Super Paper Mario in Europe has game freezing bug

Joystiq reader Steven A. sent us word that Nintendo will soon offer to replace copies of Super Paper Mario in the PAL territories due to a game freezing bug. Steven even made a video of the bug which we've placed after the break. Nintendo states the error is very specific and occurs in Chapter 2-2. If you talk to Mimi a second time without picking up a specific key the game will freeze and you'll have to reset the system. If you've passed Chapter 2-2 without any issue, you're in the clear.
For those wondering why this issue is coming up now, it's because Europe just got Super Paper Mario last week. The game freeze does not damage the console and you can avoid the bug by avoiding the trigger described. Nintendo will soon explain the replacement program on their website.
[Thanks Steven]

I guess this confirms it; no downloadable content, maps, episodic content, patches, demos for Wii. I guess the 512mb internal memory would fill up pretty quick anyways.

Or it's just an easy way to alert customers as to a specific bug they can avoid while creating good will via a game replacement program that will most likely be underused (why deprive yourself of your game for a few days when you could just *not* talk to the NPC twice?)
AstroZombie @ Sep 19th 2007 3:20PM
I don't see why not. I had to download an update before I could play MP:3, why not just release a patch? This is a strange move by Nintendo.
Bloo @ Sep 19th 2007 1:42PM
Lucky for them. Stop playing now and move on! This game ropes you in with a decent first 10 hours and then sneak attacks you with 10 hours of torture mixed in with a few moments of goodness that you're too irritated to enjoy...

Arr...someday I figures I might try finishin' this 'ere game...
Too easy! It was to the point of boredom! Aye, it was easier than a Filipino girl after a bottle o' rum!

Whenever I read a SPM post, the background music from Flipside starts playing over and over in the back of my head.

Found out about this a day after buying it on launch. It happened and I soiled myself thinking it was my Wii. Later figured it was the game. Ran to GAME and got another copy. After some internet reasearch I found out about this. Just don't talk to her and the rest of the game should hopefully be fine. Now on 4-2.

As a PC gamer, I'm used to this kind of crap. Now consoles are connected to the web, you better get used to it too!
Kye (NDF - Earth Ring) @ Sep 19th 2007 2:15PM
What the f***? It's not even a online issue. It's a code error.
Poisoned Al @ Sep 19th 2007 2:48PM
Well done, you have once again proven that anyone with *DF in their name is a fucking moron.
Almack64 (NOF - Ultrazord) @ Sep 19th 2007 3:33PM
Actually Poison Al what are you really talking about. Can you explain your angle because clearly I wasn't the only one to miss where you're coming from.
Oh and thankfully I have an "OF" in my name
Poisoned Al @ Sep 19th 2007 3:47PM
*Sigh* Thanks to the interwebs and hard drives being somewhat standard on a PC, patches can be released. Somewhere the devs have misinterpreted "you can fix the odd issue" as "you can shit out a half finished pile of crap a let the poor bastards who paid for it to act like beta testers."
Before you could patch games, they had to be pretty much solid as they left devs office, because if the game didn't work, you had to recall the bloody thing. Today you get game on shelves YOU CAN'T FUCKING FINISH without a damn patch (pegging that gaming rail crash, Black & White).
All I'm saying is you console gamers where safe before, but now get used to being unpaid beta testers.
matt @ Sep 19th 2007 3:58PM
Al, you say that we should prepare for this because video games are connected to the web. Do you honestly think being connected to the internet had anything to do with a text prompt error? If so, why?
matt @ Sep 19th 2007 4:01PM
Sorry, didn't refresh before I posted that. Nintendo is recalling all the copies, not releasing a patch. The games are not installed onto Wii, nor does the Wii have a hard drive.

Pfft, there have always been buggy console games. This is nothing new.

Europe gets screwed again. :)

First, the glitch with the room with the cannon in Twilight Princess (which a replacement disc was issued).
Second, ??? (hiding his name so noone bitches and moans about TEH SPOILARZ) getting his head stuck in the wall so you can't kill him.
Third, the PAL version of SPM has a game-ending bug (does the NTSC version have it, too? I've yet to get it, sadly).
And I've been having a problem in Animal Crossing: Wild World where if I give my residents a birthday present, the game freezes!
Nintendo's getting lax on their quality assurance... Time to step it up, guys!

Whats a spoiler about saying Omega Ridley?
just the name won't give any hints as to his character or whatnot

When people want to bitch about TEH SPOILARZ, they will about anything.
It was nice knowing you, Mr. KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN. You and your SWAT Cats avatar.
Psaakyrn @ Sep 20th 2007 6:04AM
Thanks for spoiling the game for me. Sigh.
ALH @ Sep 19th 2007 5:17PM
it figures after waiting so long something like thjis would happen. im glad ive been too distracted by my 360 recently to buy it yet
Rob @ Sep 19th 2007 7:09PM
Ah, this may be why I've had to wait a freakin' week for it to be delivered by Virgin. And I was ready to write a strongly worded e-mail to the faceless customer service peeps. Ah well, as long as it gets here soon. Then I'll have to find time to play this AND Halo 3. Ho hum, life is hard.....

Posting in an old blog post. Got SPM on the 17th, my game disc suffers from the glitch.
It strikes me odd that this glitch was somehow missed. Did the testers just follow a game guide to speed up the testing processor or did this one just slip past them? But anyway, NoE has yet to disclose a way of replacing games yet. What's the big hold up? =/
