th 2007 2:10PM
Honestly it looks like a PS2 game. Is that next gen?
Jonah Falcon @ Sep 10th 2007 3:53PM
Should mention the video is in conjunction with the EGM cover story currently on stands now.
LaughingTarget @ Sep 10th 2007 5:09PM
The only thing I'm concerned with is the graphics are just too good for the way this series should be. Like any film billed as horror, the more we see the adversary, the less afraid we are of them. This is one of those series that I think has been done a disservice by offering up stronger hardware. Nothing is more frightening than that you cannot see or make out correctly. The original Silent Hill, bar none, had the best atmosphere. The rest may have improved on the gameplay and had more interesting puzzles, but they lost the visual mood moving to more powerful hardware.
Tomas L. Martin @ Sep 10th 2007 5:49PM
the guy at the start of the video looks just like David Beckham.
Einhanderkiller @ Sep 10th 2007 6:47PM
I never really liked how these 1UP videos are presented.
Vagrant Pistol @ Sep 10th 2007 7:09PM
It looks good but too clean. It may be kool to dodge and have better gun control, but that was a huge part of what Silent Hill is. Take a normal average Joe and you would expect that person to shoot bad and not swing properly. Maybe they missed that part. Dirty the enemies more, and make the girl boobies smaller.
phhowell @ Sep 10th 2007 8:57PM
Two concerns.
One: The protagonist looks exactly like David Beckham.
Two: This doesn't look as technically proficient as it should. I'm guessing/hoping that this is a very early build as this doesn't look much better than SH3. Believe me, I'm more than happy to be wrong on this as I'm a huge SH fan.
The iffy: Bosses inspired by Zelda. The bosses in SH were awesome because they were unique and utterly terrifying. You had no idea what to expect from a boss. Making it too much like Zelda and advertising it as such will only take you out of the experience. Then again, imitation is the best form of flattery. Again, I hope I'm wrong on this.
josearoldan @ Sep 11th 2007 9:36AM
Finally I was starting to miss this series :) Glad a new one is coming around
Marie @ Sep 11th 2007 6:49PM
Uhh...The SH bosses have always been inspired by Zelda. I think they meant that they wanted a larger scale kind of boss that takes a little more solving to it (e.g. This one can't be killed by a gun -- what do I do?). In fact, most games' bosses are "inspired" by Zelda bosses.
I do agree, however, that it would be nice if they kept them a little more ambiguous, like James' first encounter with Pyramid head trapped in the stairwell (where the way to "win" the battle is to not get hit until Pyramid Head is summoned away), where a player must wonder, "why would a game have a boss you can't defeat? ...is this like other games? Can I even call it one?"
I think the nurses are relevant because they not only accentuated James' sexual deviations in two, but in the first game, they showed a perverted sense of "hospital" and "care" shown toward Alessa/Cheryl in 1. In 3, because, well, duh, and in 4.. well, okay, because it's Silent Hill, but yeah. Unless we learn something disturbing or embarrassing about Alex, I don't see a sustainable reason as to why they are more skanky. I think it cranks down the scare a bit. Like, this nurse wants to kill me, but she's really hot, so... okay. Whereas in the older games they seemed less... warm? How can I explain that? Oh, who cares? They're freaking skanks in this one.
Maybe it's simply because Americans, who are notorious for overindulging, decided to treat themselves to one liberty. Yes, I'm and American, Yes, I overindulge. No, I am not proud of it, and I'm pretty livid about the excessive mammorations. But I just thought I'd offer an explanation. And thoughts.
nightsavior @ Oct 15th 2007 5:49PM
I think it looks good. Every survival horror franchise has some type of "sex appeal" in it so I don't understand the huge beef with the re-done nurses. Heck Jame's whole journey through SH dealt with his wife and sexual frustration issues. There were also quite a few innuendoes with SH 3 and 4.
I do understand the concern adressing everything looks a bit "too clean". By that I don't mean not enough filth on stuff but the "grainer graphics" in the past actually added a surrealistic dreamlike appeal. Now it almost looks like a movie.
Anyway noone is going to know how good or bad it is until they play it. It's a bit early to make any assumptions.
