It appears former one-term governor of Massachusetts and presidential candidate Mitt Romney is looking to recruit gamers for his campaign. As the ad we captured off of GameTrailers (while reviewing the
Ratchet & Clank videos) clearly shows, Romney has taken out ads to help raise campaign funds on the site. Allow us to
refresh your memory if you don't remember that presidential candidate Romney is "deeply troubled" by the culture our children grow up in today. Using a dirty ocean as a metaphor, Romney says, "I'd like to see us clean up the water in which our kids are swimming. I'd like to keep pornography from coming up on their computers. I'd like to keep drugs off the street. I'd like to see less violence and sex on TV and in video games and in movies. If we get serious about this we can actually do a great deal to clean up the water in which our kids and grandkids are swimming."
It is interesting that this ad pops up on a site that proudly displays clips of those violent video games and has a viewership that likes them too. We have no idea how the advertising process works at GameTrailers, for all we know we could have that ad pop up soon on our own pages, but how times have changed to see political ads on video game sites. We know the
average gamer's age has skewed higher in recent years, we just don't know if it's necessarily skewed to helping Mitt Romney become President of the United States. Oh, and before the conservatives get all uppity, yes we will laugh when we see
Hillary Clinton ads as well -- although she has
tried to change in the last year.

I was on GT like all day... didint see it once. Shows how observant i am.
Sean @ Sep 20th 2007 5:57PM
What kind of name is Mitt for a person anyways?
Mr Khan @ Sep 20th 2007 6:18PM
His full name is "Willard Mitt Romney"
Mitt is an odd choice for a monicker, "Willard" could be shortened to "Will" which certainly sounds a lot more normal
Sean @ Sep 20th 2007 6:22PM
From now on I shall call him Mittens.
Jeff @ Sep 20th 2007 5:57PM
Unless his slogan is "Finish the fight", I don't see much that ad can do.
Phillip @ Sep 20th 2007 6:08PM
Very nice. :)

Cyxodus @ Sep 20th 2007 6:02PM
I'm a conservative and I don't like to hear ANY politician talking about censoring video games. Especially someone from my own party.
Vegnagun...Remarks like that is what fuels politicians who want to censor video games.
Vegnagun @ Sep 20th 2007 6:08PM
Yes Cyxodus, I was serious about that last comment. While I'm at it I might as well go on a GTA fueled killing spree, hell I'll incorporate some BioShock for kicks and I'll see where it goes.
Phillip @ Sep 20th 2007 6:10PM
So you're fine with censoring drugs off the street?
Vegnagun @ Sep 20th 2007 6:11PM
Yeah and why haven't we started a crusade on porn yet? It should be easy to get it to stop from showing on kids screen, they should have to type in their birthday! A perfectly devised plan!
Cyxodus @ Sep 20th 2007 6:53PM
Yes, I know that but it was a comment that was out of place and childish and didn't deserve to be here. I don't like to hear anyone say that someone should be killed simply because you may disagree with their political views. Don't be a politist.
Vegnagun @ Sep 20th 2007 6:57PM
No it doesn't seem like you do know. It seems like you completely misinterpreted a joke. Believe it or not, I could care less if this guy got elected and cracked down on children buying more violent video games. Maybe if he did, people would talk less about it because something would actually be happening.
theGravel @ Sep 20th 2007 6:10PM
Mitt Romney?
Real men vote Mike Gravel
AstroZombie @ Sep 20th 2007 6:51PM
You, sir, get a [+].
1up_clock @ Sep 20th 2007 6:18PM
Hmm... This intrigues me, but, like with all politicians, more details are required before I'll even consider voting for him.
What is he going to do to protect the children? What is the extent of this protection? How will these things be explained to give a better understanding for parents and the like? How will it affect older gamers and the games designed for them? Would the industry as a whole have to conform to a set of guidelines? Would games have the same treatment as other forms of media in terms of what is considered acceptable?
Just because a politician brings up video games doesn't you should make him public enemy number one. For all we know, he may actually do something good for the industry.
waves @ Sep 20th 2007 6:20PM
He should have put the ad up on GameVideos.com. Their defective site never works, thus protecting me from violent video game imagery.
Jeremiah Wood @ Sep 20th 2007 6:28PM
Me? I plan to vote for Duncan Hunter. By the way, talking about killing anybody you don't agree with politically is both insanely immature and wrong. I don't agree with the democrats, but I would never think or talk about killing one. The immaturity of some of the people on here astounds me... Assuming that "Vegangun" is older than 10, anyway.
Vegnagun @ Sep 20th 2007 6:50PM
Immature? Wanna fight about it?
AstroZombie @ Sep 20th 2007 7:03PM

EN @ Sep 20th 2007 6:39PM
So what is the point of this article? That if we're gamers, we should be in favor of the current amount of violence and porn in the world or at least want more? If so, that's pathetic and it's no wonder anyone over the age of 25 or who's a parent won't listen to "gamers" if that's the "gamer" position.
There's nothing wrong with wanting less porn and violence being part of socially acceptable society. I don't hear any talk of bans in Romney's statements, just a pretty reasonable position. Take a breath and cool down. Gamers ought to be glad that a presidential candidate thought to post an ad there. It means you matter.
faceless coward @ Sep 20th 2007 6:44PM
You don't matter. Your vote matters. Once they have that, your wishes become irrelevant until the next election rolls around.
faceless coward @ Sep 20th 2007 6:45PM
Also, I somewhat agree with you on that last point. The problem is that when a politician starts talking about "cleaning the water," they usually mean in the form of legislation, and I think our Constitutional rights have suffered enough over the past eight years. But we shouldn't assume that's what he meant without giving him a chance to clarify.
Vegnagun @ Sep 20th 2007 6:54PM
I don't know if I'd go as far as to say he thinks gamers matter, but I will say that if voted in he may have a positive effect and at least if people thought he was cracking down a little on violence it wouldn't be brought up so much. However, politicians rarely keep their promises after they sit down in a big government-funded comfy chair.
Synner @ Sep 20th 2007 7:45PM
@ faceless coward,
don't think our constitutional rights didn't suffer even more in the 8 years previous.

Mitt is KERRY 2.0, flip flopping, north eastern, odd talking man that looks presidential, and can't win the general election why in the world is he wasting money on game trailers makes no sense to me. Someone like Obama or Edwards would be better served doing ads in this type of website
Captain Obvious @ Sep 20th 2007 8:06PM
Um, you need to get one of those maps that we Americans are lucky to have. Since when is Utah "north eastern"?
jmf @ Sep 20th 2007 10:25PM
Romney does have homes in Massachusetts and New Hampshire as well as Utah. He was also the Governor of Massachusetts for 4 years where he was more liberal than conservative, socially.
Guybrush Threepwood @ Sep 20th 2007 7:48PM
I'd be 100% fine with Mike Gravel or Ron Paul. I like Ron Paul more though.
I'd seriously consider leaving the country if Hillary or Giuliani (especially Giuliani) or a couple others get elected, though.
Vegnagun @ Sep 20th 2007 7:55PM
Hilary Clinton; slightly more subtle than Hitler
samfish (MSDF- Nurse Outfit!) @ Sep 21st 2007 1:38AM
Guiliani freakin' scares me. The guy is seriously 10 kinds of crazy.
I swear, the guy's bloodlust is so thick, he could give Hitler pause.
AstroZombie @ Sep 21st 2007 12:05PM
Guiliani is the scum of the earth. I'd vote Hilary over that bastard, but only as a lesser of two evils.
Typical Rudy speech:

and jfk saved half a dozen lives in ww2 after his boat crashed. he hurt his back and wrote a book (very good fyi) while he was a senator
Sidescroller @ Sep 20th 2007 9:40PM
Uh... Mitt Romney was born in Michigan, and has been the governor of Massachusetts for the last several years. He does own a home in Utah, but that's not where he's from, or where he currently lives. I'd say that qualifies him as being northeastern. I really hope you only thought he lived in Utah because of his association with the Olympics, not because of another possible poor assumption.
jimy @ Sep 20th 2007 9:49PM

The guy is a nutbag like the rest of them. Yay lets preemptively nuke Iran. Lets double the size of Gitmo! Yay! Everyones idea of "foreign policy" has to do with weapons, death, and submission.
Ron Paul is the only sane Republican running this time.
The Dems are going to clean house unless the Republicans get ditch their fanatical base, and lose the tough man attitude. We're sick of it.
blooh (CDF - Ass Ring) @ Sep 20th 2007 11:18PM

ehh, screw the repubs, if obama/edwards is the dem ticket i'll vote for em in a heartbeat
