Avary talks Wolfenstein movie, Blazkowicz casting
In a new interview with Ain't It Cool News, Roger Avary – the recently announced writer/director of the Return to Castle Wolfenstein Oscar contender – talks about the process of adapting a video game to the big screen ("it's a bit of an uphill climb"), the character of BJ Blazkowicz ("he is not racist or an anti-Semite"), and casting the role ("all one needs to do is look at the box art on the Return to Castle Wolfenstein game and you can see who I see in my mind for the role.")
Well, we looked at that box art and, unless they're casting a lapel pin in the role of Nazi-killing machine BJ Blazkowicz, we'll assume he means the RtCW: Tides of War box art pictured above. Nevertheless, we're having a tough time seeing precisely who Avary has in mind. We've crossed our eyes; stood away from the screen; nothing. Maybe generi-tough guy Jason Statham? Or sensitive tough guy Ben Affleck? Our vote is for aging tough guy, Bruce Willis. He practically has Nazi-killer written all over him.

It's probably going to be a mindless action film where hundreds of "villains" die. No questions will be asked about the motivation of the nameless minions who are going to die. Were they forced? Do they have loved ones? No. Kill 'em all.
IlyaG @ Sep 10th 2007 2:19PM
I would rather NOT know about the characters getting killed. It makes watching these movies psychologically bearable and entertaining. If you'd prefer movie deaths to give you deep, psychological scars, watch something like Munich or Schindler's List instead.
hvnlysoldr @ Sep 10th 2007 12:38PM
Nazi science sneers at Zombie genocide.
Yuccadude @ Sep 10th 2007 12:45PM
I hope it's Jason "steakums" Statham, just because Crank was such a good movie with him, and The Transporter was excellent as well.
FrankTheCrank @ Sep 10th 2007 12:52PM
Wolfenstein movie...zzz...zzz...zzz
Creativity is no longer Hollyweird's strong suit...
mr nimblewick @ Sep 10th 2007 12:59PM
As opposed to when?
FrankTheCrank @ Sep 10th 2007 1:25PM
Late 70's all through the mid 80's...
Jaws, Close Encounters, Star Wars, Empire, Indiana Jones, Back To The Future, ET....
All these movies were original and were good. Hollyweird just gave up on creativity because they would rather make a quick buck on something that's already been established. I can understand, it's business, but creativity is just dead in that environment.

"Jaws, Close Encounters, Star Wars, Empire, Indiana Jones, Back To The Future, ET"
I'm seeing a theme to your list...
hvnlysoldr @ Sep 10th 2007 2:28PM
Ahhh the good old Spielberg and Lucas
Joran @ Sep 10th 2007 12:53PM
I was thinking Adam Baldwin, the actor who played Jayne Cobb in Firefly.
bigisy @ Sep 10th 2007 12:59PM
DING DING!!!
Adam Baldwin is the first guy that comes to mind for me too, seems to fit that face pretty good.
mr nimblewick @ Sep 10th 2007 1:03PM
No one plays tough/stupid like the man they call Jayne.
Grey Fox @ Sep 10th 2007 2:27PM
Can't believe someone didn't see it sooner! Then again I did watch alot of X Files and FireFly...
nerdron @ Sep 10th 2007 12:57PM
I was going to say adam baldwin as well. He looks like the box art, and would be great for the role.
papertrigger @ Sep 10th 2007 12:58PM
Adam Baldwin?

NATO_Duke @ Sep 10th 2007 1:14PM
I think its creepy that so many of us thought of adam baldwin.
On another note - this movie is a bad idea. Nothing gets people more angry than movies with Nazi's being shot! I can see the riots now.
mr nimblewick @ Sep 10th 2007 1:19PM
Wait, are we talking about Hitler's Nazis or the rainbow sunshine Nazis?
chispito @ Sep 10th 2007 1:19PM
@1 How do you think wars are ended, by understanding the inner turmoil of the common enemy soldier?
mr nimblewick @ Sep 10th 2007 1:20PM
Nope, their ended by completely ignoring the humanity of hundreds of thousands of Japanese civilians.
chispito @ Sep 10th 2007 1:30PM
Hey Nimble:
Does "Wolfenstein" sound Japanese to you? If you really want to complain about civillian deaths in time of war, you'd have brought up Dresden, but then it's clear you have neither thought deeply about the ethics of war nor read much history if you think "hundreds of thousands of Japanese civilians" refers to something in particular.
the_Brayn @ Sep 10th 2007 1:43PM
I believe he was referring to the nuklear bombs dropped on Japan during WWII. That really wasn't very hard to figure out.
mr nimblewick @ Sep 10th 2007 2:01PM
And here I thought you would yell at me for using "their" instead of the "they're."
But anyway, please explain how my statement does not refer to anything in particular. Please.
Kerber @ Sep 10th 2007 2:12PM
Saving Private Ryan was inarguably more successful than Pearl Harbor. Maybe people like seeing Nazi's get killed more than they care about Japanese humanity?
IlyaG @ Sep 10th 2007 2:22PM
Or maybe Michael Bay is an atrocious director compared to Steven Spielberg, and "Pearl Harbor" was one of the worst war movies of all time? Just a guess...
mr nimblewick @ Sep 10th 2007 2:29PM
Staying on topic...
Letters from Iwo Jima was well received.
hvnlysoldr @ Sep 10th 2007 2:30PM
Torah Torah!
Kerber @ Sep 10th 2007 2:30PM
Heh, good point.
Sean @ Sep 10th 2007 3:17PM
My money is on Michael Clark Duncan or Danny DeVito.
Joe Smith @ Sep 10th 2007 5:00PM
Roger Avary -- the new Uwe Boll. Only half as talented.
blooh @ Sep 10th 2007 7:11PM
then maybe the movie will be half as terrible?
Bryan @ Sep 10th 2007 5:12PM
I want them to find/cast this dude:

Lucky @ Sep 10th 2007 5:19PM
Would be hard to fuck this one up in my option.
Nelson @ Sep 10th 2007 5:28PM
I say it'll go to Vin Diesel.

Btw there is an another reason why I hate action films. They seek to make all the enemy "evil". 19m German men fought in the war. 2m of them in the Waffen-SS and the rest fought in the German Army. So it's hard for a rational human being can say they were all evil. I mean America did break international law when it invaded Iraq. But who wants to see a game where American soldiers are killed? The sad fact of life is. The very people who die (soldiers and civilians) are the ones who don't deserve it. While the people who do deserve to die (politicians) stay at home in comfort while soldiers are fighting for them.
