cool. I like good mmo's, but I got tired of warcraft after about 5 months. Maybe this will be good enough to get 5 monthly fees outta me :)

You had me until "it seems like Funcom is pulling some pages from Blizzard's playbook".

I don't know that pulling from Blizzard's playbook, as I put it, is necessarily a bad thing. They're not copying World of Warcraft, but paying attention to the philosophy behind Blizzard's game design. And you've got to admit, Blizzard's made some fine games throughout their history.

Sure. But WoW, at least in my opinion, didn't quite break the mold of the MMO. It was evolutionary rather than revolutionary. In the end, although it took me longer to come to that realization than with past MMOs, I came to feel that I was unable to impact the world. Everything I killed had been killed before. Everything I'd kill would re-spawn and be killed again by someone else. Everything I acquired had already been acquired. I change nothing.

that's my main gripe with mmo's too. but it doesnt look like they'll change that anytime soon, unfortunently. WoW does it slightly, having the green items that are dropped occasionally with random stats, within certain limits.

Oh well, even without true game impactability, mmo's can be fun for a few months. I loved how visceral CoV was, especially as a brute. Way more fun than WoW, but with far fewer amenities than WoW.

Awesome, I stopped by their booth at Dragon*Con earlier this month, and they seemed to be the only game developers present at the time. I watched someone play for about five minutes, checked out the trailer, and picked up an inflatable Conan Sword that deflated around three hours later.

The game looks awesome, though, and you really summed it up well!

Really my only question for this or any other MMO is does it have model clipping. The dynamic of clipping like in DDO (though they only do it against mobs) changes... well everything. What the point of having sword moves and blocks without clipping, there is none.

Well, WoW took what other MMOs had done and tried to improve upon it. I get a similar feeling from AoC -- that Funcom has spent a lot of time studying what other MMOs are doing and taken the best aspects of each for their own use. I also think that Funcom is throwing in some innovation of their own into the mix (the combat system is non-standard, the drunken brawling is out of the ordinary, they've got an unusual mix of classes to keep things interesting, and none of the major MMOs have siege warfare implemented yet iirc), but we're still too far off of release to know for certain how it will all work itself out.

One thing that sticks out and worries me, the use of archetypes for classes. The idea that you pick your archetype and then later specialize into your class at lvl 20. EQ2 had this at release and it failed because it took you 20 levels to figure out if you really wanted to be that class. It made it really hard to see if you liked a class. I guess it just depends on how fast lvling will be in this game. Ohterwise as a fan of MMOs I look forward to trying this one out.

In Conan lore there are women who are just as strong as men are. Mostly fighting women Conan meets, only he is a bit stronger than they are but he is an "epic hero of the century" and that means the average fighting women is just as tough as the average fighting man in the conan lore too.
