BioShock is Cliffy's GOTY

Cliffy B has been busy busily working up a storm in North Carolina as of late, probably working on a super secret project (ahem, Gears of War 2). But all that busyness doesn't stop him from giving his thoughts on the industry's blockbuster games and giving out his official Cliffy B game of the year honors to none other than BioShock.

Over on CliffyB.com, Mr. Cliff gives his brutally honest yet professional take on BioShock discussing the good (art design, story narration and evil dudes who make you feel bad about yourself) along with the bad (somewhat sloppy telekinesis and annoying bees who don't make honey). Overall though, Cliffy thinks that this Unreal Engine 3 based game deserves game of the year honors for perfecting the blend of gameplay and immersive story that all next gen game should strive for. But then again it's only September and Cliffy has yet to play Halo 3, so we'll see if he retracts his GOTY honors next week. We kid, we kid Cliffy, BioShock is good times and we all know it (ahem, Halo 3).

Bioshock has no replay value. Everyone that I know bought the game and no longer play it cause theyve beaten it like 4 times.

Sorry for the double, but I kinda contradicted my statement.

I mean it has no MP replay ability. The story can only be played so many times.

Replayability or not I think Bioshock deserves GOTY

I certainly think Bioshock is GOTY as well.

Halo 3 is just Halo 2 with more gear. And Halo 2 was a major disappointment.

Eh, I still feel Bioshock was nothing more than a chore to play. Doesn't matter how good the story is if the way the game handles is absymal. I've never had less fun shooting a gun in my life.

I think the only reason the guy wants the game to be GOTY is either A: He has no thoughts of his own and follows the crowd or B: They need it for Epic so they can have something to fall back on in the suit with Silicon Knights.

Well, considering the fact that Cliffy has already played an ALMOST final build of Halo 3, then he really CAN say which one HE thinks is better.

Btw, to everyone that think Bioshock will get GOTY, GO HOME. By the time Mass Effect comes out, everyone'll have played H3, M.E., COD4, A.C. and MANY more games that will TRUMP Biosuck. Bioshock may end up in the running for GOTY, but WILL NOT WIN. Believe.

Awesome Bioshock deserves it, it's an amazing game!

Statements like that are a pretty good way to keep your name in the spotlight. He didn't even have to bring up UT3, we did it for him.

Mass Effect will be GOTY.

Maybe cause he works for Epic Games and is promoting their Unreal Engine, this game will definitely not be GOTY. Halo 3 has done so much more on a technical standpoint, the finale (story/plot) is there, and of course multiplayer and the gigantic community it will bring together. GOTY is an understatement for Halo 3.

It's a definite overstatement for Halo 3.

Repeat after me: Mass Effect will win Game of the Year.

Bioshock would have gotten a high 8 would it have included multiplayer. The reason its highly praised is ebacuase it's only single player and the devs can focus more on that aspect. Regardless, idf it had multiplayer, it would havbe been sloppy and been compared to the likes of Gears, and Halo 3 which would have certainly downgraded it

Also i also believe Mass Effect will win GoTY for sure. It just hasn't been marketed as much as SOME games have lol. But for real, you guys gotta check out the couple of 20 min. videos they have on it. The world universe is just so rich and diverse. One of the devs said they dont even know how mnay planets are in that game. It looks to be worth months of playtime.

BTW, what site do you guys look at for GOTY? IGN, Gamespy, X3F?

Bioshock is great, but God of War 2 is my GOTY.

...along with a few others, going to stick my ass to the wind - No GOTY for H3...or 'Shooter of the year' for that matter. (SOTY goes to CoD4)

Bioshock is really, really, good. But the end doesn't work for me.

SPOILER...

...the last battle seems like it belongs in a different game. It's almost something out of an X-Men platformer. And the resoulution (I had the "bad" ending) felt rushed and even confusing. I really wanted there to be an epic escape or something to add some weight to everything you had done. While minor, those are the only points I feel it has against it - and that's only when looking at the game in a whole, which for a GOTY nod, I sort of feel you have to do.

agree 100% with TORO, Halo 3 will easily get GOTY. If Bioshock did even half the things Halo 3 will do then maybe it could be in the running.

Doesn't Bioshock scare you guys? It scares me so much I can barely play it.

Wow. I applaud Rick and his GIANT pair of "e-testicles", but really...God of War 2? Granted i didnt play it but i didnt hear too much fanfare about it. I would play it but dont own a PS2. Elaborate please. What was good about it?

Agree w/ Hocker about the ending. The last battle was pretty much a joke. I got the "good" ending, but I hear they're both about the same length (e.g. a minute or two). I got a bit of a chill from it -- I was really immersed in the storyline -- but still way too short. I guess I expected it to play a short cinematic, then take a while and do something involved with the credits. It was kind of jarring to be thrown around like "Yay, you win, your life is great, and... PRESS START. WTF?"

That said, still GotY, obviously. I said in another post that I don't get why all the hype with Halo, and pretty much everything else has big (Daddy) shoes to fill...

I think, in spite of all of Bioshock's shortcomings (and there are few), it will still be GotY. Unless Halo 3 can really impress me, which it hasn't really from the first Halo, Bioshock is my pick. Of course, I haven't bitten into any of the hype around Mass Effect too much but I'll have to wait and see for that title.

Watch, we're all wrong and SKATE will be the GotY. Revitalizes a whole genre on its own, caters to different kinds of gamers/skaters (without bludgeoning it over your head like Proving Grounds), and got a pretty hefty feature list.

okay the battle is between mass effect and bioshock and halo 3. halo 3 will win shooter of the year, cause saying that cod 4 will win is stupid and all opinion( i could care less about what you think, im all about facts). bioshock was good but to many felt wierd(espieclly the endings) kinda like system shock 2. it goes the same for halo 3, i played the beta and let me tell you it was amazing. my cuz' best friends works for omx and seen the halo 3 behind closed doors and the graphics are good too(that gets rid of the it looks like halo 2). and its halo so you KNOW what to expect(form a sequel). mass effect had some up and downs in previews, but heck im getin it. and so i conclude that i(yes its my opinion, and dont care what you think about mine) halo 3 will win base on hype seeing the leaked ending(im bad) which i have to say the ending was better than the bioshock story altogether. so there thats my 2 cents. and no cod 4 will not win shooter of hte year that just plain stupid( the beta is really good though)

Why am I =not= surprised; Cliffy B picks a game that received rave reviews and runs on the UE3 engine. The only other game he'd likely pick would be Mass Effect, because of the same reason.

I would be stunned if he picked Halo 3, even though Halo 3 is going to smash every record and close the chapter on Gears of War in the book of 360 Steller Games.

You know, before Cliffy screwed the 360 community by not giving us the awsome content the PC is getting in GoW I might have cared what he thinks. Oh well.

I find the God of War 2 story to be much deeper, longer and the boss battles are much harder than in Bioshock. In God of War you get to beat the crap out of people with swords attached to chains and as a bonus have sex with two girls at the same time.

In the interest of full disclosure I have a PS3 and I just recently purchased a 360 specifically to play Bioshock and to re-unite with my old friend the Master Chief.

Halo 3 may change my mind, but right now God of War is my GotY.

I'm sure Halo 3 will be more popular but I'm certain that Bioshock is the better game, by far.

Hmm, how about Unreal Tournament 3? That's set to be released on the PS3 this year (isn't it?). Or does he mean GOTY for the 360 only? Otherwise it would mean that he prefers a third party game using their engine than their own game...

Wow, really? I was so compelled by the amazing story and the astounding visuals and atmosphere that I played Bioshock non-stop for days. I hate shooter games but this game is most certainly my GOTY. It's the first game I've played since Prince of Persia: Sands of Time that I didn't get bored, loose interest and put it on the shelf to never be played again.
