Future publishing taking over Nintendo Power
While searching for a way to get out of journalism and make some real cash, Gamasutra discovered a listing on the Nintendo corporate job board for someone to be the Licensing Manager for Nintendo Power. The job would entail being in close contact with new publisher Future Publishing.Future publishing already handles the official Nintendo, PlayStation and Xbox magazines in the UK, and handles the Official Xbox Magazine in North America. This is obviously all part of Nintendo's corporate restructuring which saw the retirement of George Harrison. Future has no comment to make at this time, but expect an announcement real soon. This stays in line with reports from May that Nintendo Power employees were told to look for new work by September.

Nintendo Power over the years has slipped through the cracks and has become a mediocre magazine. Hopefully this will breathe life into it!
phattie @ Sep 18th 2007 7:00PM
That happened a long time ago; everything is about Web 2.0 nowadays.. what nintendo needs is an official blog or forum... doh, never mind.
Gavin @ Sep 18th 2007 7:35PM
It was always mediocre...you just grew up while the magazine never has.
fulci zombi @ Sep 18th 2007 7:02PM
Does anyone over age 14 read it?
Cronotrigger913 @ Sep 18th 2007 7:04PM
Man, Nintendo is getting rid of half their force, it seems. No forums, no magazine, some people not moving to wherever they decided to move. Next we'll probably hear the Nintendo World Store being shut down.
Also, Nintendo Power magazine used to suck, but was pretty cool the last year or so. It sucks that the redesign was all for naught.
Ska Oreo @ Sep 18th 2007 10:14PM
Nah it wasn't. The new format tricked you into thinking it was more adult, but it still sucked. I'll never forgive them for giving Shadow the hedgehog an 8.
Poisoned Al @ Sep 18th 2007 7:12PM
Well all the game rags I have ever read over the last 20 or so years have been from Future, so I think it should be all right.
God, I feel really old all of a sudden!
Mr Khan @ Sep 18th 2007 7:22PM
The guys who do OXM eh?
Maybe they'll start giving demo discs, finally...
I somewhat see the logic behind this move, with the decline of printed gaming media overall, but it seems to coincide with the annihilation of the Nintendo boards (which seemingly has no logic to back it up)
Either they're going to replace this with Wii-based stuff, or they've gone batshit crazy
whymog @ Sep 18th 2007 7:24PM
True story: I own that issue pictured in the article.
True story: I feel old now.
Ratchet the Lombax @ Sep 18th 2007 8:39PM
So do I it's sitting on a shelf in my living room next to my R.O.B, god I feel old too.
Rubang B (NDF - Heart) @ Sep 19th 2007 2:29AM
I have that issue too, but my lame 5 year old ass cut out a bunch of the pictures so I can't read half of it now. I don't know what I did with them either. I wasn't making collages or anything. I only put 2 or 3 of my favorite posters on the wall. I have no idea where half the magazine went.
NintendoFanbot @ Sep 18th 2007 7:36PM
So if it's publishing that's changing, hopefully most of the editorial content remains untouched. Of course, with Reggie as a supervising editor, the NP staff may have to consider moving as well, which some may not. :(
gajolo @ Sep 18th 2007 7:42PM
Is it me, or does it feal like Nintendo is going through a MAJOR change?
No more forums, firing tons of people, new magazine puplisher, new game philosophy...
I'm not sure if I even should support Nintendo any more, it's not the same company.

I am at loss without the official forums.
So I created this www.thenforums.freeforums.org
Come join it please!

People need to calm the eff down about the forums. They'll be back up soon.
I hope they don't re-redesign NP. I own every issue of "The New Power", and I like the look.
Ska Oreo @ Sep 18th 2007 9:55PM
And even if it doesn't, so what? I guarantee you that most, if not all of the members on the forum belonged to different forums where the bitch about the same damn thing.
YoRone22 @ Sep 18th 2007 9:26PM
Wow. So Nintendo Power is moving to future? I guess I won't renew my subscription. I hate their advertisements. Cellplay is going to take up 10 pages.
Joshua @ Sep 18th 2007 11:57PM
I like/liked the current/old staff and writers, so losing them will be a major blow against the magazine, even if it lives on in a different form.
So yeah, as gajolo said, Nintendo is still going threw some HUGE changes right now.
Rubang B (NDF - Heart) @ Sep 19th 2007 2:31AM
I've never read a magazine from the future before. What's it like? Do I get a pony for Christmas?
Jon @ Sep 19th 2007 3:05AM
EDGE is the only good thing out of Future. Their console exclusive magazines in the UK are pretty trashy. The official Nintendo magazine for example is designed to be modern and adult, but articles still caters for kids.
GUIGUI @ Sep 19th 2007 3:43AM
I am sorry to inform you that in France, future publishing took over some of the greatest magazine and simply destroyed them. you can consider Nintendo Power has definitively ruined, now.
Herr Zrbo @ Sep 19th 2007 12:27PM
Nintendo Power is for the youngins, I've still got my 'Nintendo Fun Club' mags!
Adam Zey @ Sep 19th 2007 12:53PM
Future does some pretty good stuff. They do Maximum PC, which is a great magazine. They also did MacAddict (now Mac|Life, I think), which was also awesome back when I subscribed to it (no longer a Mac user).
If the quality is like any of the other Future titles I do/have subscribe(d) to, they're in good hands.
