TGS07: Remote Play functionality expands significantly

At Kaz Hirai's keynote in Tokyo Game Show, the PlayStation Portable's Remote Play feature was demonstrated. Mainichi Demo was on display with "new PSP functionality" that allows you to turn on and off your PlayStation 3 system via Remote Play, something that wasn't possible with previous versions of the feature.
In the future multiple PSP systems will be able to connect as a hub, as seen in this slide. Remote Play is a strong focus for Sony+ gamers will play games, use the PSP as a second screen and more.

Too bad they can't add a feature that gives you enough buttons to plat the game.
Marasai @ Sep 19th 2007 10:12PM
I honestly don't even know why sony is bothering with remote play aside from being able to say they have it. are there any gameplay advantages? Does it change anything?
At most it allows you to play gimped versions of ps3 titles on your psp.
Brandon @ Sep 19th 2007 10:17PM
In actuality, they look just as good visually as if you played them on the ps3 itself. Which is part of the appeal. Not to mention that in a future firmware update being able to turn the PS3 off and on over the internet is a cool feature when you are somewhere wanting to access content.
Marasai @ Sep 19th 2007 10:40PM
Except they lose out on tilt sensing, rumble, an analog stick and 4 buttons.
It's a gimmick feature that no serious gamer is going to actualy use for longer than 10 minutes.
AnimalTaglits @ Sep 19th 2007 10:18PM
I loved how I could play Pokemon Battle Revolution from my DS. This PSP thing sounds like it could be awesome.
BPM (Logic Defense Force) @ Sep 19th 2007 10:20PM
Dear PS3 and PSP,
GCN and GBA called. They want their gimmick back.
BPM (Logic Defense Force) @ Sep 19th 2007 10:21PM
Seriously, though, I think Remote Play is a pretty cool feature. I just hope Kaz isn't saying "HAY GUYS WEER INOBATIVE!!11" (then again, he isn't Krazy Ken).

This whole thing seems confusing to me. 1) Nintendo started this trend with the GBA connectivity to the GameCube, right? Using the portable system as a second scree. People thought Nintendo was foolish then, focusing on that feature rather than online play. I can't imagine how Sony can't be considered foolish now. 2) The ironic thing is that Nintendo is probably the company BEST suited to take advantage of this kind of feature. Like Marasai said, you get gimped versions of PS3 games for the PSP. But for Nintendo, you would get any game you've downloaded for the Virtual Console, right? That would make owning Virtual Console games even more beneficial. Buy Gunstar Heroes on the VC, play on your DS from anywhere. Buy Link to the Past for the VC, play on your DS anywhere. Buy Samurai Shodown II (please please please please) on the VC, play on your DS anywhere. Okay, outside of my SSII aside, most games for the VC are also so small in size that streaming them to the DS would not only be cool but very practical.
duscrom @ Sep 19th 2007 10:37PM
See... there are 2 problems with your argument. 1) Sony is doing Online too.. while not focusing on it to the level Microsoft is, they are STILL doing it better then Nintendo. So.. with Handheld/Console Connectivity AS WELL AS Online.. You see, that's why it's not foolish. It's being added on to what is already useful features.
2nd... well that idea just makes too much sense for Nintendo to pick up on. I mean... It's up there with VC game demos, or DS game demos via WiiConnect24.. and a host of other good and useful things that would work great with Nintendo's current market standing.
BPM (Logic Defense Force) @ Sep 19th 2007 10:35PM
Just for a point of reference:
NES games vary in size from 32KB (or maybe even less...) to 1MB (i.e. Dragon Warrior IV)
Super NES Games vary in size from 256KB (Faceball 2000) to about 5MB (Star Ocean)
Samurai Shodown II (NeoGeo) is 16MB
The DS has 4MB of onboard RAM. Streaming just wouldn't be possible, especially since emulation takes more power than what the original system had (and homebrew Super NES emulators for the DS are still pretty weak; DS just can't handle it).
Ideally, what Nintendo should do is release a "Virtual Console" device for DS. Slot-1 would have the main program, and Slot-2 would contain more RAM to run some of the higher-end games smoother, and possibly storage as well. Using Wi-Fi, you could download your games from your Wii to your DS.
Yeah, that's how they should do it... But I wouldn't hold my breath.
Tom @ Dec 6th 2007 11:31PM
@bpm: Nintendo DS Browser comes with a RAM expansion. If they did it right, they could use the ds browser like they use the wii browser to run wii shop (i think), and you could buy games or login to your account and download ones you've already purchased.

Finally, Sony gets it. The biggest problem consumers have with the $600 PS3 console is that they want to spend another $150 on a gadget that can be used as a remote control.
This should boost those NPD numbers!
marcandrer @ Sep 19th 2007 10:44PM
yeah cause those NPD is what I live for dude.. seriously most ppl here should get a live. I realy dont care about the fact that the mighty 360 sold 40k more then ps3 and that the wii is #1 cause all the mothers buy it for their 4 yrs old. All I want is play the games I like and that those not include Mario Party 8249348, Halo 4 or any other clone fps.
drdre74 @ Sep 19th 2007 10:29PM
its a great idea. I don't like leaving my ps3 on all day. So now I can turn it on from work and start a demo download s when i get home im ready to play.
DBX00 @ Sep 19th 2007 10:31PM
First off, this feature is great if you have a PSP and PS3. If you don't want the feature then you don't have to to use it. The difference between Nintendo and Sony is that with the GBA you didn't have music, movies, and games stored on your host system like the PS3. If I can turn my system on and stream all my content from any location in the world, I don't need to carry movies, music, and games on a storage device. This feature closes the circle between your living room entertainment and portable entertainment (music, movies, games, and possibly DVR functionality).
Zaphod Beeblebrox @ Sep 19th 2007 10:54PM
I was going to say what you have said. Thanks for saving me some pecks at the keyboard.
maverick_saturn_626 @ Sep 19th 2007 10:37PM
Nintendo better suited? Doubt it, while their feature is great and useful and all, Sony has more options with their remote play ability owning a tech business and all, what I found annoying was the inability to connect PSP to PS2 and play on the big screen from the start, now is a little late.
I still don't understand why my PS3 has to be on in order for me to be able to connect. I can't exactly leave it on when I go on hols now can I.
blooh (CDF - Ass Ring) @ Sep 19th 2007 10:48PM
man that all costs a lot of money
Secura @ Sep 19th 2007 10:49PM
Can I do this on my 20gb PS3? If not, I will request a trade-in for a 60gb PS3, free of charge. Not that it'll happen, but I can dream.
maverick_saturn_626 @ Sep 19th 2007 10:49PM
Money is power my dear friend ;)
maverick_saturn_626 @ Sep 19th 2007 10:49PM
Should be able to, I can :)
phattie @ Sep 19th 2007 10:55PM
I want PC based remote plat functionality .. give that to me Sony... and IPTV as well... and more games.
JRM @ Sep 20th 2007 12:19AM
Sadly, none of this Sony news is anything original. Rumble? portable/console connectivity? is this 2007 or 1997?
When it comes to ideas Sony is always one step behind...
Alistair loveless @ Sep 20th 2007 1:12AM
I'm not impressed to say the least.
a little background: I was REALLY excited about the psp when it was first coming out. I waited in line for it. I NEVER waited for a release before. I even bought more than I planned too because I thought it was the coolest thing ever.I saw how much potential it had. I hard about all the features they promised. PSone games. GPS. Cam, online gaming, Using it with your ps3... you get the idea.
And the promises only came true with homebrew. Homebrew is the best thing to happen the the psp.
i have 3 games for my psp and the only one on the horizon I would even spend money on is crisis core.
I play with my psp games MAYBE 5-10% of the time. Otherwise i play genesis or SNES or NES and GBA.
I STILL WANT AN APOLOGY FOR INFECTED AND ASTONISHA STORY! One was a terrible port of an old pieced together rpg from like the 90's and the other was just terrible all around. YOUR BLOOD CAN EXPLODE CRAPPY PIXELATED "ZOMBIES"? Seriously?
Granted, Sony didn't make it.. but this is why nightclubs have bouncers .. keep out the riff raff! Everything about the psp has turned out to be a let down for me other than homebrew. Talkman would have been niche but cool. But not released in the states! Map this is cool but again thats homebrew. I At the very least is be able to watch streams and my ORB CAST on my psp. Location free? wasnt that a failed product originally tied in with the ps1 japan media center the PSX?
SO then i waited and thought, "Hey ya know what, I can still play my ps3 anywhere in the world through my psp, how cool is that? i mean the ps3 cant be THAT expensive when it comes out!"
Then the price. What gets me is sony thought i would spend 600 on a machine that would
a. have no good games
b. cost as much as my first car ( but go nowhere other than my living room.... and can't give rides to fresh outta highscgool jewish chicks trying to piss off theyre conservative parents and hang out with me and purple and black mohawk and subsequently sleep with me in my 87 pontiac grand am, then go to college and marry a lawyer)
c. RIIIIIIIDDDDDGE RAAAAAAAAACER
d. offer mediocre media center functions AT BEST
e. all of the above
fine, I thought. No big Deal.. I'll wait to come down in price and I'll wait for better games. But really I'm done. I like the idea of blue ray I like the idea of the promises... im just done with all hype and NO delivery. remember the EMOTION ENGINE hype and demos? remember the hype? No look at HOME. Sony let this be a lesson to you and your ps3. YOU CAN'T POLISH A TURD!
Sony there is nothing good about who you are or what you do.
duma @ Sep 20th 2007 1:13AM
as soon as you are able to stream live tv to the psp then this will be something worthwhile. otherwise, save the hassles of streaming and just buy a bigger memory stick.
WhatIsThatThing @ Sep 20th 2007 4:55PM
But weren't there only about two or three games that actually took advantage of the thing Sony's ripping off? If Nintendo couldn't sell it, then maybe Sony shouldn't even try. The only game I remember using it for is Zelda: Four Swords Adventure, which was a fun game to play with four people. Can Sony match Zelda at an even BIGGER price?
