Xfire shows off their latest Xstatics
If you're anything like us, you may not be aware of what Xfire does besides run stellar machinima contests or host interesting discussions in their debate club. However, they also produce a gaming-oriented IM client that lets you see what games your friends are playing, chat with them in or out of game, and join them in whatever game they might be playing. This little application allows Xfire to compile some interesting data about the games people are playing and – while their data doesn't include every last gamer – with over 8 million users in 700 different games, they have a broad sampling size. Read on for a breakdown of the details or check out Xfire's Xstatics site.

But this only shows what the tools who use Xfire are playing.
Sorry to any Xfire tools reading this.
Truepatriot @ Sep 17th 2007 6:38PM
i dont use xfire but why are they tools?
im sorta shocked so many ppl still play cod2 they must have hated 3 XD
Exo @ Sep 17th 2007 6:39PM
thats big talk coming from the biggest tool of them all
David @ Sep 17th 2007 6:41PM
"But this only shows what the tools who use Xfire are playing."
That's pretty much what they said in the title, idiot.
Neebs @ Sep 18th 2007 6:10AM
"im sorta shocked so many ppl still play cod2 they must have hated 3 XD"
Yeah, PC Gamers hated 3. It never came out on PC.
Joe P @ Sep 18th 2007 1:43PM
Yes, because we should judge people based on their IM clients. Mature.
Psaakyrn @ Sep 17th 2007 6:51PM
How long will it take before we get a Warcraft sandwich similar to the DS sandwich we have elsewhere?
Also, GameGuard-using clients sucks to those who are stuck behind a proxy. Boo. (sadly this includes practically all asia-based MMO companies, including NCSoft)
shivr @ Sep 17th 2007 6:55PM
needs moar WoW
vidGuy @ Sep 17th 2007 7:07PM
Say what now?
Warlord @ Sep 17th 2007 7:10PM
Well, since COD3 was console-only, it's a bit hard for a PC program to track console usage.
DBuck_Eye @ Sep 17th 2007 7:16PM
Soldier Front FTW. I love that game.
WiNG @ Sep 17th 2007 7:34PM
well considering WOW has about 8x more players than Guild Wars it is cool to see GW up there.
Now if you took out all the mindless grind farming, maybe the WOW stat would be a lot lower?
Psaakyrn @ Sep 17th 2007 8:20PM
Mindless grind farming is a perfectly valid past-time. You think your mindless shoot-the-enemy games are any better?
WiNG @ Sep 17th 2007 9:49PM
No I don't play those. I was refering to Guild Wars and its lack of grind.
Shawn @ Sep 17th 2007 7:41PM
And that's only Xfire stats. Gamespy has a nice stat tracker as well. With the new Steam community that's out of beta now, it should be even better now to track online play. If any pc gamers haven't seen it yet, go sign up for STEAM's community, it rocks.
I think CS/CS:S numbers are way way way higher than what xfire is reporting, as that's only xfire users. As a matter of fact, there are probably an equal amount of CS players worldwide as WoW players, but minus the grind.
Purple Haze @ Sep 17th 2007 8:51PM
Whoops, shoulda read all the comments before repeating things but I agree with you.
lilblackdemon @ Sep 17th 2007 7:53PM
@Truepatriot:
PC users hated CoD 3 because it never came out on PC. That one was console-exclusive (and, imho, is also the worst).
Truepatriot @ Sep 17th 2007 8:02PM
ah lol forgive my ignorance.i just made no sense in my mind why cod3 wouldnt come to pcs.
lilblackdemon @ Sep 17th 2007 8:10PM
CoD 1, 2, 4 are Inifinity Ward, UO, BR1, and 3 are Treyarch. The Treyarch games have never come to PC.
Poisoned Al @ Sep 17th 2007 7:58PM
Should be interesting to see what happens when TF2 comes out. It won't beat WoW, but I don't know anyone who has a 360/PC that isn't getting it.
Psaakyrn @ Sep 17th 2007 8:23PM
This is a test of the password system. If this works, it means that my account is corrupted because I can't use the exact same password to login and ghange avatar.
Purple Haze @ Sep 17th 2007 8:48PM
Steam has its own friends system so people wouldn't really need x-fire for CS
Psaakyrn @ Sep 17th 2007 9:22PM
False. The point of XFire is that it lets people communicate between unrelated games (such as CS and WoW). Otherwise I could just use a traditional chat server.
WhatIsThatThing @ Sep 17th 2007 8:55PM
Xstatics? Don't you mean Xstatistics? What are Xstatics? The fuzzyness your monitor gets when you use Xfire or something?
WhatIsThatThing @ Sep 17th 2007 8:56PM
Or are they...Xstatic about their Xstats?
Neebs @ Sep 18th 2007 6:11AM
bud dum pish.
Slaziman @ Sep 17th 2007 9:09PM
I use Xfire, anyone wanna be my friend? ;]
Chris_Mac @ Sep 17th 2007 9:10PM
CoD2 above CS surprises me
elmersglue @ Sep 17th 2007 10:49PM
Am i the only one annoyed by WOW and how many ppl play it?
Sean @ Sep 18th 2007 12:53AM
Shows the sorry state of PC gaming. Most of the games in the top 10 are 5 years old.
Swifty @ Sep 18th 2007 2:14AM
World of Warcraft - released 2004
Call of Duty 2 - October 2005
Counter-Strike Source - October 2004
Battlefield 2 - June 2005
Guild Wars - April 2005
Frozen Throne - July 2003
Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory - May 2003
Silkroad Online - October 2005
The only games that are over five years old on that list is Counter-Strike 1.6 and Soldier Front.
Neebs @ Sep 18th 2007 6:16AM
Or perhaps it proves against the ignorant console fanboy response that you need a great PC to play PC games?
ThornedVenom @ Sep 18th 2007 12:59AM
I REALLY want to use Xfire, except that I have no friends on it, or who really play the same games I do. Oh, and is it better than Teamspeak?
t_m @ Sep 18th 2007 3:28AM
Wow.... I should really download Wolfenstien: Enemy Territory. Since its free and all. I've been meaning to play it for years.. but i assumed no one would be playing it these days...
t_m @ Sep 18th 2007 3:47AM
PS/ Why do the main sites never review or talk about games like Soldier Front or Gunz? These sort of games seem way more popular than other games that get much more attention.
