Not only is digital download on shortsighted, its incredibly impractical. It assumes that we're all sitting in a cloud of bandwidth and we can just download things from this mythical cloud quickly and without any cost to ourselves. All things we know are complete BS unless you're downloading something at your house.

So Dave, when I go to buy/rent a game before a flight am I supposed to just "use the force" to get the game onto my PSP since neither the airport nor the plane actually have coverage?

Why can't they whack a 80GB HDD ala iPod, beef up the wifi to 11g, add some memory to this sick dog of a console so the web browsing doesn't bum out all the time. Sack of the UMD, it's a waste of time, really.

Yes, add a second analog stick. Beef up the battery and make it stay a decent weight, come on Sony I know you can do this shit but you're just too busy trying to blow off developers to code your games faster because you don't even understand how build development tools like MS, you only just got Havok out of the box.

Give the PSP to MS for a couple of months, then make it shiny back at Sony village.

But wait, that won't happen because you have 50 developers to get round just tonight.

Why wouldnt the price drop? They are no longer having to produce dvds or blurays, and no packaging? They would also be doing the environment a favor.

Harddrive? God No. Not another mechanical part.

Keeping Memory Stick is absolutely fine. (Disclaimer: DS owner and huge micro/SD card fan.)

I'm not sure where from $30/GB comes from. In Germany you can get 1GB memory stick for 15€.

Having four-five games per stick would be absolutely fine. Add here all the benefits of stick vs. hdd power consumption.

Main point is that releasing game on UMD I think costs a some hefty sum of money. The high entry price bars many good interesting simple and inexpensive games from coming to PSP. Buying/downloading games to MS might solve many problems.

I'm sure that downloadable games would sooner or later take over disk/card games. Downloading times, flash storage costs are all factors. Yet, I can say even with current price and bandwidth it is already acceptable.

And do not all the convenience of having several games inside of PSP at a time. Believe me (from my Nintendo DS + R4 experience) that outweighs many arguments you might make. Just try it.

Yes Dave Perry, because everyone has high speed internet for redownloading PSP games they already have on disc. Seriously, I even see nasty dirt-poor looking kids with these things looking like it's the only xmas gift they're getting for a few years, so you really expect a handheld system to move to digital-distro-only painlessly?

I'm not arguing that it doesn't need to be done, but painlessly? Far from. It would not only cost more than current PSP's but Sony would need to get on the ball converting all those UMD games to digital copies, and then there's the issue of file space on the PSP...

i guess they would do it the same way they do it with there ipods. if they have a psp and thats the only thing they are getting for years. One, shoulda gotten em a DS, its cheaper and you have money left over for games. If they cant then they probably only have one game anyways. For the 30-40 bucks a game cost they can spend 5 bucks to use an internet cafe and upload. (or friends etc etc im sure they know someone who has highspeed internet. if they are that poor that they dont then they definetly dont have a psp anyways.) Its not like they are uploading games everyday. If they have money to do that they have highspeed internet

Phone with 3G + touch screen + 8 GB HDD = awesome games platform

Make it pretty, price it low with an intent to make some of it back up on games, and you also have an iPhone killer at the same time

I think its a good idea. Without UMD's you can certainly add an built in hard drive (its been done with ipods) and even if its not a huge drive (maybe 8gb but if you can match the 160 gb like an ipod wow!) You can still created the online site a la itunes (not as crappy though but you get the idea. and download what you want to play. when you are done delete and add a new one. Your progression is always there since you can save on a seperate file, so if you wish to revisit you dont have to restart it. Just upload and continue. I hate having to lug discs everywhere that wind up cracking or getting messed up or lost etc. To just have to bring my psp and have everything there? Awesome.

wat a dumbass. i know plenty of PSP owners that dont have a high speed internet connection (i live in the sticks). that would completely alienate them as PSP gamers. plus there is nothing wrong with UMD games, its just the movies that are bad because of Sony's bonehead decision to have them only playable on one device (i think the tv out dealy is too little, too late now). this guy is a frickin retard.

Get rid of UMD and replace it with a 80 Gig HDD. Make everything downloadable. Keep The flash memory. But only in my dreams.

Add hard drive = impossible to reduce price.

Honestly. I can understand that space is an issue when downloading games for consoles, but we're talking about a hand-held system with a little screen and tinny speakers. If you can't make a game for a hand-held system fit in a couple megs of space, you're a phenomenally stupid developer.

I dont know, I really like the idea of digital downloads. Just replace the UMD drive with a standard 1.8" hdd socket like the PS3 has a standard 2.5" hard drive socket. Include a 20GB, which is enough to store ~20+ PSP games and can be bought on pricegrabber for under $50 shipped right now. People who want to upgrade it to the 160GB 1.8" hdd like in the new iPod Classic could do so.

That might work, but not everybody has access to high-speed wireless internet. I could be wrong, but didn't a recent study show that the number of homes in the US with broadband was only at 40-50%? You'd at least want a majority of homes to have broadband before you tried something like that.

Man, it's annoying when has-beens don't realize they're has-beens. Besides no one caring about Dave Perry period, let alone what he thinks of the PSP, his idea for a UMD-less download-only PSP is stupid as hell.
