TGS07: Final Fantasy XIII trailer impressions

Earlier trailers highlighted Lightning, but the trailer at TGS showed off a number of new characters, environments and creatures. A gunman that seems to have specific mastery over water shoots a crystal, creating a massive water summon. Paths of ice form in the sky, as he rides along on a motorcycle. Certainly, a spectacle to behold. Then a massive African-inspired scene provides a stark contrast to the futuristic environments we've seen of the game so far. Fantastic Mammoth-like beasts walk across a river in a scene that could've been ripped out of a Afrika gone slightly astray. Debuting in this new trailer was a brand new female character that stands, staring at a frozen planet orbiting in the sky. The trailer ends with a proud proclamation "PS3 Only," to silence any doubters.
Once again, we were stunned by the visuals of the trailer, which went beyond the quality of most Hollywood productions. The new dry landscape showcased provides reassurance that the game will not remain stagnant in its visual look. However, in spite of the incredible excitement generated by the trailer, we were surprised that a different game in the Square Enix theater stole the show.

"...we were surprised that a different game in the Square Enix theater stole the show."
What game?
Shagittarius @ Sep 20th 2007 11:33AM
Laundry Mama for the Wii.
Night Elve @ Sep 20th 2007 11:58AM
Right on Shaggi!

According to finalfantasy-xiii.net's report from a few days ago:
"The Final Fantasy VII remake came up in discussion again and Famitsu was told releasing a remake is a question of timing with all of the staff currently involved in the Fabula Nova Crystallis compilation. Imaizumi also added that a new title would be announced at TGS which Playstation 3 owners should be excited about. There hasn't been any hints as to what the game might be but if it involves all of these developers it could be another Final Fantasy XIII title."
RDX @ Sep 20th 2007 11:28AM
This better leak or get released soon. The lack of info is brutal. And I agree with Fernando Rocker- what's with the cock tease at the end?
blooh (CDF - Ass Ring) @ Sep 20th 2007 11:32AM
too bad it's ps3 only, guess i won't be playing it
Fernando Rocker (NDF - Water Ring) @ Sep 20th 2007 11:33AM
I guess that only like 87 persons will play this game =(
OnimushaSoki @ Sep 20th 2007 11:54AM
woo... Looks like I'm among "the lucky 87". :p
Night Elve @ Sep 20th 2007 11:59AM
Lord of the Trolls: The Return of the Troll (Aka Fernando)
Zaphod Beeblebrox @ Sep 20th 2007 12:03PM
Fernando, the only ring you deserve is a Troll Ring. Really, I would rather listen to George "Dubya" Bush explain to me in detail what sovereignty means and which one of the Internets is best.
Then, I would stand next to him and wave at Stevie Wonder, look through closed binoculars backwards, and try to open a prop door.
Start making your trolling funny or I will send the Migra after you.
Fernando Rocker (NDF - Water Ring) @ Sep 20th 2007 12:12PM
Whatever you say Godisamyth
MariosInferno @ Sep 20th 2007 12:41PM
Coming soon to an Xbox360 near you. Bank on it...
samfish (MSDF- Nurse Outfit!) @ Sep 20th 2007 11:33AM
I hope the mystery game is Super Mario RPG 2.
Shut up. Let me dream.
Fernando Rocker (NDF - Water Ring) @ Sep 20th 2007 11:35AM
Super Mario RPG 2? Wow, that will be really, and I mean REALLY good.
Crono (NDF - Fire Ring) @ Sep 20th 2007 11:55AM
We already had that, only they called it "Paper Mario" for N64.
neutral @ Sep 20th 2007 12:07PM
I like Mario RPG better than Paper, it has that 'SNES' atmosphere somehow.. Maybe just me.
gamernewz.net @ Sep 20th 2007 12:47PM
Now I'd buy a PS3 for that!
Jerk Face @ Sep 20th 2007 1:19PM
I loved Mario RPG but the Paper Mario series has more than sufficed over the years. All three were pretty excellent if you ask me.
Not that I'd complain, mind you. Mario RPG rules my ass hole.
I said it.
AlanS17 @ Sep 20th 2007 11:33AM
If I has to guess which game stole the show, I'd go with Last Remnant. It's going to be cross-platform so it's a game that a lot of people can get behind.
Plus it's an all-new IP from a company that takes a lot of flack for milking series such Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest.
I personally want to learn more about it. Bring on the trailers!!
Fernando Rocker (NDF - Water Ring) @ Sep 20th 2007 11:36AM
Or maybe The Crystal Bearers...
Agathos @ Sep 20th 2007 11:36AM
Square-Enix game: this is referring to the PS3 exclusive final FF7 spin-off title.
(I presume)
Josurr @ Sep 20th 2007 11:38AM
Or maybe, just maybe, a FF VII remake using the PS3 graphics...
As samfish said "Shut up. Let me dream."
Evan @ Sep 20th 2007 12:17PM
My guess would be Dissidia for the PSP, not a PS3 game.
neutral @ Sep 20th 2007 11:37AM
Chrono Trigger remake for DS!
uhh... anyone?
NaeemTHM @ Sep 20th 2007 12:37PM
HELL YA.
Though enough with the freakin remakes. Lets get some sequel action!!
Jouten @ Sep 20th 2007 1:33PM
For PSP too. I think it would actually be better on the PSP in this case for RPG's.
Make no mistake, I own both DS and PSP, but if it is going to be an RPG that doesn't use touch or the microphone, then PSP would be best, for the screen size and all.
However, it would be cool if they made two versions of Chrono Trigger, both that would take advantage of each systems strengths/features.
Thanks.
Vic @ Sep 20th 2007 11:41AM
The Bouncer 2
Fernando Rocker (NDF - Water Ring) @ Sep 20th 2007 11:43AM
The Bouncer was my first PS2 title... it sucks.
OnimushaSoki @ Sep 20th 2007 12:06PM
LoL A sequel to THE BOUNCER? XD At that rate, they might as well make ERGHEIZ 2.

Jon @ Sep 20th 2007 11:43AM
What game? Dragon Quest IX? Last Remnant? VII remake?
HB96st @ Sep 20th 2007 11:43AM
Ea Sports should only play on the 360 the way square/enix back the PS3.. The Japanese refuses to let the 360 (A USA console) win. If I had EA's control, I would Pull all further developments of EaSports away from the PS3. That would doom them in America.
Seraphim @ Sep 20th 2007 11:47AM
EA is naturally a multiplatform company. Sqeenix is not. Your comment is hereby made redundant.
Crono (NDF - Fire Ring) @ Sep 20th 2007 11:59AM
WTHell are you talking about? They're both 3rd party companies. The only reason FF games don't get ported all over the place is because SE chooses not to (oh wait, forgot about all those handheld versions.)
EASports is contractually obligated to release their sports titles on every viable platform available. Thats why there is Madden 08 for everything under the sun. Thats just the way licensed franchises (like NFL) go.
OnimushaSoki @ Sep 20th 2007 12:03PM
EA's not that damn stupid. Hell, if the Dreamcast had sold better, I'd have to wonder if 2KSports would've snagged NFL licensing over them... and all because they didn't want to support SEGA.
The only company thus far that I can say closely got the idea of selling cross-platform right was NAMCO, with SOUL CALIBUR II; and even that was a half-ass attempt... You want to play as Link? Better have a GCN(or Wii, nowadays) and the GCN version. Spawn? Xbox or X360(I'm fairly certain it got added to the backward compatibility list). Heihachi? WTF... why bother? Go play SOUL CALIBUR III or TEKKEN5(or even TEKKEN:DR, if you have a PS3).
JodyAnthony (VGDF) @ Sep 20th 2007 11:44AM
I didnt like final fantasy x, x-2, 11, or 12, but i'll be damned if im not excited for this one.
ff13 + star ocean 4 = ps3 purchase
Seraphim @ Sep 20th 2007 11:45AM
VII remake = Instant PS3 buy.
fyreblazer @ Sep 20th 2007 12:52PM
I agree
StrangeBum @ Sep 20th 2007 11:47AM
Square Enix, oh how many dreams of gamers you hold in you tainted palms.
FF VII Remake
Super Mario RPG Sequel
Chrono Trigger Remake (I would also like a more direct sequel than Chrono Cross was)
Please, just give us something that we actually want.
Cellien @ Sep 20th 2007 11:51AM
Yay, more cut-scenes....
JKPierce @ Sep 20th 2007 12:01PM
Not enough 'splosions. Damn right.
Let's rip on our AK's an' kill us someone. And in the sequel, we can dual-wield them. It's innovation!
Cellien @ Sep 20th 2007 1:46PM
@JK: Ya cause we all know WATCHING a cut-scene is innovative. Another one for "interactive movie" for, what some people call, the "WatchStation 3".
JKPierce @ Sep 20th 2007 3:28PM
In what manner do you read a book to get its story? I mean, good god, three million people bought Final Fantasy XII in the first month; it's obviously an acceptable form of storytelling.
Cellien @ Sep 20th 2007 4:23PM
You're the one that went on the rant about innovation bud. :)
James @ Sep 20th 2007 11:52AM
The game is probably Dragon Quest IX. They're in Japan, that's stuff's like crack to them.
TotoDestroy @ Sep 20th 2007 11:57AM
It has to be Kingdom Hearts..........
OnimushaSoki @ Sep 20th 2007 11:57AM
SMRPG2? ...If that were true, it would be the first Wii game I pre-order.
/word
citan666 @ Sep 20th 2007 11:58AM
I don't think it is anything like Dragon Quest IX or Last Remnant. They are already confirmed. They would have to have some bad ass trailers to steal a FF XIII showing.
Crono (NDF - Fire Ring) @ Sep 20th 2007 12:01PM
I agree. Joystiqs wording makes it seem like its something they can't talk about (yet). Makes me think its a new title all together.
C'mon, stiq! Don't be such a tease. Do you want another Robert Summa incident on your hands.
I predict 900 posts.
gerg @ Sep 20th 2007 12:01PM
seriously, say what game it is. F5 isgetting a workout right now. ff vii remake please god make my year.
Zaphod Beeblebrox @ Sep 20th 2007 12:06PM
