PS3 named best 'media center' by European org.

The good news for Sony: The PlayStation 3 has won another prestigious award for hardware design. The bad news: It has little to nothing to do with it's capabilities as a video game system.The European Imaging and Sound Association's convergence panel has named the PS3 the best European media center for 2007/2008. The award description cites the systems audio/video/photo playback capabilities, included 60GB hard drive, Wi-Fi, ethernet, bluetooth and surround sound support and, most importantly, the Blu-ray disc player. Oh, and they also mention, almost as an afterthought, that the system is "of course a very advanced game console and a worthy heir to the grand PlayStation heritage."
We have to wonder how well Sony's convergent set top box would have done without its game-playing capabilities. Would consumers have been interested in an all-in-one TV entertainment center on its own merits, or are all these multimedia features just nice additions to a unit that's primarily meant for games. to tell the truth about the ps3? that it is indeed a good media center? that's right, still can't play dvds off of a nintendo product, still can't store music on your wii, can't watch things in HD, the closest the wii has to a media center is you can look at photos on it and surf the web,

Ah..but it lacks one important feature: failure to be compatible with 100% of the universal remotes. Why? Because of Bluetooth. Until the remote companies feature a bluetooth option...meh.

It is a media center actually a good one....I run mine through windows media center. I can play all my songs, movies, and show my pics by streaming them from my PC to my 360. So I get to keep all my hard drive space....Oh wait you were being sarcastic

I think its because the PS3's game selection is slim to none. But in my opinion the 360 is a better media center. You can download HD movies, HD Tv Shows, stream music and pics through your PC. But the PS3 does have the Blu Ray player so I guess I see why they picked the PS3 as a great media center

Sony should of just stuck with a game machine a forgot about multimedia, either you want movies (note: for losers) or games (note: for people of a higher calibar). If I wanted to watch movies on my 360 I'd've bought the HD DVD drive but it's a game machine and that's what I use it for.

Just curious if they even looked at the 360's media extender capabilities. Granted I don't have a PS3, but from what I know of both.. the 360 does exactly the same stuff and has all the same features except Bluetooth... Actually, it has more since you can download and rent TV shows and movies, as well as watch HD-DVDs if you choose to. To top it off, it actually has a large line up of damn good games too!

It does, with a catch. It for the most part only allows you to put stuff on the HDD that you buy from the Marketplace. As for accessories, they are Microsoft only.
PS3, I can use or put on, whatever I choose to.

hardgay, he's talking about media center extender abilities. And the 360 is awesome for it as long as you have Transcode360 to ensure maximum compatibility. Its rumored the fall update will enable native Xvid and Divx playback.

@Zaphod: Hmm.. what you are saying is true for some things (like Marketplace downloads), but you can put your own music on the HDD on the 360 and play them whenever you like. More importantly, you can stream whatever media you like as well.

Don't know about HD movies but you can certainly stream audio/video from a computer. Even from a computer to your PSP.
