Kaz Hirai has come to the Tokyo Game Show bearing good news indeed: Sony's finally putting out a SIXAXIS with rumble, the DualShock 3. The controller will look exactly like the SIXAXIS, and is going to be hitting Japan this November, and North America and Europe in spring 2008. A few games in development have the function already, including Metal Gear Solid 4, and existing games can be updated with rumble over the PlayStation Network. Of course, the
beans were spilled by EA earlier today, and Kaz says Sony
let developers know about the controller as soon as it was decided upon, which would explain all the other leaks over the year. What Sony has constantly described as a technical difficulty stemming from the motion sensitivity of the controller has apparently been overcome, but it's still hard not to pin it all on that Immersion lawsuit no matter how much spin Sony puts on things. There's no word on price for the DualShock 3.

Move on people, nothing to see here.
maverick_saturn_626 @ Sep 19th 2007 11:17PM
While it does satisfy me to see this finally released, it does dawn on me the amount of time and effort it took to get it, and is it worth it? Thats the question.
Sony says they can't add rumble, and its outdated anyway, just to maintain their pride yatter yatter, and end up loosing all dignity, (or have they gained :S) by being forced into the idea again anywho.
Silly Sony, deary dear
Ska Oreo @ Sep 19th 2007 11:19PM
You know, you could have replied to your own post.
But anyways, everyone knows the whole, "Rumble is last gen" was a pathetic attempt to try to conceal the fact that they couldn't use the rumble for their controllers.
Guybrush Threepwood @ Sep 19th 2007 11:22PM
Actually, it was an attempt to keep Sony share holders from getting angry.
Not unlike how Iwata's "gamer's don't want online play" riff-raff was said to keep share holders content.
root @ Sep 20th 2007 10:53AM
sorry but
will it blend - that is the question IMHO
Hidden_Agenda @ Sep 20th 2007 2:02PM
Rumble was not included from the start due to legal issues with Immersion.
However, rather just telling their customers that, they decided to lie and make up excuses that it would cost the consumer too much. So instead, they just ripped the motion control idea from Nintendo. Sony has once EVER been straight forward with their customers regarding any of their gaming system.
Yet now that their legal issues with Immersion have been resolved it is most revealing, to me, that they would now choose to add rumble. Did the cost of the hardware that they have used for years just now become cost friendly? I think not.
It is because of such lies and complete disregard for customers that I will never buy any gaming system made by them.
I am quite happy playing the PC, 360, Wii, and DS
Just_a_guy @ Sep 19th 2007 11:18PM
um... the wii did it a little less than a year ago!
that shows how behind the times the PS3 controller is!
Guybrush Threepwood @ Sep 19th 2007 11:18PM
Cool.
I asked this earlier today, but any word if the rumble will be normal rumble or Immersion's "next-gen" rumble?
jsn @ Sep 19th 2007 11:21PM
I also asked, what is next-gen rumble? I figured that it's not a vibrating dick sleeve attachment, so what is it?
Alexander @ Sep 19th 2007 11:19PM
SWEET
mfed3 @ Sep 19th 2007 11:22PM
OMG YES YES YYESSSSS YES YES. OMG YES. the sony revolution begins.
wait a minute...hasnt this been in controllers since 1997 on n64. Spring 2008?
LOL SONY you are an absolute joke. ms gets halo 3, wii gets smash bros, you get...rumble. good work, you lose. thank you for playing noobs.
Geoffrey Sperl @ Sep 20th 2007 9:47AM
Well, to be fair, you did have to buy a rumble pack for an N64 controller to use rumble.
I always found the third-party rumble/save packs to be the funniest looking things out there...
Thr3e2wenty8 @ Sep 20th 2007 2:58PM
Smash Brothers - Who Freaking Cares?
That system (nintendo) is the starter kit for the easily ammused.
Stop acting like sales means its better. I fear that means people are actually getting dumber from all the "reality TV" they've been watching.
FLAVA FLAAAAAAAV!
CGamble20 @ Sep 20th 2007 4:39PM
actually you forgot Rachet and Clank, Killzone, LittleBigPlanet, Uncharted, Heavenly Sword, Metal Gear Solid 4,Final Fantasy XIII, and Haze to name a few.
WhatIsThatThing @ Sep 20th 2007 5:01PM
The fact that Thr3e2wenty8ight's comment was voted up only seems to prove his statement further.
Super AZN Jenn @ Sep 19th 2007 11:22PM
Who cares?
This controller has just has much hype has Halo 3.
It's a fucking controller that rumbles! What's the big fucking deal!
rTwelve @ Sep 19th 2007 11:34PM
Really? Where's my Sprite Remix DualShock?
phattie @ Sep 19th 2007 11:20PM
F*CK YEA!
Arno @ Sep 19th 2007 11:20PM
But, but.. Rumble is *so* last gen. No, isn't that what you said, Sony?
Myke @ Sep 19th 2007 11:32PM
Didnt someone else say that HDMI is useless and 20GBs HDD are more than enuff? Grow up! Everybody is hyprocritical!
Irwin @ Sep 20th 2007 8:46AM
HDMI?
well i guess you do have a point here..but they said that the industry isnt ready for HDMI yet..not enough tv's that support it, and not enough people cared about the feature
20 GB HDD?
lol, they made it expandable for a reason.
what's sony's excuse?
like Ska Oreo said,
"But anyways, everyone knows the whole, "Rumble is last gen" was a pathetic attempt to try to conceal the fact that they couldn't use the rumble for their controllers."
archie91s @ Sep 19th 2007 11:23PM
I wonder if it has the 'next generation' rumble that immersion was talking about. I hope it includes it. Shane Bettenhausen said in the last 1up yours podcast that the analog sticks might actually rumble. Or maybe he was just joking around.
archie91s @ Sep 19th 2007 11:27PM
And, by the way, if it doesn't have any new rumble, why didn't they just announce this after e3, which was still after the immersion lawsuit was settled?
samfish (MSDF- Nurse Outfit!) @ Sep 19th 2007 11:23PM
Avast, me hearties! It seems that Next Gen has finally started!
Guybrush Threepwood @ Sep 19th 2007 11:26PM
You do realize that speaking in normal English qualifies as pirate-speak, right?
I, Guybrush Threepwood, a very mighty pirate, am living proof of this fact.
SKI @ Sep 19th 2007 11:29PM
Not till Spring 08.
Guybrush Threepwood @ Sep 19th 2007 11:24PM
Oh, Immersion developed some new rumble technology that was supposedly going to be included in the DualShock 3.
Uh... read about it here:
http://www.immersion.com/gaming/video_pc/next-gen/
It will explain it better than I can.
Lemmiwinks @ Sep 19th 2007 11:24PM

wait, nevermind... when does MGS4 come out again?
Lemmiwinks @ Sep 20th 2007 12:02AM
Leave it to SONY to supply me with an actual punchline:

blooh (CDF - Ass Ring) @ Sep 19th 2007 11:28PM
next gen starts now
maverick_saturn_626 @ Sep 19th 2007 11:31PM
Any chance this controller will shift 9 million units to catch up with 360 and Wii?
Lemmiwinks @ Sep 19th 2007 11:32PM
now THAT would be motion control
maverick_saturn_626 @ Sep 19th 2007 11:29PM
YES! I just found out PS3 controllers will not only have rumble, but a built in MP3 player, video playback, umd slots and a whole load of other crap we won't need but hey, we still buy don't we! ^^
On another note, I WANT THE BOOMERANG BACK!
Odd though it may have looked, it looked a ot more interesting then this piece of ^^&"&^)£&^£&£)&^"&^" I rest my case -_-
Anni @ Sep 19th 2007 11:31PM
Spring 2008? You guys STILL can't release this damn thing in a timely manner?
Well, at least Sony's naming scheme is still as sharp as it ever was. The third Dualshock, you say? Tell me more!
jsn @ Sep 19th 2007 11:32PM
I love how people are excited to line up and give Sony even more money. First the PS3 is a bargain at $600 and should cost more, now they'll give you something that should have been there to begin with for the low cost of $50 each.....FOR MASSIVE DAMAGE....
It's no wonder they felt they could get away with propping up their movie player division by building their console around blu-ray when it didn't need it.
Zaphod Beeblebrox @ Sep 20th 2007 12:25AM
Meanwhile Microsoft can build a game machine that has a defective rate of over 33% and fantards like you will buy it anyway. Heck, you might even buy 2 of them just in case one breaks. And you will buy an soon to be dead HD add-on for almost 2 bills. And you will buy a wifi connection for 1 bill. And you will pay $50 a year for online gaming.
Psaakyrn @ Sep 20th 2007 1:04AM
You know, the PS2 was also said to have a higher than acceptable failure rate, and is still considered the top home console. Maybe realeasing a bugged machine early has it's advantages.
Slaziman @ Sep 20th 2007 9:22AM
If you aren't an idiot, you can get a Wi-Fi dongle for 20$, actually if you aren't an idiot you shouldn't be using Wi-Fi at all unless unavoidable.
Yoshi Likes Boys @ Sep 20th 2007 10:07AM
Okay, so.....
FIRST, Wi-Fi dongles don't work in the 360 unless it's the official MS one. Otherwise, you need a wireless ethernet bridge. Those are different, and more expensive. They also require their own power supply. YAY MORE WIRES.
SECOND, only the official MS wireless adapter allows you to manage the wireless connection through the 360 software. For people with a protected wireless network, this is important, because managing an ethernet bridge in a protected environment is a huge pain.
THIRD, "don't use wifi" is simply retarded.
Zaphod Beeblebrox @ Sep 20th 2007 11:12AM
Good points. Mario likes Yoshi. Yoshi and Mario sittin in a tree...
Yet another "choice" Microsoft gives you, only their officially approved peripherals will work on the 360.
Slaziman @ Sep 20th 2007 12:40PM
A wireless bridge can be had for under 40$
And if running a cable is too hard for you, it's just sad. As for aesthetics, it's very easy to hide a cable.
BTW I heard the old Xbox 1 adapter works D:
Gambit @ Sep 19th 2007 11:32PM
Judging from that top pic, it would seem that the US isn't getting it until spring next year, while Japan gets it November. So, why isn't the US getting it in November? It's a freakin controller. Last I checked, those don't have any kind of region protection.
Ritz @ Sep 19th 2007 11:49PM
These things can't be digitally distributed either. What I mean is that they can't just magically appear in every shop at the drop of a hat. They have to be made (in large quantities) and then shipped. It's not as intensive as other hardware, but the logistics aren't as simple as you might first think.
PS3 rumble should have been here when the system launched. But anyway, Metal Gear Solid 4 will now be complete. It's been so weird to play without vibration.
Gambit @ Sep 19th 2007 11:54PM
I suppose they would have to mass produce these things for awhile, but still. Also, that should make the controllers feel less cheap.
Zaphod Beeblebrox @ Sep 20th 2007 12:28AM
Import 1 from Japan like I will. It's like some of you look for a reason to complain.
Hey look, I found a gold bar. Yeah, but it has a dent in it. wwwwwwwwwwhhhhhhhhhhhhhaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhh.
Go into your bathroom, and get some kleenex for your tears you big babies.
blooh (CDF - Ass Ring) @ Sep 19th 2007 11:34PM
how'd they finally manage to fit rumble and sixaxis in the same size controller? they originally said the 2 couldn't fit together...
fulci zombi @ Sep 19th 2007 11:47PM
they stop bullshitting a little? after that it was likely very easy.
kenster @ Sep 19th 2007 11:37PM
one word..."echochlome"
Joshua @ Sep 19th 2007 11:58PM
Yeah, noticed that.
Also, does anyone know what the first two titles on the list are?
Joshua @ Sep 19th 2007 11:59PM
Figured out the second one is G1 Jockey 4 2007, but what about the first game?
