The Joystiq Guide to PSP Themes

Upgrade!: First things first, you're going to want to update to the 3.70 PSP Firmware. Just go all the way to the left in that XMB menu and hit "Network Update." (Tip: Make sure your PSP is able to connect to the internet, otherwise this will go poorly.) Follow the instructions to update your firmware.
To the net!: Now, go to this site. Next, get totally scared because it's all in Japanese!

"Ahhh!"
OK, you need to chill out. This is going to be fine. Just scroll down, there's just one thing we need from here. We need to click one gray button, scroll down until you see it.

Connected!: You're going to want to browse your memory card and inside your "PSP" directory, create another directory called "THEME." Now, put the file you saved (classypink.ptf) into that directory.
Set it and forget it!: Finally, go to "Theme Setting" under the "Settings" tab of the XMB. Now, choose "Theme". You'll see "Cookies" there, that's a theme that turns everything into cookies (as you may have guessed). You should also see a picture of your memory card with a classy pink orb next to it. Select it and apply it! You can now delete classypink.ptf from your card.
All done!: Finally, you did it! Enjoy your new theme! ... Oh! We almost forgot the most important step! Don't forget to realize that "cookies" and "classypink" are both really ugly and that you should change back to your original theme.

"Eureka!"
Save that file to your desktop and hook up your PSP to your PC with a USB cable. Connected!: You're going to want to browse your memory card and inside your "PSP" directory, create another directory called "THEME." Now, put the file you saved (classypink.ptf) into that directory.

Wind!

DON'T DO THIS!
Wait until the hacked firmware comes out, and then you'll be able to do this, plus run homebrew.
don't update! joystiq, wtf?
Nushio (NDF - Wind Ring) @ Sep 11th 2007 4:55PM
I'm pretty sure this blogpost was to point out the stupidity of themes, or at least, the one's available atm.
DBX00 @ Sep 11th 2007 4:40PM
I would wait for the custom firmware or buy a 2nd PSP for the new stuff. I'm picking up the PSP slim when it comes out and keeping my old one to run homebrew. On the site, they state that they'll are going to announce a theme editor in September and it will make modifying your own themes easy.
IAMDUDE70 @ Sep 11th 2007 4:43PM
I don't think this is PSP 2000 only. I just upgraded my original PSP, and it has a custom theme option too now.
KC @ Sep 11th 2007 8:40PM
Why even use homebrew crap?
I update each time and buy my games. No reason not to.
g0at @ Sep 11th 2007 4:47PM
check out www.pspupdates.com ... the homebrew out is really amazing, and there is no reason not to have the custom firmwares to run it.
V1L3 @ Sep 11th 2007 10:15PM
"no reason not to have the custom firmwares to run it."
Aside from voiding your warranty you mean? Yeah, no reason at all.
IAMDUDE70 @ Sep 11th 2007 4:49PM
Well, I was able to put the custom themes onto my original PSP. Yay for me.
Eddy @ Sep 16th 2007 2:38PM
I can't put the new themes into my original psp.please help.
IAMDUDE70 @ Sep 16th 2007 2:41PM
Did you download the latest update?
Brandon @ Sep 11th 2007 4:49PM
Here is the google translated version of that site, so that should make things easier. Homebrew is overrated, Upgrade folks!

No, it isn't. A community of millions will always be able to produce software to fill a need or want that a community of 100 can't or won't.
hvnlysoldr (NDF - Wind Ring) @ Sep 11th 2007 4:53PM
I've never understood the reasoning behind homebrew. Sure you could save a few bucks a cup instead of going to a shop or store; but unless you know what you're doing you'll just make a mess and get hurt. Besides I hate drinking coffee all together anyway.
Alexander @ Sep 11th 2007 4:57PM
works on orginal psp cookie theme is sweet wonder if u can make em urself
WiNG @ Sep 11th 2007 5:01PM
Is there a Lair theme??
Johnny Bloom @ Sep 11th 2007 5:05PM
Combine to form...
CAPTAIN PLANET!!!
Man, I love Joystiq memes. Oh, and, uh, can I be part of the NDF?
Fernando Rocker (NDF - Water Ring) @ Sep 11th 2007 5:10PM
The four rings should be reunited to set you a mission. And you have to be loyal to Nintendo, Regie and Miyamoto.
Wait for Kye: he have the sacred parchment of the NDF.
hvnlysoldr (NDF - Wind Ring) @ Sep 11th 2007 5:49PM
I may soon have to relinquish my ring when I go home to my family. We'll have a contest on who can have them.
Johnny Bloom @ Sep 11th 2007 6:09PM
Very well, I shall be. Please? I'll buy everyone Dandy Warhol CDs :^)
Nushio (NDF - Earth Ring) @ Sep 11th 2007 6:28PM
Dibs on the Earth Ring.
quickshade @ Sep 11th 2007 5:07PM
LOL joystiq FTW.
Brandon @ Sep 11th 2007 5:10PM
The pink theme isnt half bad when you change the wallpaper, the icons are semi-transparent, so whatever wallpaper you have kinda changes the look of the icons.
Sean @ Sep 11th 2007 5:38PM
The people who are saying to upgrade must have holes in their brain.
Cronotrigger913 @ Sep 11th 2007 5:51PM
That last sentence in the article was awesome:)
B1gC72 @ Sep 11th 2007 6:26PM
this theme thing is pretty cool. more interested in the simultaneous slideshow and music dealy though. can't wait until they release more themes or an editor because these two do suck (even though im using the cookie XMB right now lol).
o and don't anyone try to talk to me about homebrew either. ive walked on both sides and homebrew really didnt have anything to offer me. dont really wanna pirate games since "I get money, money I got" and all the old games i loved so much in my childhood really arent as fun as i remembered them. i found a couple useful programs (file assistant was a very good program) but nothing to warrant me keeping my custom firmware. sorry if i upset neone lol.
Macca @ Sep 11th 2007 8:02PM
These themes are horrible. The themes that the homebrew community are putting out are 100000x better. All you have to do is look at Applecor to see that http://img373.imageshack.us/img373/4743/screenshot003xm1.png. Plus, homebrew means psx games on psp :D. Just check out forums.qj.net, and then see some real themes.
[.sm0ke.] @ Sep 11th 2007 8:13PM
I've had a custom theme installed since 3.03 OE. How does this qualify as news?
Wevie1978 @ Sep 11th 2007 8:33PM
Worst PSP firmware update ever!

Homebrew scene has created amazing stuff but most of the people run pirated games with CFWs. Respect developers for god sake. If you want more games to come on PSP buy your games otherwise everybody will do DS games and PSP will be dead in 1-2 years.
I hope more people understand this
Kiljoy @ Sep 12th 2007 5:11PM
"If you want more games to come on PSP buy your games otherwise everybody will do DS games and PSP will be dead in 1-2 years." quote from miisho post
lol ds games are just as easily downloaded as psp games and just as easy to run as running isos on psp and cfw has been around for awhile and the games on the psp just keep getting better kinda like the nds and the mod cartridge for it ;)
I like that sony is watching what the home brew scene is doing and adding the features that the homebrew devs are creating for the homebrew users. Now if they could just add a cbr reader. ( yah right)
xavior @ Sep 13th 2007 7:12PM
homebrews ssssssssssssuuuuuuuuuuuccccccccckkkkkkkkk
Jay Lee @ Sep 14th 2007 3:27PM
I much prefer official software to the hacks, simply because I can use flash, or some low price discount PSP games collection (of which there are lots) if I want to play solitare or Galaga. The custom themes for official PSP is an AWESOME thing that I can't wait to be able to do.
I just need to buy a PSP Slim and upgrade it. :( I want the Daxter pack!
Sony may be slow, but they listen and eventually they'll find a way to have custom games on the PSP without any pirated ROMs or EBOOTS playable. If the hackers would just cut them some slack and stop putting sony down all the time and learn some patience. Nothing good in life is instantaneous, even childbirth takes at least 9 months.
*gets down off of soapbox*

Word.
Homebrews good and all, but I don't want to risk bricking you know?
Plus, pirated games hurt the industry.
IRONVULVA @ Oct 2nd 2007 2:35PM
The risk associated with bricking is not severe with the release of the pandora's battery/"MMS". I knew nothing about CFW the other day, even bricked my fat psp, and today I'm on CFW and enjoying psone games (games I own, FYI) on my PSP at no additional charge. Next I'll be trying to unload my UMDs to memory stick so I don't have to pick specific games from my library to take with me (normally I'd have to carry an additional case just for my UMDs). And supposedly I'll also be saving battery life by doing so, and experience quicker load times (from what I've read, haven't tried it yet). Sure, I spent several hours researching/googling, but I just made my PSP a whole lot more useful.
kriminal @ Oct 4th 2007 10:51AM
